The year is 1928. Forty-four Octobers have come and gone since Elfego Baca earned top ranking as a gunfighter. Few now remember that on a fall day in 1884, in the village of Frisco, New Mexico, Baca ducked some 4,000 bullets fired by eighty cowboys aiming to kill him. Fewer still recall that the reason for the shoot-out was Baca's obsession with rescuing Mexican settlers from abuse by Texans in days before 'civil rights' became a catch phrase. The reputation of the Hero-now turned-lawman-lawyer-politician is sorely in need of repair, for despite his boasts of possessing one of the best law practices in the state, things have not gone well for Baca. Elfego has been declared a bankrupt; he's been humiliated by an untidy divorce; and neither political party in the state seems to want to run him as a candidate for much of anything. So, what's a man of action to do?

What Elfego does is to make a pre-emptive strike to repair that tattered reputation. He finds a biographer to tell his story just like he wants it told, including his meetings with Billy the Kid and the opera star, Mary Garden. He finally settles on Kyle Samuel Crichton, but only after William A. Keleher, the respected journalist-lawyer, has said, 'No.' Keleher introduces Baca to Crichton, who has few writing credentials though he would later author popular books and a successful Broadway play. Crichton has escaped from the smoke stacks and slag heaps of the Pennsylvania mining country to the pure air of Albuquerque, not to repair the reputation of those like Elfego who have fallen from grace, but to repair his own health. While Elfego is as short as Napoleon, Crichton is taller than Gary Cooper. While Elfego is rotund, Crichton is thin and muscular. While Elfego is bold, Crichton is cautious. But Crichton, who later wrote a biography of the Metropolitan Opera star Risë Stevens (Subway to the Met), brings a wild sense of humor that was to be reflected in all his books. And, while Baca is long on yarns that boost his heroism, Crichton insists on balance. The narrative of the book the pair produced remains open to question: How much of it is fact, how much is flights of fancy? Whichever it is, it's a whale of a story about a life lived to a fullness rarely experienced.

She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, USA, and has worked in Calcutta with Mother Theresa's order, the Missionaries of Charity. Her previous volumes are Selected Spiritual Writings of Anne Dutton, Volume I: Letters (2003), Volume II: Discourses, Poetry, and Hymns (2004), and Volume III: Autobiography. She is interested in women's history, contemporary theology, and spirituality.

Taylor teaches history at the Florida Institute of Technology and at Indian River Community College. He holds the Ph.D. in 19th Century U.S. history from the Florida State University.

Great letters but lackluster editing

The letters included in this collection are noteworthy for their content and relative completeness. Rarely does one get to read both sides of a Civil War correspondance. Usually letters from home were lost or destroyed during troop movements and only the soldier's letters remain. Grant Taylor, however, managed to hold on to many of his wife's letters and the perspective this gives on the dynamics between husband and wife is fascinating. Anyone who doubts the impact of homefront hardships on the frontline soldier need only follow Grant Taylor's growing frustration as he slips from uneasy acceptance of his military service in 1862 to depressed introspection and resignation toward his own death in 1865.
Editorially, this book suffers from a military slant that avoids discussing the very things that make these letter important: the soldier's concern for family and home and the impact that concern had on his mental and emotional condition. Footnoting is haphazard at best and wavers between military history and endlessly repetitive genealogy. I can appreciate the work that went into identifying each person mentioned either by given or nicknames, but by page 30 we are already familiar with who the cousins and brothers are and don't need to be reminded.
Read the book for its appeal as a primary source but skip the notes.

Two views of the Civil War told personally

This book is a collection of 160 letters between soldier-husband and homefront-wife from 1862-1865. The remarkable quality about this collection is the interaction between Grant relating his military experiences and Malinda keeping him informed about their children, the farm, and friends and relatives in their community. Very readable book!

Many hard hours have been put into this book. First the letters had to be transcribed from a handwriting to a typed print. You feel everything from this aspect...especially when you know lineage. The reader appreciates the finest detail. A movie could come from these letters so easily...this was the time!

