About the Author
Joshua M. Smith grew up in the United States on Cape Cod and coastal Maine. He now teaches at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where is he also director of the American Merchant Marine Museum. He is the author of Borderland Smuggling: Patriots, Loyalists, and Illicit Trade in the Northeast, 1783-1820.

Not much about the battle

There is hardly a debate that is more controversial than the African discourse on feminism. Anti-feminist positions are widespread in Africa. On the one hand, there are those who reject feminist ideas fundamentally. Most of their arguments do injustice to the heterogeneity of feminism and do not really threaten the existence of feminism in Africa. On the other hand, there are the critical positions of those who sympathize with feminist ideas, but do not feel at home with Western feminism. Their central reproach is that feminism does not see beyond Western societies, and hence ignores or marginalizes the specific problems of African women. Some radical and Marxist feminists are an exception to the rule. They, however, thus the reproach, go to the opposite extreme by presuming to be able to speak in the name of all women, without, however, having really informed themselves about the situation and the problems of women in other parts of the world. As a consequence, they base their assessment of the situation and the emancipatory ideas of African women and women’s movements on their own views and experiences.

In her book, Susan Arndt enters this important debate by attempting to discuss and define the nature of African feminism and African-feminist literatures. Taking into account African-feminist literatures’ heterogeneity as well, she uses a classification model to discuss and group it. Arndt distinguishes three main currents of feminism: reformist, transformative and radical African-feminist literatures. The workability of this classification model is put to the test, illustrated, and exemplified with interpretations of selected African-feminist prose texts by African women writers of different regional, religious and generational backgrounds: Grace Ogot, Ifeoma Okoye, Flora Nwapa, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Mariama Bâ, Buchi Emecheta, Bessie Head, Pat Ngurukie, Nawal El Saadawi and Calixthe Beyala.

Susan Arndt studied German and English languages and literatures at Humboldt University, Berlin, and African Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, UK. She did her Ph.D. on Nigerian women writers' rewriting of orature. She currently teaches at the Department of African Studies at Humboldt University. The Great Cheikh Anta Diop identified the roots of African culture from which one can trace the branches. No African researcher since, however, has provided a comprehensive analysis connecting the ancient Nile Valley civilizations with the African universe. From the pyramids of Egypt to the great walls of Zimbabwe, Western scholars have attributed the achievements of these prodigious indigenous African civilizations to people culturally and geographically alien to Africa. However, in the case of the ancient Nubian Empire of Kush, which occupied the southern part of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and all of present-day Sudan, one expects reasonable scholars to attribute this African culture to an African people. The present much-needed work traces Diop's great "African cultural commonalities" of matriarchy, totemism, divine kinship, and cosmology to the very core of Kushite culture. This book is on the cutting edge of a new generation of Afrocentric scholarship whose mandate it is to provide a clearer picture of Africa's true nature, it s genius and its genuine contribution to World Civilizations.

About the Author
Miriam Ma'at-Ka-Re Monges is currently an assistant professor of Sociology/social work at California State University, Chico Campus. Not terribly helpful

I wish that this book did what it said - reconnected the root system of African civilization. This book is in the same vein as Cheik Anta Diop's African Origins of Civilization, but unfortunately she seems more interested in rehashing the same arguments and counters from the 1960s and '70s than she is in writing a concise, African-centered history of Kush and Nubia. I guess I'll have to keep looking...

Objective Afrocentricity vs Biased Eurocentricity!

Any objecive, unbiased and well argued book on African civilizations or history deserves a 5 star for me: the reason being simple, there are not many of such books in the world! Ms Monges has presented both sides of the argument (an art of arguing) and has logically and objectively rejoindered some of the eurocentric views and arguments very well. I have read 3 other books on Africa and Kemet (Egypt) and all share to a great extent the same well argued, objective and afrocentric view as potrayed by Ms Monges. I have always asked myself what do european anthropologists or so-called egyptologists mean by: 'negroid', but not 'negro'; to rephrase, black but not black enough? Indeed I have found several of the their arguments very irrational, absurd and illogical. Indeed Ms Monges does well to deal with most of the misconceptions surrounding Kemet, Kush and Africa. She seeks partly to adduce evidence for the Blackness of Egypt by comparing it to other cultural practices in modern Africa. Something which she does very well! Jesus said: there is nothing that is hidden that will not be revealed. Thank You Ms Monges for you objective Afrocentricity!

Rather Difficult for 6th Grader But an Accessible Discussion for High School and Up

This book was assigned to my advanced-reading 6th grader to use for an ELA project (the idea was to take a nonfiction book with text, and create a picture book based on it). Apparently, my son had been complaining that the other assignments were too easy (heh, hope this was a lesson learned in that regard).

Although the vocabulary and somewhat dry and academic style of this book presented some obstacles for him (for comparison, he has read The Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451, and Cat's Cradle with no problem), he ultimately enjoyed reading it and especially liked digging through the bibliography for more information. This makes me extremely happy, especially since the subject matter is both afro-centric and female-centric. It frustrates me no end that in 2013 liberal arts education is still so focused on white, western males. Nothing wrong with them, just, the world is a rich and varied place, with more historical context than we know. It is a beautiful thing to learn. And this book presents what, for many students (and life-learners), will be new information and a new point of view, in a very accessible form.

