About the Author
Randy Hendricks teaches English at the State University of West Georgia. He is the author of Lonelier than God: Robert Penn Warren and the Southern Exile.

James A. Perkins is professor of English at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. He has been an NEH Fellow at Yale University, New York University, and Princeton University, and was awarded a Fulbright in 1998. He is also an award-winning poet. His previous publications include Snakes, Butterbeans, and the Discovery of Electricity, and Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men: Three Stage Versions which he coedited with James Grimshaw.

Hendricks and Perkins were both graduate students of Drake at the University of Tennessee.

These true accounts are Lina Magaia's attempt to bring to an international public the reality of rural life in her country, where people are terrorized by the Mozambique National Resistance (MNR), a group with clear ties to the South African apartheid regime and ex-colonialists now in Portugal. While the MNR is often represented as "freedom fighters" in the American and British press, Lina Magaia's refutation is deadly clear. The events she relates are horrific and gut-wrenching. The stories vary in style; sometimes they are short and shocking as an axe to the neck, sometimes they are drawn out like a keening wail. Still others start out slowly - telling the reader about the beauty of what one woman has been able to produce from the land, or the love between a young couple - only to end up with a brutal description of total, barbaric destruction. This is not a book for the weak of heart; it is easier to pretend such things do not exist. Incomplete without the first volume

This book presents a lot of information, and presents it well.
However, it makes VERY frequent references to techniques presented in Vol I, and it does not present those techniques again. Several pages are dedicated to the sole purpose of explaining how important it is that the reader master the techniques of the first book before moving on to the techniques in this book. Therefore, if you are looking to build a practice out of this book, you will need to also read the first volume.

First let me say that I have every book, translation, and DVD ever produced on Ba Gua. Most show form movements or the history of the art. This book (both volumes 1 and 2) also tell the history of Ba Gua, but this is the only book I've seen that covers the stepping method of Yin Fu Ba Gua so completely, and the Fa Jin full body movements. Without the explosive power, the forms are almost useless in self defense.

The companion DVDs are excellent in showing the intricate movements of the body to deliver real power. I know why these are impossible to find...nobody wants to give their copy up.

You can't learn a martial art from a book. But if you are already in training, this fills in a lot of gaps, and takes your training to a higher level.

You know when your instructor shows you a strike and his power seems almost supernatural? This book and Dvds explain the mechanics of how to generate that power.

And Dan Miller makes these ideas easy to understand...a real feat in itself.

Certainly worth he price of admission.

A wonderful follow up to the first volume

After reading the first volume, I sought out the student group under Sifu Park nearest me and began training. Sifu Park is a wonderful teacher and holds nothing back in imparting the system which he has inherited. Volume II of Sifu Park's book contains yet another wealth of information while emphasizing the basic and fundamental concepts laid out in the first. It is meant to read and used as a written reference for those who have already learned the content of the first volume. I write "learned" rather than "mastered" because it takes years of practice to truly master the contents of the first volume. In the second volume, Sifu Park begins to build up the student's repertoire of techniques, fundamental exercises, and theoretical concepts. Generally speaking, in Sifu's school and study groups, it takes about a year to two years (depending on your background and willingness to practice) to get a handle on all of the teachings from the first voume. The second volume could easily take six to seven years of practice before one learns everything. Sifu also begins to show some fighting applications and the "variations on a theme" concepts that are Pa Kua trademarks. If one wishes to learn the exercises within these books, the videos are essential if a student group is not readily available. However, without the videos, the books give excellent insights into not only what is known as the most effective internal martial art created but also into general martial arts practice, applications, and the building of good fundamentals.

[[VIDEOID:32736131]]Keith Parkinson is a fantasy genre illustrator using traditional medium. He has created countless illustrations for fantasy books, games and other commissions.

His costume design for characters looks natural and most importantly always believable for required fantasy setting. After looking at the costume language, I probably can't imagine the characters wearing anything else. It just feels right.

Majority of the paintings are on human characters, and the very few monsters illustrations look great too. There's a good physical form to all the characters he drawn.

For book covers printed on small novels, the amount of detail put into the paintings is amazing. I guess it's the level of detail that gives his illustrations that level of realism.

It is also interesting to observe the type of composition used in book covers. The characters and action are always stage inside the frame. Rarely are any characters cropped. It does feel strange if not told that most of them are covers.

