Like the individuals that make up the State, the State is not only a force of good, but also of evil.Second, King's theological understanding of the State remained relatively constant in most of its fundamental elements but developed in substantive content and expression throughout his life. With this argument, Long counters King scholarship that posits a radical transformation between the first decade and the last three years of King's ministry.Third, King's understanding of the state has its roots in the African-American tradition he experienced through his family and his Morehouse professors -- many of whom were Black Baptist preachers as well as in European-American religious and republican traditions. Identifying King's thought as that of a bricoleur -- a moralist who uses moral languages for his own use -- Long warns against a tendency to dismiss the interconnections between the African-American and European-American dimensions of King's education. King was a black bricoleur. Finally, the root of King's understanding of the State is not incivic republicanism, theological liberalism, Marxism, Niebuhrian realism, or in any other such school, but in the religious tradition he experienced at home and at college.

I have serious problems with this one.

Speaking as a scuba diver with over 40 years experience, I well remember the first time I ever saw a shark underwater (Fiji 1979) - and can feel the excitement as though it were only yesterday. I had no desire to harm that creature then and have no such desire now. Instead I look to works such as this to further enhance my understanding of the creature.

On the one hand, this is a very good book with much information for the reader. On the other, it is as though the book has been hijacked by Ron and Valerie Taylor just to further publicise their existence. I am aware that many divers really dislike their gung-ho, macho style of attacking the shark head-on for reasons of personal publicity, but let me make two points; Firstly, the book is billed as having an “Introduction by Ron & Valerie Taylor.” Surely that means “they” didn't actually write it. At the beginning, there is a list of 8 contributors in addition to the Taylors and a photograph of all but one of these ‘nine.’ Of course, the Taylors’ just “had” to pose looking through the jaws of a Great White Shark in order to extract maximum personal effect. But what message are they trying to convey?

Elsewhere we find photographs of Valerie Taylor wearing a chainmail suit covered in raw fish trying to get a Shark to bite her arm - I always thought it a great pity she didn’t try that stunt using a helmet - but I digress!!! And again, just what is that supposed to mean? Is she really trying to teach the uninitiated that sharks eat raw fish?

All of which begs the question; Is this a serious book or what? Judging by the qualifications of the ‘serious’ contributors (some of which are very impressive - and none of which are held by the Taylors’!), I think it is. It would, however, have been much better with just the input from those other 8 (qualified!) people. Why? Because they are experts a person can take seriously. Put another way, with all reference to the Taylors' removed, this would easily have been a 5 Star publication.

Today, all species of Shark are becoming increasingly endangered - some critically so. I wonder how much Ron and Valerie Taylor have contributed to the overall decline of this creature in general and the Great White in particular. Perhaps they haven't - but their antics suggest otherwise and many people believe them to have done far more harm than good. If so, that is not something for which they can be proud - with or without that wretched chainmail suit and their penchant for posing through the jaws of a Great White…

Thankfully, the days of huge safaris to shoot wildlife in Africa and the Tiger in Bengal are long-gone. How long do we have to wait until the antics of those who persecute great creatures from the deep also come to an end?

A must have for any shark enthusiasts

This is a fantastic book, and is surely a must-have for any shark enthusiasts, beginnners and experts alike. The bright graphics illuminate the book from cover to cover, with some awesome pictures of sharks from around the world. The comprehensive species index at the back not only helps the reader find their way around any technical jargon, but serves as a wonderful reference point. This book is packed full of detailed biological information, as well as fascinating stories to enthrall and amuse, contributed to by some of the World's leading shark experts.

A welcome replacement

My students love this book, but their love had utterly destroyed my old copy! Glad to be able to replace it. The book arrived quickly and in excellent condition. (There are a few graphic photos of shark-related injuries in the book. I wouldn't recommend it for very young kids. My students are in 5th grade - - and use this book with the understanding that they are not to run around showing the gorier pictures to their classmates, who might be more sensitive.)

Another important assumption is that Baptists have influenced each other through literary and scholarly dependencies, mentoring, academic affiliations, and informally through associations. Unfortunately, Baptists have made scant the use of "footnotes" until last century, and this has complicated the theological detective's task.

Tremendous Work

Dr. Brackney has produced another tremendous work on Baptist history. I have used this resource as a valuable tool in teaching a new members class at my church. The section on Baptist Hymnody is wonderful, I use it to help build an appreciation for some of the great hymns which has led to a greater acceptance of hymns.

