Making bread the pioneer way To make bread, the pioneers mixed flour, milk, fat, sugar, salt, and yeast together in a bowl to form dough. The dough was kneaded, or punched and rolled, on a table. After the dough was kneaded, it was covered and placed in a warm area to rise, or puff up. It was then kneaded again and divided into loaves for baking. The bread was baked in a well-heated oven. The pioneers used a long handled board, called a peel to place the dough into a hot oven.

Still others interpret Douglass as having moved outside the circle of theism to Enlightenment humanism. There is also an unsettled debate about the cause of Douglass s theological shift. One view attributes Douglass s shift to a psychological factor of rejection by White Churchmen over his support for radical policies such as abolitionism. Another perspective attributes Douglass s shift to Enlightenment principles of natural law and rationality. Davis utilizes selected categories from liberation theology to provide a more accurate exegesis of Douglass's study to encourage a new angle of interpretation of Douglass s philosophical and theological evolution.

Reginald F. Davis was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Shelby State Community College in Memphis (A.S.), Incarnate Word College in San Antonio(B.A.), Colgate Rochester Divinity School (M.Div.), and Florida State University (Ph.D.). He has been an adjunct professor at Florida A&M University and Barry University in Tallahassee. He has been a frequent radio guest and lecturer at colleges and churches across the nation. He served as dean of students at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

Powerful thinking

Liberation theology is one of the major theological schools of the twentieth century. However, such theological developments do not occur in a vacuum, and if such theological developments are true to the gospel from which they spring, one will be able to look back into the past and see evidence of such thinking and acting among people of the past. Such is the case with Reginald Davis' treatment of the figure Frederick Douglass, a powerful embodiment of much of what came to be part of liberation theology in century after his death.

As Davis states in the preface, 'We label Douglass a liberation thinker not because he constructed a systemic theology, but because in his speeches, writings and actions he hit upon parallel patterns of thought of liberation theology. Moreover, Douglass lived his theology. His life was a prime example of what the oppressed can do to gain and secure freedom.' Douglass rose from slavery and obscurity to being both hailed and hated as a constant agitator for freedom. His agitation, however, was no simple act of civil disobedience, nor was it a violent fight against what was admittedly a violent form of oppression. Rather, his was a carefully considered and philosophically (and theologically) sound programme of argument and action in crying out for emancipation.

Douglass drew much of his inspiration from the spirit of the American Revolution. The principles of the Declaration of Independence and the overall spirit of the Constitution called for a society in which all were free and equal under the law, yet in practice there were varying levels of oppression (Douglass did not neglect the fact that women were also not treated as equal), the worst of which was slavery.

Douglass began thinking theologically from an early age, when he could not reconcile the idea of a just God in command of all things with the idea that some classes of people were predestined by God to be in subordinate and slave roles. Douglass also learned early that education and freedom were related (because of the disapproval of his master Thomas Auld at Douglass' growing literacy), and determined to gain this education on his own. Falling upon hard times with a cruel master, Douglass began to formulate the idea that his liberation could not be left to chance or miracle, but rather, it was something that he, as an oppressed person, must take for himself. This would be a very significant insight, for it is part of this insight that forms the foundation of liberation theology; Davis quotes Paulo Freire to this point as well.

When Douglass escaped to the North, it was not smooth sailing from there. Douglass encountered racism in the North, even among abolitionists, who decried the institution of slavery but still discounted equality of all human beings. This would form another element of Douglass' thinking that is parallel to the ideas of liberation theology - the recognition of the intrinsic worth of all human beings. In this setting, Douglass also learned the very human limitations of the institutional church, as often caught up in a preservation of the status quo as it is in proclaiming the gospel - like many liberation theologians and other prophetic voices, he found working within the framework of the institutional church problematic.

Douglass had criticism for the mainline denominations of the time, who seemed to have their institutional needs wrapped up in the preservation of the system, as well as criticism for those free-church and evangelical types who proclaimed a more eschatological brand of freedom, one that comes in heaven or the millennium or some such teaching. 'Douglass asserted that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not a postponement of justice and the release of the captives for an eschatological salvation. The gospel of Jesus Christ speaks of salvation in terms of a present reality.' This again links to liberation theology, that sees liberation and justice in this world as a necessary task, not one to be ignored in favour of a more 'spiritual' or theoretical goal.

Davis devotes a chapter each to 'Douglass and the Making of Liberation Theology', as well as 'Interpretation of Douglass as a Liberation Thinker.' Davis draws in a number of the major theological developments from the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century in looking at different ways in which theology has grown, with a particular emphasis on the varying strands of liberation theology and the kinds of interpretative paradigms they have instituted. This is a somewhat controversial stand, given that some theologians distrust using the term 'theology' to Douglass - his criticism and mistrust of Christianity has sometimes been interpreted as being anti-theological or anti-religious in total. Davis argues that there is a more subtle issue at work - given the experience that Douglass had at the hands of those who either espoused or justified their actions in the name of religion (and Christianity in particular), it is no surprise the Douglass would come to mistrust the situation.