In my opinion, it should be in every interior designer's library! The interiors pictured are varied in their themes and beautifully composed. These are not cutsey, overdone rooms. This book is chock full of wonderful photos of absolutely gorgeous rooms located in England (mostly), France, Majorca, St.Lucia, and Greece. Graceful, nonpretentious elegance at its finest! If you love aged patinas, threadbare Oriental rugs, mellowed heirloom antiques, vintage linens, and a dash of eclecticism, this is THE book for you!

An excellent book from one of the legends of early karate in America. Bill Wallace was known for his fantastic kicks.

Anyone who has been involved in karate and the martial arts since the early 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s remembers the pioneers in the American martial arts scene. One of these is Bill “Superfoot” Wallace. He along with Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Rorian Gracie and numerous others paved the way for those practicing today. I recently purchased this 190 page soft cover (Dynamic Stretching and Kicking by Bill “ Superfoot” Wallace) book. Even though it was published in 1982 the vast majority of information is timeless and still valid today.

The large formatted volume is organized into two parts. Part one covers anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of flexibility. Other topics include major muscle groups, benefits of flexibility, how to stretch, warm up exercises, upper body exercises, lower body exercises, balance exercises and footwork exercises. The second part focuses on Bill Wallace’s unique style of kicking, combinations, using hand techniques to set up kicks, distancing, single kicks, defensive kicks, and jamming.

This very informative and interesting book is for anyone who wants to improve their flexibility and kicking skills. I personally think this book is a classic by one of the most talented karate and kickboxing pioneers in the early years of American Karate. The black and white photographs are clear and easy to follow; however, to get the most out of this text one should combine it with actual hands on instruction by a karate instructor.

I was impressed with this work. The stretching details of Grandmaster Wallace's routine is well explained with why and how you should do certain stretches. The written portion on his kicking method is very well done and the pictures are great, highlighting correct and incorrect ways. It highlighted things I hadn't picked up from attending Bill's seminars or his instructional video series from Panther Productions. Highly recommend for any fan of his or student of karate and kickboxing.

This is a good book on flexibility

This is a good book on flexibility. I have since purchased a copy of one of his video series. As one could expect, there is a lot more detail and explanation of the techniques and muscle relaxation in the videos than the book written sometime ago. My recommendation, go for the video.

The year is 1864, and Chief Black Kettle's band of Cheyenne are asked to move closer to Ft. Lyon on Big Sandy Creek in Colorado Territory. Chief Black Kettle decides to remain peaceful with the whites instead of fighting since he realizes how outnumbered his people are and because the Tsistsistas (Cheyenne) are starving. By being a peaceful tribe, Chief Black Kettle erroneously thinks he is now under the protection of the U. S. Army since he was given an American Flag and some peace medals. Since the Tsistsistas are a warrior society, the Chief's decision is very unpopular with his people, and the Dog Soldier Society vows to keep on fighting the whites for as long as it takes.

This fantastically real historical fiction novel by author Nancy Oswald is told through the eyes of thirteen-year-old mute Hides Inside. All he wants to do is become a warrior and hunt and fight in battles. He is unhappy with Black Kettle's decision to remain peaceful - when will he get the chance to prove himself as a young man by counting coups on his enemies in battle if they remain peaceful? His brother, Standing Tall, knows of Hides Inside's feelings, but he is internally battling the hard decision of remaining peaceful and siding with his chief or going against his own tribe with the Dog Soldiers and continue the fighting. He continues training Hides Inside to become a future warrior since that is the way of their people.

Hides Inside gets into battles with his own tribal members, young boys like himself that want to prove themselves as young warriors but aren't of the right age or skill set yet. They taunt Hides Inside constantly about his lack of speech, so Hides Inside is always angry and wants to fight with them. Standing Tall keeps him focused on continuing his warrior studies and that to be a true warrior, he cannot fight his own people. Ever.

The reader then sees the scene of the horrendous Sand Creek Massacre through Hides-Inside's eyes and those of his friends as it unfolds. Author Nancy Oswald does a terrific job to make the reader feel as if they, too, are engaged in this battle for life and survival. This is one of the most shameful massacres in American history against our Native American population - war on mostly women, children, and old people, who could not flee from the powerful cannons and rifle fire of Col. Chivington's "Bloodless Third" and the First Colorado Calvary.