Scholarly, but accessible to a variety of audiences, this book is a welcome addition to the few other historical treatments of Baptist theology. Brackney rightly understands that Baptists have typically sung and preached their theology instead of publishing it in official Confessions of Faith. He thus not only examines the Confessions, but also the hymnody and writings of Baptist pastors and teachers. The strength of the book lies in the inclusion of African American and Canadian Baptists. I don't believe there is any other book that comes close to the scope of this book. Brackney provides a comprehensive overview of the development of Baptist thought. For that reason, I believe this will be a seminal work in the field of Baptist studies.

The Royal Road served as a lifeline for the colonial system from its founding in 1598 until the last days of Spanish rule in the 1810s. Throughout the Mexican and American Territorial periods, the Camino Real expanded, becoming part of a larger continental and international transportation system and, until the trail was replaced by railroads in the late nineteenth century, functioned as the main pathway for conquest, migration, settlement, commerce, and culture in today's American Southwest. More than 400 miles of the original trail lie within the United States today, and stretch from present-day San Elizario, Texas to Santa Fe, New Mexico. This segment comprises El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail. It was added to the United States National Trail System in 2000 and is still in use today. This book guides the reader along the trail with histories and overviews of places in New Mexico, West Texas and the Ciudad Juarez area. It includes a broad overview of the trail's history from 1598 until the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s, and describes the communities, landscape, archaeology, architecture, and public interpretation of this historic transportation corridor.

George D. Torok completed a PhD in history at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1991, and is a history professor at El Paso Community College. Since 1999, he has worked with the United States National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and countless regional agencies and associations to organize events, develop interpretive sites, and promote a greater public awareness of El Camino Real. In 2003, he served as the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail Association's first president. He has written numerous articles and a guidebook to historic Appalachian mining towns.

"The first time I met the Beatles was through my former boyfriend... who saw them one night when he was wandering around Hamburg, and then he heard this beautiful sound of rock and roll music and he went down into a quite dark, filthy cellar where these boys were standing on a very, very tiny stage and [performing] in such a way that he was absolutely--let's call it knocked out--by their music, and by their looks, and everything around it. So he told me about it.... I just said, alright, I'll come with you. So we went there, and when I went down the stairs and looked at the stage, I was just amazed at how beautiful these boys looked. It was a photographer's dream.... Then, when I heard the music, it was even more fantastic for me.... After that first night, I went nearly every night to see them and that's how it started.... I asked them if they were willing that I take their pictures, and they [jumped] up and down with joy."

If you are a Beatles keenie and would enjoy seeing previously unpublished photos of the boys, this book is for you. It's a unique, bittersweet collection showing the joy and innocence which characterized the group's very early days together. A wonderful bonus is Astrid's introduction which provides information about these early days that was news even to this life-long Beatles fanatic!

In the early 1880s the peaceful villages along the San Francisco River, in western Socorro County of the New Mexico Territory, were invaded by Texas cowboys and their large herds of cattle. Conflict between the Spanish settlers and the rowdy Texas cowboys was escalating into intimidation and violence. Often after consuming forty-rod whiskey from Milligan's liquor store, the cowboys delighted in terrorizing the settlements along the river called the Frisco Plazas. In early October of 1884 the violence escalated into a gruesome incident, which left the local settlers in shock and fear of the Texas cowboys. The villagers were in dire need of a miracle. Young Elfego Baca answered the call. Elfego's efforts to bring law to the San Francisco valley resulted in a gunfight lasting over 36 hours. The well-armed cowboys shot approximately 4,000 bullets and dynamited the wood and mud shack, a jacal, in which Elfego took refuge and defended himself. In the longest gunfight of the old west, Elfego prevailed over the cowboys, unharmed. The intimidation and violence against the Spanish settlers stopped. Where does this kind of bravery originate and why did Elfego take it upon himself to protect and defend the settlers of the San Francisco valley? Was it Elfego Baca's distinct genealogy, his DNA, the life blood of centuries that flowed through him? Was Elfego destined to go to Frisco Plaza and confront the Texans, and was he destined to survive?

Robert J. Alvarado was born in Mesa, Arizona. After a tour in the Air Force, he graduated from Arizona State University in engineering. He spent most of his career in the computer software business, and represented a large computer company throughout Latin America. Alvarado later owned a small computer software business in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Proud of his Hispanic ancestry, Alvarado's passion for southwestern US history radiates into his writing, particularly stories from a Hispanic perspective.