There are elements of Douglass' life that I would have liked to have seen expanded upon, but every history is necessarily selective, and David has done a good job at sticking close to his original thesis while providing a reasonably full account of the context and life of Douglass himself, and the theological situation after Douglass that led into liberation theology.

This is a good work on a powerful figure.

Exciting new look at Douglass

Reginald Davis' new book offers an exciting new look at Frederick Douglass, reviving the spirit of this liberation thinker, whose thought appears more relevant now than ever.

Davis offers convincing evidence that Douglass should be viewed as a precursor to liberation theology. Furthermore, Davis explicates, through his use of Douglass' life and thought, the process whereby oppression is sustained, as the oppressed take on the ideas of the oppressor, particularly in the area of religion. Liberation must begin with the oppressed liberating their own minds from the ideas of their rulers. In Douglass' case, this entailed a decision to reject the prevailing interpretation of Christianity of his time and reinterpret theology based on a foundational committment to the liberation of the oppressed. Like a true liberation theologian, Douglass rejects any interpretation of faith--declares his willingness to reject even the Bible if necessary--that justifies oppression. Douglass also stirred the masses into action by rejecting a "pie in the sky" or "let go and let God" mentality; people must struggle for liberation and not wait for God to solve their problems for them. Nevertheless, Douglass maintained a deep faith in Christianity and the Christian call to "set the captives free."

A few quick notes:

--I like the nice use of Paulo Freire made by Davis.

--The theology shows a real depth of analysis.

--Davis does a good job of showing how Douglass' thought remains relevant. (Often portrayed in the history textbooks as a bland free-slave abolitionist statesman, Douglass was a revolutionary, concerned not only about slavery but classism, racism, and sexism, who urged the youth of his day to "Agitate! Agitate! Agitate!")

A fun read...an important read...deep enough for theologians and philosophers to enjoy...non-technical enough for the layman to enjoy too.

I expected more out of this book than I got. Many of the stories appeared to be short stories written by new college students. Just not that well done. You could tell the writers were not all that good yet.

Celan's poetry reflects the emotional and spiritual scars he suffered at the Nazis' hands. After both his parents were murdered in concentration camps, he spent World War II in a forced labor camp; he died a suicide in Paris in 1970. Taken from his last three verse collections published in Germany, Last Poems contains short, fragmentary, free-verse explorations of a semiabstract universe in which a shattered soul confronts sounds, violent motions, stones, empty space. "In the gap of the calendar/ the newborn/ Nothing/ rocks him, rocks him." Memories of his Holocaust experiences are embedded like bullets in stained glass. Even when Celan does not deal directly with the Nazi years, the pressure of the past weighs heavily; he warns a crocus, "You need every blade." The translators' use of a plethora of compound words (pre-flood, hatchet-swarms) to cope with Celan's German coinages is understandable but not always effective. A critical apparatus would have been helpful. Most of the poems in this bilingual edition have never before been translated into English.

This volume contains over 100 poems, most previously untranslated, from Celan's last three collections: Lichtzwang (1970), Schneepart (1971), and Zeitgehoft (1976). Celan's verse derives from and reflects his experiences as a Jew in Europe during World War II and, afterwards, as a Jew writing in German. His poems express a private symbology; though their individual power is unmistakable, their meaning is elusive: "Gone into the night, complicit,/ a star-/ porous leaf/ instead of a mouth:/ something remains/ for wild wasting,/ treeward." Almost all of the poems here are spare, hard-edged nuggets or fragments of feeling: "Cut the prayer-hand/ from/ the air/ with the eye-/ shears,/ lop its fingers off/ with your kiss . . . ." If you love Who -- then get this book

This is my favorite non-fiction Doctor Who book of all time. The book is loaded with some never before seen footage and insightful data. The layout is wonderful and captures the decade that brought us Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. My favorite chapter of the book features merchandise from the 70's -- so far the only Who book that addresses this aspect of the show.

A delightful review of the world of Doctor Who as it stood in the 1970's. It includes many rare pictures from the series as well as publicity shots and behind-the-scenes photos. From Adams, Douglas to Zygons (Terror of), this is a wonderfully produced Master-piece! A truly great book for all Doctor Who fans!

Perfect Vacation Planner

On 5 trips to 4 of the islands, I've consistently found that this guidebook steers me in the right direction, and leads me to some out of the way places. The listing of B&B's & condos is extensive, if you are more interested in hotels, the Fromers guides have better listings. This book provides directions to some sights you would almost definitely miss otherwise. For example, on the drive to Hana there is a lovely swimming hole (with waterfall) about 30 meters from the road but with no signs leading to it. I would never have found this, and it was a higlight of the drive. Numerous other examples (this is one of the few books with details about Molokai), but the bottom line is that while most of the guidebooks list identical sights, this one goes into much more detail. If you are looking to lose the crowds and find some quiet places on your own, you need this book.