Poetic Craft with Attitude

The sparkling freshness of the poems in _Certifiable_ belies the seasoned career of Pamela Mordecai, author of several poetry collections, plays, cultural histories, and essays. This recent volume, like those which preceded it, prove that this crafty wordsmith refuses to settle for variations of the same theme or a proven formula. Rather, she approaches her art with the same spunkiness and flair evinced by many of the female personae in the poems: one female speaker, after enumerating the many qualities that recommend her as "well fixed / for all love's traffic" patly challenges, "So tell me, brother, / What have you to give?" A poet well known in Caribbean circles, she is unjustly overlooked by most of the critical audience in the Caribbean, the U.S., and Canada where she has lived for several years. West Indian and Canadian, her work straddles the two worlds with aplomb. While a poem like "Jus a Likl Lovin" addresses the hardships facing adolescent convent girls in Jamaica, "Blessed Assurance" portrays an old subway evangelist determined to help "one prodigal / find him way back to him Pa" in spite of the pain she experiences in daily negotiating Toronto subways. Mordecai will appeal to both connoisseurs of poetic form and fans of performance, vernacular poetry. She combines the same grace with form and voice reflected in poets like Elizabeth Bishop, Michael Ondaatje, and Lorna Goodison. While her imagery can be startlingly precise, it never feels contrived or manipulated: an abandoned pregnant young woman is "aglow with a rain / of black hair that just / stirs in the burp / of the subway's hot air." The vernacular flow of those lines are equalled or surpassed by the infectious rhythms of lines like these: a creole boy child on Shakespeare's _Tempest_ isle "him tongue twining with curses / Muttering glossalalic nonsenses / him find him can decline him pain in verses, start spirits with words...." As well, a wry humour sharpens the ironic edge of several poems: to the radiologist's caveat that breast exams be paid in cash for "too much handwritten money is funny these days," she quips, "Well, it's nice that my doc / has his procedures straight." If you buy only one guide, this is it!

I purchased the Lonely Planet Guide, the Knopf Guide to the Holy Land, and the Insight Guide for Israel. All are excellent resources, and really seem to serve different needs.
The Lonely Planet Guide is way ahead in providing helpful info about the day-to-day details of your trip. It has more restaurant and hotel listings and tells you about the feel of the place. It provides suggested iteneraries, which I find especially nice. Finally, it gives details on getting from place to place, which can really help reduce vacation stress.
The Knopf Guide to the Holy Land is a truly beautiful volume which manages to capture the people and history like nothing else. It has fold-out views of the Via Dolorosa and its coverage of all the sites is amazingly detailed and really prepares you to get the most out of your visit.
The Insight Guide's color pictures are nice and I like their presentation of the history, but the Knopf Guide really excells in this, so I find myself using the Insight Guide just as another opinion on which sights to see.
We'll be carrying the LPG to get places, but the Knopf Guide will be our reference once we arrive.
All in all, the Lonely Planet Guide is the must-buy book in this category. Buy the Knopf Guide second.

If only they spent more time on research...

...and less on campaigning, it could have been an excellent guide. Alas, alas. It would be unreasonable to expect neutrality and even-handed approach from Lonely Planet (although they almost manage it sometimes; the best I've seen was Canary Islands, by the way). Israel guidebook is one example where they feel their political opinion is so valuable that it has to be offered on almost every page.
I am no Middle East expert and I do not know who is right and who is wrong in the conflict - but in any event, I do not want my guidebook to preach to me. I buy guidebooks for travel, accommodation, eating and sightseeing information - and this part is only so-so. The guide has some helpful info (for example, about passport stamps and about beating the bureaucratic system - or at least minimizing its impact). The book has not been researched sufficiently and choices of hotels, for example, often feel they have been picked at random.
There is one thing you realize after reading about a dozen Lonely Planet guides: a very large part of the book is actually cut and pasted from one book to another. When you are paying for a Lonely Planet guide, you are paying for much less particular destination information than you imagine: there are pages and pages of generalities of no practical relevance. Why insult intelligence of a reader with gems such as "pack as little as possible but take everything you need"? I can think of no other reason but to artificially increase the volume of the book so it seems a better value for money.
As usual, information about "Getting there" is very, very poor. Same tired "advice" about buying tickets from discount travel agents (and you thought about buying them from your dry-cleaners, didn't you?), same behind-the-times feeling when it comes to internet (although now there is a reluctantly compiled list of travel sites, which conveniently excludes some of the biggest and the most helpful on-line travel agents, to which the authors are presumably opposed on ideological grounds).
Where sightseeing is concerned, the guide lack focus, descriptions are uninspired and don't feel particularly tempting.
There are many other guides to Israel, take your pick - but Lonely Planet is best left on the shelf, unless of course you want to have a full collection.

Lonely Planet Guide for Israel is biased

There are so many guides to Israel.

This is one you can do without.

The author Matt Rees blames Israel for Arab terror without describing Arab hatred of Jews and Israel. He equates Israel with Arab terrorists like Hamas and Islamic Jihad, fails to mention Jews murdered in Arab Riots of '29 and '36. He denies the holiness of the Temple Mount to Jews and only mentions the mosque built on top of it to co-op Jewish culture. I could go on with other examples but they are rife and there is not enough space to write about all his partisan opinions. His editorializing is apparent throughout the book and gets tiring. Israel is a very exciting place that is at the core of Jewish life. Rees' arabist opinions have no place in a guide book.

Don't waste your money on this book. The loneliness in the title is for the absence of truth in this guide.