This book is terrible but I understand the purpose

Hotep, I first read this book when I was 11 or 12 and I really liked it then. Unfortunately, this book is hideously flawed with regard to accuracy. As I grew older and increased my personal knowledge of Kemet/Egypt the inadequacy of this work became ridiculously obvious. James' representations of Kemetic thought are completely erroneous. That being said, I do not side with James' other critics on this page. I appreciate what he attempted to do for African people and I understand the brutality of the environment in which he operated. I honor him as an Ancestor. At the same time I am not pleased when I see people (particularly Black people) using this inaccurate work in their attempts to combat the well armed and well entrenched Eurocentrists and Neo-Eurocentrists. Neo-Eurocentrists and Eurocentrists find this book incredibly useful to their cause. Stolen Legacy is used to dismiss a diverse Afrocentric movement as a bunch of dreamers, demagouges, and ill prepared romantics. Another note: I found it very amusing how certain contributors to this page confidently stated or implied that "the Egyptians are not Black" or that "Egypt had no connection to Sub-Saharan Africa." (smile) Very cute, however one might actually want to study Kemetic religion, history, language, and culture before opening their mouths to make such inane statements. This is particularly the case with regard to Egyptian history, language, religion, and culture. The "Blackness" of this African people is not really an issue for me (I'm sure Kemet was not absolutely homogeneous)but it annoys me when silly people confidently assert that these AFRICANS were not Black. Another note: Kemet/Egypt is not the only great African civilization. Those who truly want to study Africa, live as Africans, and or assist in her ressurection cannot allow themselves to be confined to to a single branch of the African family. One more VERY IMPORTANT thing. Black/African people, particularly those who call themselves "Afrocentrists" need to stop focusing so much upon our relationship to Greece and other European civilizations. 1. We need to study Africa and our people in our own right and through our own eyes. "Proof" of our contribution or relationship with a European Civilization should not be viewed as a way of legitimizing or increasing the status of a given African Civilization. 2. Greece and European Civilizations can stand in their own right. Eurocentrists and Neo-Eurocentrists do not usually view themselves as such. They view themselves as "orthodox", "careful", "OBJECTIVE", and "SCHOLARLY" (whether they are or not). The fact is they are the established camp and they hold a greater following upon the masses. We must put works such as "Stolen Legacy" to rest and make sure that in our pursuits we are commited to accuracy and truth. This is the only path towards victory. The multitude of African Civilizations are interesting, wonderful, and legitimate without any fantasy and romanticism added to them. Black Egyptians

An anonymous reviewer who calls himself "A reader" asked the question, "If Egyptians were black, why aren't they black now?" The answer is, much of Egypt's modern population IS black (Malcom X noted that the people of Egypt were blacker than he). Those Egyptians who are not black are the product of Roman and Arab invasions centuries ago that resulted in intermarriages. The modern Islamic Egyptian culture was imported by light-skinned Arabs. Many historians agree that even until the time of Arabian invasion, the vast majority of egyptians were black(negroid). I hope that this was helpful.

STOLEN LEGACY gives credence to why there was so much resistance to the Egyptian Body of work, and also presents an addition to the many conditions that led to the Euro cascade into the so-called "Dark Ages". The variety of paradoxes the text explores is corroborated by recently reported analytical evidence that rightly attributes the advances in mathematics, science, medicines, and philosophy to the ancient Egyptian (and Assyrian) Dynasties. The development of the design, engineering, and construction of the greatest monuments in ancient history, centuries before the Greco-Roman "fathers" arrived on the scene is explained. Significant Egyptian philosophic achievements and theories, which were in vogue at the end of the Neolithic period were a lot more widespread than conventional wisdom would have us believe. The rationale for why the so-called "Fathers of Hellenistic Thought" were generally persecuted for advancing ideas they plagiarized from a True Mother Culture is advanced with a considerable body of credible, supporting evidence. Unfortunately, current politics and social dynamics of the Western World will continue to portray the important contributions of the Dynasties to human social evolution as being of "Hellenistic" Origin.

