The book is divided into four parts: 'The Lifestyle Matters programme and the principles behind it'; 'How to implement the programme - including who can benefit from it, how long it should last and the resources required'; 'Delivering the programme - looking at session structure, selecting a session and keeping a record of group and individual sessions'; and, 'The Lifestyle Matters manual - each section containing a combination of group sessions, individual sessions and visits or outings'. Inspired by research by Florence Clark and her colleagues at the University of Southern California, this Lifestyle Matters programme has been developed through consultation with older people at every stage, making it a welcome and invaluable resource. As one member of a group exclaimed, 'You didn't give me a new lease of life, you gave me back my life!'. "Lifestyle Matters" is now referred to in the NICE guidelines (2009) where it is identified as the intervention of choice for therapists and professionals responding to the guidance by this professional body.

About the Author
Claire Craig is a senior lecturer and researcher in occupational therapy at Sheffield Hallam University. She is particularly interested in working with older people and has written a number of publications focusing on the arts and dementia care. Gail Mountain is an occupational therapist as a well as a lead researcher in allied health and rehabilitation. Prior to embarking on a research career, she spent over ten years as a practitioner and manager in a variety of health settings.

A TALENT FROM EASTERN EUROPE!

Gennadiy Koufay is a relative newcomer to the realm of pin-up/erotic art but in a short time the native of the Ukraine has quickly established himself as one of the best in the filed. SQP presents the first collection of work from this talented artist who came to New York in 1995. Looking at Koufay's work it's obvious that he's influenced or at least studied the pin-up art of the 1940's. Like those great masters, Koufay focuses the entire attention of his painting on his subjects, leaving the backgrounds completely open.

Some of the subjects of this collection include blonde bombshells Pam Anderson and Victoria Silverstedt as well as the legendary Bettie Page. Anderson takes the spotlight in a painting simply titled, "Pamela" as she models on a bed in a white teddy. Pam also appears on the back cover in a piece called "Apple", as a topless Pam is wrapped up in the American Flag, eating an apple as the ultimate female temptress.

Bettie Page is the subject of a number of pieces in the book. My favorite has her dressed in a lavender Playboy bunny outfit. The Gorgeous Silverstedt also is the subject of several of Koufay's paintings. "Village Girl" shows off her ample assets while she is wearing lace panties and a cowboy hat. Another dazzling piece has Silverstedt posing in a revealing blue sun dress, holding a daisy. Note the brilliant blue eyes!

A classic 1940's style pinup gets a two page, centerfold type spread as an alluring nude woman lies on her stomach with her backside arched in the air. A piece called Pinup #44 is yet another of Koufay's takes on classic pin-up art with an alluring red head dressed in sheer black nylons and lace bra.

What strikes you about Koufay's art is that he really "gets" the look of classic pinup art while still adding his own seductive style to each piece. I look forward to seeing more from him in the future. The book is 48 pages featuring both black & white and full color art.

In Strangers in Zion: Fundamentalists in the South, 1900-1950 William R. Glass tells the story of the growth of Protestant fundamentalism in the American South and the subsequent conflicts between different branches of the movement. Glass argues that despite the generally conservative character of Southern society and religion, fundamentalists during 1900-1950 had difficulty making a home for themselves in the South, although they did gain a foothold through building a network of conferences, churches, and schools. These institutions, though, provoked the first sustained reaction by other Southern denominations against the fundamentalist presence in their midst. In these same years, a theologically liberal faction of the fundamentalist movement began to take a prominent role in influencing policy and ascended to leadership positions of educational institutions and mainstream Southern denominations. The result was the introduction of fundamentalist controversy among Southern Protestants. These battles, particularly those among Southern Baptists and Southern Presbyterians, fostered the establishment of ongoing factions determined to resist and reverse the penetration of liberal theologies in their churches. In this way, Glass points to the origins of the current crisis among Baptists in the South as being much earlier than anyone else has suggested.

About the Author
William R. Glass is the Publisher for World Languages at McGraw-Hill Higher Education. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Spanish Applied Linguistics with a concentration in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). He was previously Assistant Professor of Spanish at The Pennsylvania State University where he was also Director of the Language Program in Spanish. Book of wisdom.....

