And it should be, as Hay is the food editor of Australian Marie Claire magazine. The book will provide inspiration for accomplished cooks and easy-to-follow recipes that begin with the basics for those who are less assured in the kitchen. The basics are pretty similar to Delia Smith's, with instructions on how to scramble and poach eggs. Hay moves on quickly to a Caramelised Onion Frittata and Roast Pumpkin and Soft Quail Egg Salad. Similar examples follow with pasta and rice--after mastering a basic risotto, Hay offers several variations such as Miso and Shiitake Risotto and Saffron Porcini Risotto Cakes. Noodles, vegetables, poultry, and meat follow. You will learn how to make a delicious-looking Grilled Chicken and Fig Salad as well as Steamed Pork Buns. The final three chapters describe the most wonderful desserts using fruit, butter, and milk. The book is lavishly illustrated with top-class food photography. It's a work of art, but would be wasted on a coffee table. The best cookbook to get the mind to start creating.

I own a Foodservice company and have to create many upscale dinners. My clients usually give me two days notice of dinners if I am lucky. When I get a mental block i use this book and its beautiful pictures to get me back on track creating and making some very exciting dishes.
I do have to admit I do not read recipes, I find it easy to create based on vision then taste and flavor profiles of the final couse combination.

great on invention, may take work to perfect

i've tried a third of the recipes so far. although the recipes look pleasing to the eye, they may take some work to perfect. i do a great deal of cooking, but i found i wasn't really please with a dish until i did it at least three times. my notes in the margins in quite a few cases are as extensive as the text. i also found that with many dishes that have lime flavors, a very dry german reisling with critusy tones is excellent.

what an awesome cookbook

a friend recommended i get this book. she's made many of the recipes in the book and absolutely loved them. when i first started looking through it i was a little hesitant to try the recipes because the ingredient and flavor combinations are so different from what one normally sees. but it turns out that they work! and really well. everything i've made from this cookbook has been delicious. as i've made more of the recipes, i've gotten better at substituting ingredients here and there based upon what i have. many of the recipes in the book are good for that, which i really appreciate (it means that i'll actually use the recipes rather than the cookbook gathering dust on the shelf, because i don't happen to have some random spice that the author insists is crucial for the dish). also, the vegetable recipes are REALLY good, and very far from your normal boring vegetable recipes! they are tasty and actually use vegetables that have some amount of nutritional value.
a couple of recipes from the book that we've made already: the buttermilk pancakes are great, the salmon with chervil and roasted carrots and parsnips was astounding, the sweet potato (or was it yam?) pie with thyme, pumpkin gnocchi was excellent. i agree with the person who mentioned rieslings -- rieslings seem to go really well with a lot of food in this book.

This workbook is a great idea poorly executed. Some of the problems make no sense, and some of the answers in the answer key are just plain wrong. Math struggles are bad enough without having to struggle with poorly worded, unclear questions and incorrect answers. Don't waste your money or time on this workbook.

Great Verbal Practice in Math

As the standards and curriculum changed in math, the end of year tests in math have become reading tests. This handy little warm-up book provides daily practice with verbal math. Students have to "wade through all the words", as one of my students put it, to get to the heart of the problem. The more I use this book, the stronger my students' math vocabulary has become. Of course you do have to go over the problems after they have done them to re-enforce the words and concepts. There are some errors in the keys, but my students and I just shrug and go on...we know we're right! I love this book so much I bought it for 6th, 7th, and Algebra! My students like the quirky pictures, situations and trivia.

This reader contains selections (about 200 lines) from Vergil's Aeneid, Books I, II, and IV, designed for students moving from elementary or intermediate Latin into reading the authentic Latin of Vergil. Passages are accompanied by pre-reading materials, grammatical exercises, complete vocabulary, notes designed for reading comprehension, and other reading aides. Introductory materials and illustrations are included.

Special Features

Pre-reading materials for each passage of Latin, designed to help the student understand the underlying cultural and literary concepts in the Latin passage. short explanations related to the grammatical and syntactical usages that will be found in the passage, accompanied by exercises.

The first version of the Latin text with gapped words in parentheses and difficult noun-adjective pairings highlighted by the use of a different font complete vocabulary and grammatical notes on the page facing the Latin passage.

Any vocabulary word found in the passage but not in the notes is found in the pull-out vocabulary at the back of the book the second version of the Latin text in its unchanged form.

Literary notes on the page facing the unchanged Latin text post-reading materials for each passage designed to help the student understand Vergil's style of writing and to allow the student to reflect upon what has been read.

The last four Latin passages do not contain any of the transitional aides such as gapped words or the use of fonts. Notes on grammar, vocabulary, and literary analysis continue to be on the page facing the passage.

Ease into the Aeneid!

