Difficult Read, Not For Beginners

The material seems authentic enough, with a number of sources provided in the introduction (although hard to trace and verify.) The illustrations seem genuine, originating from old Chinese medical texts. However, the author's statement that this material is not well known in China either, set off something of a red flag.

Another issue has the author omitting certain information, such as times of day for certain postures, as well as their relation to the five elements. (This was stated in the introduction.) This makes certain sections of the text incomplete, and of questionable value to someone trying to get complete information.

The text descriptions accompanying the illustrations are either very obscure, and seem like more of a direct translation than an actual explanation of the subject depicted. An author's commentary, or if the author is not qualified, a TCM doctor's notes would have made this book more readable and understandable.

To the familiar, you will find descriptions of the Yijin Jing, the sitting Eight Pieces of Brocade, the 5 Animal forms, and several others. Unless already familiar, as I stated earlier, the text will be very confusing.

As it stands, the text is very obscure, some of the grammar is on the verge of confusing, and the terminology at times needs explanation (some of it is non-standard, and some outright archaic, even for qi gong practitioners.) As such, this book only gets 3 stars. A lot could have been done to make this book a genuine treasure to Qi Gong/TCM practitioner, but it seems the effort was not put in.

I would only recommend this for the most hard-core qi gong practitioners/historians, and the curious. Although in itself a valuable book, for the average reader, this will be of very little use.

Good for the price

This book contains a lot of interesting concepts, though I wish some terms were explained better. For example, it tells you to 'press the vertex' but doesn't explain what that means. The "Heavenly Drum" is defined as "the occiput" and I have no idea what that is (and it wasn't in my dictionary). Some things are worded as if literally translated such as 'closing the breath.' But not all items have these flaws and it has some very interesting techniques, drawings and diagrams. I'd say it's a good buy for the price.

More History than Instruction

This book is a collection of historical documents about qigong, massage, and some herbs. From a historical point of view, it's a very interesting book. From the point of view of "what should I do now," it's less valuable. Some of the advice--how to induce vomiting, for example--seem pretty dangerous to me. The qigong postures are described and illustrated, but the description is short on detail, and the illustration are period line drawings that are lacking in anatomical specificity. If you already study qigong and are interested in the history, it's a great book. If you are a beginner looking for instruction, make sure this isn't your only book.

Taken from Chapter 4: Food Gadgets The kitchens of the past had no refrigerators, running water, electric stoves, or microwave ovens, but the settlers had plenty of gadgets to help them prepare and cook their food. The kitchen fireplace provided the fire for cooking. Grain was crushed into flour using a mortar and pestle. Cream was dashed to make fresh butter in a butter churn. Apples were cored and peeled with an apple peeler, and nutmeg and peppercorns were ground in a spice mill. A sugar cutter was needed to break pieces from it.

Cute and Interesting book

This is a great book for describing common pioneering items that have since become obsolete. Many of the things described I had no idea what they were and would not have guessed just by looking at them. This would be a great book to read along with any of the 'Little House' books or just before visiting any American History museums.

Grade 4-8-Together, these three volumes cover the same topics that standard country studies do in one. While the books are attractive, with numerous color photos and clear subheadings, all of the information is readily available elsewhere, and much that is important has been omitted. Statistics are practically nonexistent. There is nothing on France's flag, money, national anthem, health care, or folk crafts. The chapters on the arts in Culture briefly mention only a handful of painters, writers, and composers, and the book concludes with a flat retelling of a story about Roland. Only Land has a map, and it does not include two major rivers, the island of Corsica, and other sites that are discussed in the text. The section on food in People is particularly vague and superficial. Local specialties aren't mentioned by name; there is no description of typical meals; and standard French foods like croissants, quiches, and cassoulets are ignored. The title ends with "Marcel's Sunday afternoon," a trite, unnecessary piece. Stick to Peter Moss's France (Children's, 1986).

Following the discovery of the decapitated corpse of Arthur Rochford Manby in his nineteen-room mansion in Taos, New Mexico, there quickly arose two schools of thought as to the event. One sect accepted that he was gruesomely murdered, while the second held to the belief that he had staged his death and left behind the cadaver of a stranger. The case was a bizarre enigma wrapped in riddles, confusion, betrayal and greed. Finally for posterity, and as relief to the guilty, it was labeled an unsolved crime. Today it is referred to as the ''Manby Mystery of Taos.'' This book contains very little mystery. Rather, it is the tragic account of Manby and his 35-year career in manipulation, extortion, high-grading and murder. Arriving in New Mexico from England in 1883, the 24-year-old Manby began his personal odyssey for El Dorado: the dream of building a vast empire in the Southwest. He finally does so in 1913 when becoming the owner of the 61,000 acre Martinez Grant of Taos. But after three years it slips from his grasp and he is left nearly penniless. In his last years he gradually decays mentality and emotionally. Looked upon as an eccentric, no one realizes how ill he has become. Finally having a falling out with a quartet of compatriots, in July, 1929, he is murdered and decapitated.

About the Author
James S. Peters was born in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1930. In the mid-1940s his family moved to California where at sixteen he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served three years as a medic. Later he spent ten years in the navy as a photographer and in 1964 he alighted in Taos, New Mexico and developed an avid interest in Southwestern American history. After living in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, he continued researching and writing articles on the frontier West. After retiring, he pursued his interests in writing and painting. His previous book, Robert Clay Allison, was also published by Sunstone Press.