Comprehensive and engaging

This book presents a comprehensive survey of Muslim communities in Europe in the mid 1990s. The volume is organized into two parts, the first part covering Muslims in Eastern Europe and the second Muslims in Western Europe. As to be expected, the first part focuses on the long-standing Muslims of Eastern Europe, how their communities were established, and how they relate to the non-Muslim communities in their countries today. The second part of the book turns to Muslim immigrants in Western Europe, their recent arrival, and their continuing identity as Muslims within societies that had expected them to assimilate. Although each chapter is written by a different author, the quality of the writing is exceptionally good and thoroughly readable throughout.
One of the strongest chapters is that by Jim House about Muslims in France, in which he analyzes the different identities that are manifest in French Muslims. It would have been very interesting if the writers on Muslims in Eastern Europe had also considered not just the political and ethnic meaning of "Muslim", but also how Eastern European Muslims demonstrate their religious beliefs. Another particularly interesting analysis is Aake Sander's analysis of how Swedes expected immigrant Muslims to assimilate and why the Muslims did not fulfill the expectations. Although well grounded in the specific instance of Sweden and Muslims, many of Sander's points could easily be extended to other countries and other minority groups as global contact increases in the future.

The new academic trend now is to produce books on Islam in the Western countries. It also reflects the concern which is being felt in the West about Muslims.

This an excellent study produced by the three editors, for in one volume there is comprehensive coverage of both Eastern Europe (countries like Macedonia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Albania and Greece) and Western Europe (covering Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Italy). If one compares the level of analysis of the two Europes in this volume, then the analysis offered by academics in Western Europe is much more sophisticated. This may be due to the fact that there is more data on Muslims in Western than in Eastern Europe.

Islam has become a "problem" in Eastern Europe only after the demise of communism but it was always perceived as a problem in Western Europe. Nonneman's observation is correct when the observes that "Perceived discrimination and insensitivity to cultural differences led some Muslims in Western Europe to identify with some of the causes of their fellow Muslims in the Middle East, for instance the Iranian revolution. Large sections of public opinion in the host societies then reacted to these attitudes and to the perceived excesses of radicalised Islam abroad by stereotyping the Muslim communities in their midst as a threat." This is a dilemmic situation and is not going to abate.

So the question is: that if the Muslims in Europe identify with Islamic movements in the Middle East, will they be victimised more in the Western countries?

It is quite natural for Muslims to identify with problems of Muslims in the Middle East, which, it must be stated, are quite often caused by the collaboration of Western governments and their allies - the secularised dictatorships in the Middle East . So along with such studies produced by Nonneman etc - there is a need for analysis as to how much Western implication is also to be blamed. For example, the Rushdie case caused a furore, but no furore has been caused by the banning of the book by Kitty Kelly on the Royals or earlier of the Spy Catcher.

This question needs to be addressed. The head scarves affair in France became an issue - but it isn't the "human right" of a person to chose his faith and wear as he pleases. Nudity can but the covering of the lady cannot possibly trample on the sensibilities of other persons! Such questions needs to be discussed. In the other words, any discussion, debate or discourse about Islam being the "problem" in the West needs to take Western responsibilities and implications and its consequences on board.

Vertovec's excellent chapter on Britain looks at how the Muslims have become conspicuous in the "public sphere" and observes that "new structural frameworks are needed for engaging Muslims in public life". House's paper on France gives a good in-depth surveys of how Islam is perceived in that country. Karakasoglu's chapter gives a good exposition of Muslims in Germany. What is the "Muslim argument" has been unfolded very well by Sander in his piece on Sweden.

Nonneman in his excellent introduction had raised a series of questions which needed to be answered which were: "how does the situation of Muslims in Western and Eastern Europe compare? How Muslims are the Muslims in Western and Eastern Europe? How important are religious elements (rather than ethnic/linguistic elements) in these Muslim's relations with other Europeans? What role is or has been played by the variation in historical experience?" From the point of view of the questions based above by Nonneman - the papers have done justice to it within their own contexts. But questions of what is Eastern and Western European Islamic policy towards Islam still needs to be raised, deciphered and explored in other volumes.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!

A visually captivating collection of spectacular properties, Scandinavian Design will take you on a private historical tour of some of the most magical homes. This spectacular architecturally rich part of the world, Lars Bolander captures what I imagined is the essence of this region and so eloquently presents it in a visual experience, which I will cherish.

Fantastic Lars

Scandinavian design fans will rejoice as this book takes us into
previously unphotographed private homes in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Another cause for celebration... Mr. Bolander opens up his vast rolodex of
resources so you can bring the look home! This book is a must for everyones
design library.

WHo Knew??

Lars Bolander's trained, talented eye has brought into sharp focus the tremendous contribution Scandinavia has made to home design. The pictures are amazing and express so many ideas that are new to me and so helpful and creative.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it now has a blizzard of bookmarks!

I look forward to Mr. Bolander's next book with great anticipation.