Guts and Glory - Destined to Survive

I really enjoyed this book because the author provides a fascinating chronology of Spanish colonial history, starting with expulsion of the Moors from Spain, and continuing with the conquest of Mexico by the conquistadores; the settlement of New Mexico by Coronado in the 1540s; and the emergence of the Baca family, over a 300 year period, as respected community leaders in Socorro.
This book is more than just a history of one man's life and his personal courage in standing up against overwhelming odds to defend the people and things he believes in. Elfego Baca's actions succeeded in changing how one group of Americans persecuted another group of Americans; at least as far as overt violence and atrocities were concerned. And this marks a theme of this book ..... that one principled, self-driven person can prevail against overwhelming odds. In Elfego' case, this is why he is "destined to survive" . His quest continues the tradition of grit and determination to succeed displayed by his Spanish ancestors in reaching and colonizing the new world.
The book shows the inherent conflict between the US citizens of Spanish descent in eastern New Mexico, and the disruptive Texas cowboys who brought both their cattle and their violence into the region. The Texas cowboys, however, did not accept the Hispanic settlers as equal US citizens. They dogmatically followed the mantra: "Remember the Alamo" in their treatment of Hispanic settlers. It remained for Elfego Baca to make a difference.
This book is a great historical biography; it is entertaining, and it well illustrates life's difficulties in eastern New Mexico in the 1880's, when cultures clashed and extreme violence resulted. Photographic illustrations are interesting and complement the narrative very well.

Mr. Alvarado did a great job researching and gathering factual information for this book. He found relatives of Elfego Baca who supplied many of the pictures in the book and heard many stories of events outlined in the book. Alvarado placed the information in an order that made for easier reading than most historical books.

You can understand the pride of heritage in this well written and historical look at an amazing hero. Although the remarkable courage of Elfego Baca may not be as well known in American History as are events like the Alamo , for instance, it is well worth reading about this amazing piece of history.

Another Good Reference for Tradtional Interiors

From the pages of the British edition of the interior design magazine, THE HOUSE & GARDEN BOOK OF LIVING ROOMS, part of a series that focuses on a particular room, was published in 1991 and reprinted in 1994, hardcover. All photos are color, as one would expect from the glossy magazine. Most of the rooms are traditional although there are a few somewhat modern and post-modern; almost all the decorating schemes are from the 1980s. The majority of the rooms are located in England with a few in the United States and France. All are at least pleasant and a few are high style trend setters in their day.

The Manhattan apartment of Carroll and Milton Petrie designed by David Easton inspired many to copy his Americanized vision of the English Stately Home. A neo-Palladian villa for Josephine Abercrombie on a Kentucky thorobred farm by architect Quinlan Terry decorated by Anthony Browne also paralleled the trend towards the incorporation of comfort in stylish interiors. An English example of this 1980s fashion, still very attractive today, is shown in a Berkshire rectory decorated by Roger Banks-Pye of Colefax and Fowler. In summary, the architecture is often of a high quality and the decoration is generally interesting enough to serve as a reference for professionals and sophisticated do-it-yourselfers.

Elegant Designer Living Rooms from the Past

Elegant living rooms from the 1980's decorated by top designers in England and the United States are featured in this book. Organized around topics such as elegance and symmetry, a place for books, gilded highlights, the art of display, windows revealed, deep-buttoned comfort and country sophistication, the best of 1980's design is included. Although some of the rooms are dated, some are truly timeless. The color is vibrant and most of the images are full-page. Glad to see some of the best features of 1980's style is returning in a more edited version.

Taken from Chapter 3: Guessing games Charades Charades is a fun game to play when people come to visit. Players take turns being the actor. Each player writes down a word, name, or phrase on a piece of paper and puts it in a hat. The first actor takes a piece of paper from the hat. He or she must act out the mystery word or phrase within one or two minutes. Sometimes the actor gives clues such as pulling on an ear, a gesture that means "sounds like," and then acts out a word that rhymes with the word on the paper. The player who guesses the word or phrase is the next actor.

Lovely Historical Games

Very nice resource for the homeschool family. It has games that appeal to children and are easy to play. I have used games for a Little House on the Prairie party but it can also be used for field day, homeschool co-op, children's history club, at-home summer camp or just fun activities to do with children. I gave this book 4 stars because some of the rules were a little odd (and subjective at times) so I tweaked some rules but not all rules were exactly the same in every US region. Games were passed down by word of mouth and generation-to-generation by parents, so it is safe to say that not all rules were the same across the country. Even with all this, it is a great book to enjoy and play games with children and keep these historic games alive.

Not what I was looking for

I really wanted a book of games and rules that would have been played in colonial/pioneer times. This book has it to some degree, but it's in a story form that you have to lift the games out of. I wasn't very impressed.

Make some family values history with your children!

Children and adults will be tremendously entertained by Bobbie Kalman's book which is destined to become a treasured possession in your household.

Some of the games require nothing but imagination, like "Pinch, No Smiling," Charades, I Have a Basket and Taboo.

Families might especially enjoy the Work Party games, which make shared chores more fun. I wish I could give this book TEN stars!

I absolutely love it, and you will, too. Buy extra copies for gift-giving! Let's spread the joy around.