J.B. Murray's abstract art leaves a vivid, immediate impression. Padgelek clearly explains Murray's African-Islamic and Evangelical Christian influences, an analysis which expands previous studies of this self-taught, visionary black artist. Padgelek's biography of Murray goes beyond academic analysis, to include Murray's overriding mission in his art-- a visionary experience of the Holy Spirit. Murray's essential sanity and commonsense within his religious context and 'calling' are sensitively treated. Although his work is primarily abstract, Murray often filled a painting's space with haunting, human faces and figures, as seen in the book's many illustrations. Padgelek adds to our appreciation of a unique talent. An excellent book!

It's nearly complete but not quite

There are a great amount of techniques in this book. There are even some rare joint lock techniques I hadn't seen anywhere else; however, they are not well organized. The techniques are scattered all over the place and one must hunt each one down through the pages in order to find them. If the material was separeted into more specific sections, I would have given it five stars. I don't think that the guide is incomplete as far as the techniques it contains but in its organization.

Not only the presentation of the art is not consistent, but also the techniques are not well-designed. About a half of the techniques are not actually usable in real defending purposes. The problem is that they will make you lose balance when using them. I bet the author has not tested those skills he explained yet. The author tried to be different from Bruce Lee, but that also introduced many difficulties. And that is absolutely not necessary!
The history presented by Jiro Shiroma is actually wrong. It was a Chinese weapon -- a real weapon used by martial artists during the Song Dynasty in China -- A.D. 960+. This is the earliest period when people actually used it as weapon. Nunchaku is an Okinawan name of the same thing invented by Chinese, whose name was Da Sau Zu meaning "swinging sticks."
Before Bruce Lee popularized on the films such a powerful weapon, the so-called Japanese Nunchaku, as weapon, did not exist at all. After his movies, Japanese started "reinventing" nunchaku for their own martial arts, especially Ninjutsu. However, today's Ninjas are only useful in movies! Bruce Lee's nunchaku was actually an Indian farming tool, introduced to him by his student Dan Inosanto. Bruce Lee simply called it "double sticks."
I learned "double sticks" from the book written and drawn by Bruce Lee, and it was well-designed, poweful, straightforward, and economical. The techniques are very easy to follow and no redundency at all! Actually, I learned it from the pictures only, but after that I started reading the descriptions. It helped me to understand the philosophy of his ideas about the art. His method are beautiful!
I think the best way to describe it is that it's an American-martial-art weapon invented by a Chinese American -- Bruse Lee. The origin of the sticks is India, or China as you please, and the techniques are the invention of Bruce Lee.
If you want to learn double sticks as a useful martial art, watch Bruce Lee's movies and you will learn most of the skills actually required for defending or fighting

this book is very clearly written and i could not think of any one better then jiro shiroma the best when it comes to nunchaku thats why i give it a 5 out of 5 stars because it has so many techniques. i cant stress it enough about how great this book is.

Pinto was afraid of all these things, but he was a very brave little boy. He decided he would try to find the secret mine himself. One night when his mother and grandfather and everyone in the village was asleep, he took some piñon nuts, three cold biscuits, a blanket and his bow and arrow and he and Ambrosio set out on the dangerous journey. How Pinto found the secret mine and brought home the turquoise is an absorbing adventure story for young readers. Wilfred S. Bronson wrote his first book at the age of eight. Called "Animal People," it started like this: "This book is for children who are interested in animals and birds. It has verey good pictures in it and children can understand it verey easily." He later learned to spell and wrote and illustrated many books for children with "verey good pictures" that they could understand. "Pinto's Journey," originally published in 1948, was written while he and his wife were living in New Mexico where he came to know his Indian neighbors and especially the small hero of this book.

Nostalgic trip

I bought this book for my grandson because my mother bought it for me. He has thoroughly enjoyed it at every re-reading. If there is are downsides, I believe some of the illustrations have been omitted in the reprinting and, in todays world of PC, there are stereotypes; but overall it is an excellant book written to inspire all little boys to persevere against long odds.

Pinto's Journey is the charming tale of a young Indian boy set in the New Mexico of yesteryear. Although written for children, it is nevertheless a very enjoyable adult read. Young Pinto Goodluck shows "true grit" as he and his burro, Ambrosio, journey in search of a secret turquoise mine. A lovely book, and the illustrations are equally delightful.

This children's book is so solidly written it's a delight for adults too. A nine-year-old Indian boy named Pinto embarks on a dangerous journey to get turquoise from a distant mountain. His jeweler grandfather is out of the precious stones and can no longer mine them himself. So Pinto secretly sets out with his burro. They encounter buzzards, a bear and a mountain lion. Along the way the boy uses all the skills he's been taught to survive in the wilderness. The detailed illustrations greatly add to this well-thought out story. For 4-6 grade independent readers.

Sifu Lamb is a Hong Kong trained master who focuses on good technique and applications for real life situations. The discipline is fluid based on center line principles and is easier on the joints than the Japanese hard styles. Wing Chun is the precursor to Bruce Lee's Jeet kune Do. Highly Recommend!