The survivors, including Chief Black Kettle, Hides Inside, and his elder brother, Standing Tall, stagger across the frozen plains to the camp of the Dog Soldiers. It is time for Hides Inside, now called Wolf Howls Loudly since he is again able to speak, to decide if he will walk the path of peace with his older brother Standing Tall and Chief Black Kettle, or if he will join his friend Two Crows and the Dog Soldiers and continue the fight against the whites.

This is a MUST READ for your older child if you want them to know the truth of the way it was with America's shameful treatment of its Native American population during the Indian War days, and to have them have a good insight into the ways of the Tsistsistas, the Cheyenne people. I give this book a high five for the author's sensitive treatment and deep respect of the Cheyenne side of things, and for her realistic portrayal of the Sand Creek Massacre. I cried as I read it - Nancy's word images were so strong, I felt out of breath as I ran with Hides Inside and his friends after watching their loved ones slaughtered before their young eyes. This is one of those books that is bound to be a classic on the Sand Creek Massacre. Although fictional, Ms. Oswald stuck to the historical facts to bring about this remarkable book. I couldn't put it down - it was riveting.

A boy's fight to belong

Hides Inside is a thirteen-year-old Cheyenne boy who cannot speak and must sign all communications with others. He is teased and tormented by the other boys and longs to prove himself a warrior and a hunter equal to the big brother of the family who took him in when his parents were killed by the Pawnee. Nothing seems to work out for him and although he tries to be worthy, in the eyes of others, he feels he is a constant failure. On his first hunt, he kills a buffalo calf, but another boy removes Hides Insides' lance and inserts his own arrows. His lack of voice often makes it hard to explain his side of the story and so he must accept this as another failure in the eyes of the people.
This story leads the reader up to the Sand Creek Massacre when soldiers come without warning, ignoring the white flag raised to show the Indians' willingness to cooperate peacefully. The irony of it is that Black Kettle had moved his people there to be closer to the Fort and so more assured, they thought, of the soldier's protection. An interesting, factual story for the young reader, Hard Face Moon is a lesson in cultural differences that often creates such tragedies. Eunice Boeve, author of The Summer of the Crow

Hard Face Moon: Interweaving of Story and History

Middle grade readers will love Nancy Oswald's new book, Hard Face Moon, and teachers and librarians will be thrilled to have a work of historical fiction that ties in so well with the curriculum. Published by Filter Press, a Colorado publisher of southwest history, biography, and historical fiction, Hard Face Moon deserves a wide audience.

The book focuses on events leading up to the horrific Sand Creek Massacre. The reader watches the action unfold through the eyes of Hides Inside, a mute Cheyenne boy. More than anything, Hides Inside wants to be a proud Cheyenne warrior like Standing Tall, his brother. But Standing Tall, older, wiser, and more experienced, believes the Cheyenne should try to make peace with the white men and is beginning to put aside the ways of a warrior.

Oswald depicts the many attempts at negotiation that occurred prior to the massacre, making the outcome even more heart wrenching. Hides Inside is not so sure he believes in peacemaking. He doesn't trust the white men, and besides, he wants his chance to raid, fight, and count coup. Young readers will identify with his desire to be treated as a grown-up.

Nancy Oswald's style is perfectly suited to this story. Her spare prose seems to meld with Cheyenne ways and culture, most of all with the heart and mind of Hides Inside. Hard Face Moon is rich with imagery, perfectly portraying the way Hides Inside experiences the world. Picture this: "We leave the valley between the two ridges and climb onto the flat. Now it is easy to see everyone stretched out in a long line like colored beads on an invisible rope." Hear and feel this: "Wind presses against my cheeks, chanting a wild earth song as my pony's hooves drum the ground." Beautiful language that puts the reader right there.

The end captures the true horror of the massacre, and we feel the overwhelming sadness and pain of Hides Inside and his people as they suffer the full extent of their betrayal by white soldiers. Reading Hard Face Moon is a far more meaningful way for students to learn about what happened that awful day at Big Sandy Creek than reading from a textbook could ever be.
