Taken from Chapter 7: The General Store The people in early villages used very little money. They traded goods and services for other goods and services. If they had extra grain, they exchanged it for planks from the sawmill or eggs from another farm. People who were skilled in making things traded the products they made for goods and services offered by others. This type of trading was called the barter system.

Way too many typos, misspellings and incorrect grammar usages to be "educational" as touted by the homeschooling program we use
By Kathy
This book began with a first sentence of "When you visit an historic site" which led to our first discussion between myself and the 3rd grader I am homeschooling. This is required reading for the 3rd grade history in the Catholic homeschooling program we are using. The discussion was something like "since when did h become a vowel?" After research on the internet, I find that this is an acceptable British usage but not an acceptable usage in the United States, indicating this is more of a Canadian book than a United States book. Okay, so maybe we learned some cultural differences. However, the errors became more prevalent. Page 5 - "Guides at historic villages where costumes and pretend to be settlers who lived many years ago." Is there a sentence there somewhere? I finally concluded "where" should have been "wear". Page 11 has "Two fo these tasks were grinding grain and making plans from logs." I'm assuming fo should be of and it took us several pages to figure out plans should be planks. Page 21 quote: "The copper brought planks of wood from the sawmill and shaped them perfectly to make sure his containers did not leak." We figured out copper should have been cooper (a barrelmaker according to the book) and brought should have been bought. For a required book for a 3rd grader, I would expect more attention to detail, typos, etc. This is for education after all. So unless you want this to be a vocabulary guessing game of what the author wrote versus what the author meant, I would pass on this book.