THE SWEET BREATHING OF PLANTS should be required reading for high school and early college classes covering the natural world. I'm a big fan of essays, books, etc. written by naturalists, and SBP is one of the best collections of essays I've come across. The editors, Linda Hogan and Brenda Peterson have included the works of leading scientists such as Rachel Carson and Jane Goodall, but they've gone beyond the tried and true and compiled a collection of essays by many other scientists, naturalists, veternarians, and very wise women including Susan Orlean who recently produced THE ORCHID THEIF.
The golden rule of nature seems to be cooperation, not competion. SCIENCE magazine once published an article entitled "Nature Red in Tooth and Claw" and while a good deal of consumption takes place in the natural world, symbiosis is far more important. Nature is bigger than the "survival of the fittest." Many plants and animals have symbiotic relationships. I think my favorite example is the dandelion which pulls calcium to the surface which allows other plants to thrive. In the plant world, having a dandelion for a neighbor can be a good thing good.
Native Americans in the Amazon riverine forests have not lost touch with nature. They understand that partially submerged trees feed the fish, and that they must build their gardens in the forest and away from the river banks which are exposed in the dry season. Contrast this attitude with that of the inhabitants of the Sierra who are felling trees in old growth forests as fast as they can. The regrowth is never the same. As one writer who used to work for the U.S. Forest service explains, the name of the game is to replace the living forest with a single tree. Monoculture seems to be more economically sound.
But is it economically sound to destroy the environment including the old growth forests? A growing body of evidence suggests this is not the case and much of it is contained in this book. A good deal of money (if that is all that matters) can be made from keeping the forests entact. Medicinal plants yet to be discovered live in the forest. Recreation including sight-seeing, fishing, and other "noninvasive" outdoor sports are an important source of income.
One of my favorite essays was written by Donna Kelleher, a veternarian who practices holistic medicine. In her essay entitled, "Living Medicine for Animals" Kelleher writes of her experiences with animals, including Chirpy, a pet bird who suffered from a claw infection of Staphylococcus bacteria. Kelleher treated Chirpy with a mixture she concocted consisting of Calendula and other herbs after conventional forms of treatment failed to help Chirpy. The little bird was healed and lived two more years untile he died of old age.
This book of essays should not be overlooked. If you think you've read it all you probably haven't. Although much of the information in this book can be found elsewhere (most of the authors have written extensively on their topics), this is a nice anthology of essays and a good place to start discovering all the natural world.

The Sweet Breathing of Plants...

... is a collection of essays about nature written by women. I found it quite amazing. There's a mix of poems, essays, stories, and an overall sharing of how these women, and women of the past relate to plants, and the natural world in general. i found the most moving essay to be the one by Paula Gunn Allen. She discusses how we are all part of the Earth's initiation process, from a young lady to a wise women. It helps put into perspective some of the percieved degradation to the environment. How can a human, which is part of the earth, and nature, do something that is unnatural? It is impossible! Linda Shepherd's "My Life with Weed" was great. Mary Crow Dog's "peyote" gives a history of native american's spiritual practices with peyote, which was also entertaining. Trish Maharam's "Plantswomen' and Laura Foreman's "for the maples" were also great, to name a few.

Sweet it is...

I'm not sure I can find the words to describe my serious delight about this book, but I'll do my best. If I could have created the perfect book in my mind before I read this, I couldn't have imagined this book up - but it's what I would have wished for had I known I could. ... that doesn't sound clear...

I've never considered myself a feminist, but this book helped expose the part of me that was deeply bonded to the community of what it means to be a woman. I didn't think about gardening before i read this book and it enticed me to GROW things. It's poetic, it's true personal stories (which are always my fav), it's about EARTH (which is always amazing), and it feels like a community. And it's educational.

It is indeed sweet, in all matters of the word.

Excellent Uncomplicated Home Receipes

This cookbook is made all the more interesting by the fact that you can actually stay at the authors' Bed and Breakfast Inn and get a good sampling of the results of their receipes. The "Inn on the Cove" is located in the suburbs of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The cookbook contains about 250 receipes. It includes: "Bountiful Beginnings"- Breakfasts, (just what you would expect from a B&B); "From the Kitchen Stove"- breads, pickles, and condiments; "Teasers& Tempters"- appetizers, soups, and salads; "Main Dishes from Land and Sea"; "The Great Outdoors"- receipes for the barbecue; "Celebrating the Harvest"- vegetable side dishes; "Sweet Finale"- cakes, cookies, and deserts. The receipes are straight forward and practical. Ingredients are readily available, except maybe for dulce, the main ingredient for "Dulce Soup". This is a seaweed found in the New Brunswick area and very popular for some local dishes. (I think you have to grow up with it or acquire a special taste for it.) Other than that ingredients can be found relatively easy. Neither of the authors have had professional cooking training, but have both grown up with a love for cooking and entertaining guests. So their receipes are not only practical, but tried and true. Unlike some cookbooks originating outside of the United States, the ingredients are given in both metric and the U.S. system of lbs, ounces, tbsp, cups, etc.
A local cooking show is video taped at the authors' Inn for broadcast on the Fundy Cable network. Many of the receipes found in the book have been demostrated on this show.