Fine general guide

Lonely Planet is best for long trips because the reading and anecdotes are interested. For short trips when you are not sure what you want to see, it gives a fine general overview and good suggestions for restaurants. I felt that I saw everything I wanted to see and then some. The guidebook merely supplemented my trip just to make sure I caught the interesting points---which is exactly what a guidebook is for.

Many good guidebooks out there...this isn't one of them

Before investing in the LP Hawaii guidebooks, you should be aware that the authors do not live in Hawaii, nor are they the experts they claim to be. Unfortunately, their lack of local knowledge is readily apparent in this series from an otherwise high-quality publisher of travel reference books.
As a travel writer and Hawaii resident, I was dismayed to find an overabundance of inaccuracy in the Lonely Planet Hawaii guidebook. While it is realistic to expect some things to change between updates (prices, phone numbers), many things do not, such as driving directions and addresses. But aside from being poorly edited, I found even more troubling the authors' propensity for substituting ill-formed editorial opinion for knowledge of fact.
That all being said, the book might still be interesting if the authors' writing style demonstrated even a modicum of life. Instead, the tone is pedantic, more reminiscent of a community college lecture (or even an essay on what the authors' did during their summer vacation) than a definitive guidbook on traveling in Hawaii. I was left with the impression that the authors hadn't actually been to the islands, but that their research consisted of spending a night at the local library with a couple of reference books.
And what's with the amateur photography by author Ned Friary? The poorly composed, low resolution images seem well suited for a neighbor's vacation slide show, but not what you'd expect from a benchmark travel reference.
My recommendation? Save your money and buy a couple of cocktails on the flight over instead.

Among them are the Loyalist Encampment and Cemetery in Fredericton, Saint John's Fort Howe, and the MacDonald Farm Provincial Historic Park in Northumberland County. Hope Restored is the second book in the New Brunswick Military Heritage Series published by Goose Lane Editions in collaboration with the New Brunswick Military Heritage Project. Written by historians and military personnel, the books in this series will explore subjects ranging from New Brunswick's pivotal role in the American Revolution to one veteran's account of caring for World War I cavalry horses. In April 1775, the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired. They reverberated in what later became New Brunswick, when recent immigrants from New England rose in rebellion. The British moved quickly to crush these rebels, and after the war they made the new frontier with the United States secure by settling Loyalist regiments throughout the area. The result of this wave of British American settlers was the establishment of New Brunswick as a separate colony in 1784. The motto of the Loyalists, Spem reduxit — Latin for "hope restored" — became the motto of the province they founded.

Hope Restored tells the story of the Loyalist regiments that settled New Brunswick, describing their Revolutionary War exploits, the colourful and influential people who came with them to New Brunswick, and the part of their legacy that can be seen today. Hope Restored is the second volume in the New Brunswick Military Heritage Series.

About the Author
Born in Montreal in 1935, Robert Leonard Dallison attended both the Royal Roads Military College and the Royal Military College of Canada and, following graduation in 1958, was commissioned into the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He received a BA (History) from R.M.C. and a BA (History and International Studies) from the University of British Columbia. He served for thirty-five years with the Canadian Army, obtaining the rank of lieutenant-colonel, and ending his career as Chief of Staff of the Combat Arms School at CFB Gagetown. After retiring, he maintained his life-long interest in history and heritage, including serving as the President of Fredericton Heritage Trust and as the New Brunswick representative on the Board of Governors for Heritage Canada. From 1992 to 2002, he was Director of Kings Landing Historical Settlement. Retired again, he is currently living with his wife Sharon in Fredericton.

Very interesting perspective.

I enjoyed this book very much. I found it easy to read and educational. As an american, the only history I knew was about our side of the Revolutionary War. I enjoyed reading the story of the Revolution from the British point of view. I especially liked learning about the Founding of New Brunswick, the land where my Father's family settled. It was refreshing to get a new perspective on such an important time in our history.

The Art of Jon Hul

I personally loved this book. This was a very impressing array of pin-up art . being an artist of the same and similiar genres I can appreciate this book as it gives me ideas of techniques and what sort of models to continue to use. All in all I give this book a high reccomendation giving its great use of color and shading. being a fan of b & w I was impressed by the pencil art and the realistic look of the subjects. I really enjoy owning this book.

I've know Jon Hul for several years, and I have been awe-inspired by his work ever since. Jon's talent and artist vision stands head and shoulders above the rest, and I'm so glad that his art has been compiled in such a beautiful volume. Although nothing beats viewing his artwork in person, this book presents a wonderful overview of Jon's incredible talent and skill, and should be considered a "must-have" by anyone who appreciates artistic virtuosity.

The Amazing Joh Hull

Joh ia a man who was destined to become an artist, and thankfully he is an expert at the genre of pin-ups.

This first collection of his art work leaves me stunned as I turn the pages and see the detail he captures inmost of the pieces, whether the are color or b/w.

I love this collection as his technique with the female form has been honed to perfection, and has been compiled beautifully.

There is a biography, and in the back a step by step on creating a pencil portrait. Also a section on each of the pieces, and Joh talks about his life.

It is an amazing book and one I would recommend you add to your own collection.