As language teachers well know, a student's transition from learning the basics of a new language system to reading literature with confidence can be very difficult. This transitional reader is easy to use in a variety of classroom settings. The material is presented in such a way that the instructor is allowed much freedom of choice in pacing and focus. It covers historical background and literary devices specific to Vergil which is necessary for a student to know when reading the original Latin. This book has graded readings which train the student how to be comfortable reading this difficult material on their own. Includes very helpful questions, practice, and vocabulary and uses changes of font to draw the reader's attention to important points. This book is not intimidating and manageable to use which can motivate students throughout your course to develop a sincere appreciation for the work.

Excellent introduction to Latin poetry

The Legamus series is hard to beat as an introduction to unadapted Latin literature, particularly poetry. I've used the the Vergil entry into the series twice and look forward to using it again. While I might wish for a slightly more extensive list of selections available for students, I can't complain about the selections that have been chosen. If you do use this book, be aware that you can't take it out of order. The selections are gradually, and judiciously so, stepped from giving the students more help to giving the students something that looks more like the level of help in Pharr or Boyd's editions of the Aeneid.

If the Aeneid is not to your taste, there are also books in this series for Ovid (also excellent), Catullus, Cicero and Horace (possibly the best of the series).

This book has its provenance in Zeev Raban's fourteen remarkable gouache illustrations of The Epic of Gilgamesh. The artist's family provided us with these previously unpublished and never-before printed works of art. Raban (1890-1970), who was born in Poland, came to Eretz Yisrael in 1912. Well-known for his work on Biblical themes, especially the Song of Songs, he only once embarked upon a project not derived directly FROM Jewish sources. His Gilgamesh represents an attempt to appropriate this ancient myth INTO nascent modern Hebrew culture and its emerging reservoir of visual imagery. Raban learned of Gilgamesh and its charms, and was inspired to illustrate it, through the virtuoso translation by the famous Hebrew poet Saul Tchernichovsky (1875-1943), which first appeared in 1924. Tchernichovsky's mastery of classical poetic forms enabled him to widen the horizons of Hebrew poetry and culture. Through his appropriation of the aesthetic forms and thought-worlds of ancient myths and epics such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey or the Finnish epic Kalevala, he was able to introduce to the modern Hebrew readership a new appreciation of the mores and ethics of pre-monotheistic traditions.

The English verse rendition of Gilgamesh by Danny P. Jackson, while adopting a contemporary, updated approach, still succeeds in retaining much of its original magic. The poem of the adventures of the Assyrian-Babylonian hero comes FROM the Library of Ashurbanipal of Nineveh. While dating FROM the beginning of the second millennium B.C., The Epic of Gilgamesh remains remarkably in tune with man's modern condition and sensibility. A young Englishman, George Smith, trained as a bank-note engraver, but immersed in the study of the ancient Assyrians was amazed to find that in translating a clay tablet in the British Museum he had come across the tale of the Great Flood, and the story of the ante-diluvian Akkadian King Gilmamesh. Today, that discovery in the 1870s, fleshed out by the archaeological recovery of more tablets with 'chapters' from the Epic of Gilgamesh, has become one of the cornerstones in the study of 3rd millennium B.C.E. history and society in Akkad and Babylonia.

The Epic was originally written in Sumerian (an unclassified language), and sometime later in Akkadian, a Semitic tongue akin to Hebrew and Arabic. There are many tales of a Great Flood in various parts of the world; it is difficult to say which are indigenous to a locale, and which are derived from other literature. There remains the question whether, as first believed with the discovery of the Assyrian text by Smith, the deluge described in Genesis was derived from a Sumerian-Akkadian source.

Gilgamesh the king and adventurer is, much like England s King Arthur, mainly romantic legend based probably on a real life figure, the heroic Gilgamesh figure ruled the city of Uruk (modern Warka in southern Iraq, the biblical Erech) for 126 years. His adventures carried him far abroad until he gained what he long sought, the one man and his family who alone survived the Great Flood and thus had gained the secret of eternal life. The aura of Gilgamesh survived the millennia, known in classical literature as Gilgamos, King of the Babylonians.

But the power of the story, the all too human passion exposed in this drama, has much to offer a modern audience beyond the halls of academia. Therein lies the rationale for this volume, large in format, rich in design, and handsomely illustrated. Here the poet Danny Jackson provides an eloquent verse translation of the Epic into English accompanying a 1924 Hebrew translation by another poet, Saul Tchernichovsky. Interleaved are evocative illustrations by Zaban, in the dramatic style typical of the Jerusalem Bezalel School that was active in the post World War I era. Both poets and painter must have been attracted by the heroic dimensions and powerful images of the Epic, reminiscent of the massive sculptures and monumental buildings of the Sumerians and Akkadians. Completing the volume are three thoughtful, as well as thought-provoking, essays detailing the psychological impact of the Epic. David S. Han analyzes the adventures of Gilgamesh as a journey of psychological development; James G. Keenan offers a summary appreciation of the Epic; and Sidoon Ofrat focuses on the work of the painter Zaban, suggesting that the Gilgamesh paintings were made in 1954, some thirty years after he had illustrated The Song of Songs (Shir HaShirin.)