Delicious, easy to prepare comfort food.

We picked up this cookbook when we vacationed in Nova Scotia in August of 2001. Although it is written by the innkeepers of the Inn on the Cove in Saint John's, the food contained in the cookbook is very similar to the food we found and ate in Nova Scotia. We enjoyed this cuisine very much. Especially anything having to do with seafood.
This book did not just sit on the shelf after I returned home. I have made and enjoyed the following recipes: Pumpkin Bread-delicious and moist, Clam Chowder--very good and easy to prepare, Versatile Spaghetti Sauce--the addition of paprika made it one of my husband's favorites, Maritime Meatloaf--very good, Chicken Pot Pie--excellent, I altered it a bit because my son does not like mushrooms.
I've read all through the cookbook and plan on trying many more recipes. I have to say, I have NOT had any bad luck with any of the recipes I have tried yet!

In 1859, a thirteen-year-old-girl began a diary, detailing the emotions and events of everyday life. Daily life in her small hometown of Cleveland, Tennessee was not destined to remain quiet and routine, however. When the Civil War began, the diary entries provide a firsthand account of the sorrows inflicted when the Civil War tore families apart in the border South. Myra, a staunch Confederate, gave a vivid account of the war, how it divided her community and left misery in its wake. Her diary became a bosom friend to whom she could confide her pain and grief. While she never knew the historical importance of her diary, her descendants did, and preserved this precious legacy.

Like the famous diary of Anne Frank, Myra Inman's diary begins with ordinary events and proceeds to tell the story of a child's view of the horrors of war. This book offers a unique perspective on the Civil War--that of a child in the borderlands, where families were torn apart by differing loyalties.

C.W. Diary: narrow focus: domestic concerns and local people, events in Cleveland, Tennessee

The focus of this book is very narrow. It is the diary of Myra Inman, who lived in Cleveland, Tennessee, during the Civil War. Another reviewer pointed out that Miss Inman writes about sewing and such things. That is true--she is more interested in sewing tucks in her chemise than she is in skirmishes. She doesn't even specify which units were involved in local actions. It would be nice if she went into detail about such things. However, for anyone whose Civil War project is specifically about Cleveland, Tennessee or any of the surrounding towns, it is pretty useful. Union troops were stationed in Cleveland, Tennessee in the Spring of 1864. She mentions some Union soldiers (usually just by rank and surname) who come to her boarding house. A typical statement would be "Lt. Simmons dined with Aunt Elizabeth." (p.245, Feb. 4, 1864); not much to it. She mentions some events--actions that happen in Cleveland and Charleston, Tennessee, Dalton, Georgia, and other places. They're just bare mentions, but are useful for cross-matching dates with other sources, such as O.R.

In addition, the letters also cover the King family's company, the Roswell Manufacturing Company, which manufactured cloth for the Confederacy; the death of friends and a brother in the war; the refugee experience of those fleeing Northern advances on Atlanta; accounts of the Union forces occupation of Roswell, including the opening of Roswell King's buiral vault, a secret Bessie kept from her husband's relatives; and details of Jessie, the trusted family slave, who followed King to Virginia and escorted his wife and youngest son throughout the war.

About the Author
Richard Upsher Smith, Jr. is a professor of Classics at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He holds a BA in Ancient History and Biblical Studies, a MDiv from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD in Classics from Dalhouise University. Smith served in the Anglican ministry for 20 years. He has published in the fields of Classics, Medieval Studies, and on the Reformation. Smith teaches Greek, Latin, and in the Great Books (Honors) Program.

An excellent companion to Wheelock!

Following the format the "Sententiae" of Wheelock's "Latin", Smith has produced a worthy companion to the essentially Classical Latin material taught in Wheelock. Coordinated to correspond chapter by chapter to the grammar (and vocabulary) of Wheelock, the student is exposed to the thoughts of Christian writers and Sacred Scripture. This text is just one more reason to set Wheelock's "Latin" as the gold standard to college Latin, and even for high school. The ancillary materials are abundant and varied.

This is a wonderful resource for the student who is interested in later Latin. The sentences are fun to read, increase slowly in difficulty, and the fact that it is correlated chapter-by-chapter with Wheelock is really nice! I can't recommend it highly enough.

This text goes well with Wheelock, allowing the serious student to get additional practice and a feel of "newer" Latin. The sentences reinforce the basics of the Ciceronian style promulgated in Wheelock while allowing the student to expand into the realm of post-classical Latin. No, purists, it is not a knock on Wheelock's methodology or Dr. LaFleur's updates to the text since there is only so much room an introductory text can take up.
