Lucid editing provides a thrilling excursion

I'm sure I must have given up on my original copy of DIVINE COMEDY after "Inferno." But the lucid editing of this edition, with abundant footnotes, make clear and easy that which I could never decipher. With Virgil, Beatrice & Kathryn leading the way, the trip through Inferno, Purgatory & Paradise was a thrilling excursion.

Excellent Treatment of a Classic

Lindskoog does an excellent job with the translation and analysis of this book. This would be an excellent version of The Inferno for anyone not familiar with Dante's prolific use of analogy and historical reference. I recommend this version with my full confidence that any reader will find it enjoyable and informative.

Wit and Wisdom Abound

The Divine Comedy is an adventure that couples wit with wisdom. This translation is very accessible with full page illustrations and original notes. I have read several translations and this is my favorite. If interested, I am selling my copy. It's in excellent condition (hardback, 1997)

Eckerman is dutiful and respectful. And he asks the great man questions about his art and his view of the world. Goethe is usually very interesting , and gives information and insight which can be gotten nowhere else. In one exhange he for instance explains why his works cannot be ' popular' but are suited for readers are a certain special kind of mind and heart. In another he utters these well known words about his life and art.

"I have ever been esteemed one of Fortune's chiefest favourites; nor will I complain or find fault with the course my life has taken. Yet, truly, there has been nothing but toil and care; and I may say that, in all my seventy-five years, I have never had a month of genuine comfort. It has been the perpetual rolling of a stone, which I have always had to raise anew. My annals will render clear what I now say. The claims upon my activity, both from within and without, were too numerous.

My real happiness was my poetic meditation and production. But how was this disturbed, limited and hindered by my external position! Had I been able to abstain more from public business, and to live more in solitude, I should have been happier, and should have accomplished more as a poet."

Where documents are lacking, history becomes the telling of educated guesses and informed theories based on the mute testimony of whatever artifacts, if any, are available. There is, however, no lack of documentation for the ongoing "Fundamentalist-Moderate Controversy" in the Southern Baptist Convention. In fact, disciplined selection is necessary to keep this collection within manageable limits. The present selection is excellent: all sides are represented and the events of the ongoing SBC "holy war" are replayed by the news releases, sermons and addresses, motions and resolutions through which those events originally were played out. The documents have been changed only to fit these pages. This is not all the story, but it is a good part of the story of a people called Southern Baptists. It is a story we all need to know and remember. We cannot undo or redo what has been done. We can learn from what has happened. What is history for? Not just for the historian, but for all of us, these primary and key "documents of the controversy" tell the story. Walter Shurden's overview and introductions along with his annotated chronology set the stage, reminding us where we were when. Then the reporters and preachers, the movers and shakers, the principals and sometimes even pawns go to "Action!" and tell the story in their own words, which, after all, is the way it happened.

Helpul Resource for Southern Baptists

Published in 1996, Walter Shurden's "Going for the Jugular" is an extremely helpful resource for those desiring to read and study primary source documents pertaining to the Conservative Resurgence of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Coming from the perspective of the moderates, Shurden groups fifty public domain readings into three time periods, 1979-1983, 1984-1987, and 1988-1991. In Shurden's mind, these three periods represent the three distinct time frames of the controversy.

The first, 1979-1983, marks the period when both conservatives and moderates claimed various victories in the Convention. The second, 1984-1987, gives readings from the period when conservatives gained great momentum. Finally, the third, 1988-1991, documents the time when the fundamentalists delivered the knockout punch to the moderates.

Some of the notable documents included in the book are: Adrian Rogers' Pastor's Conference Sermon (1979), Roy Honeycutt's "Holy War" Convention address (1984), The Glorieta Statement (1986), and the SBC resolution on the priesthood of all believers (1988).

If you are a Southern Baptist, it is important for you to know where you have come from. As one man said to me recently, "Knowing history gives you wisdom for the future." This is very true, and it is unfortunate that many Southern Baptists do not know, or care, about the battles waged in the past. As one who celebrates the Conservative Resurgence, I disagree with Shurden's overall perspective of the Inerrancy Controversy; however, his book is a useful tool for those seeking to learn about recent events in our Southern Baptist heritage.

A Great Read for those wanting to understadn the COnservative Resurgence

I would never have selected this book for myself, but a professor in Seminary required it for a class, so...I begrudgingly read it. As I began to dig into it, I became intrigued at the perspective. As a matter of full disclosure, I am a product of the "Conservative Resurgence (CR)" of the Southern Baptist Convention, and a pastor. I had heard of the CR, and read about the CR, but had never considered the movement from the perspective of those who were more "liberal" or "progressive" who left to form the Conservative Baptist Fellowship (CBF).

This book explaines in documentary style how the SBC was "taken over" by conservatives and "liberal theologians" were shut out. While I disagree with that characterization, and would not even attribute the success of the CR as heavliy to the leaders involved as the author here does, I had never seriously considered how the movement was perceived from the other side.

I benefited from the book and thoroughly enjoyed the read. Don't tell my old professor, but I am glad he assigned it as a supplemental read for his class.

If you are a student of Baptist history or simply a student of religion, I recommend the book.

About the Author
Matt Dixon is an exercise physiologist and an elite triathlon coach. He is founder and president of purplepatch fitness, a fitness and coaching company that caters to triathletes and endurance enthusiasts of all levels, from world champions to beginners.

In just five years, Dixon s purplepatch athletes have earned over 150 professional Ironman(r) and Ironman 70.3(r) championships and podium finishes, 50 of which are wins. Dixon has helped over 100 athletes to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

Dixon is a former professional triathlete and two-time Olympic trials finalist in swimming. He has a master s degree in clinical and exercise physiology and contributes regularly to Triathlete, LAVA, Outside, and USA Triathlon magazines. He has also written for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Outside, Men s Fitness, and Men s Health.

Decent collection of art, but a short one.

I was not familiar with Matt Dixon's work until I picked up this and Girls on Top Volume 1. It's a pretty thin book. They really should have combined volumes 1 and 2 into one book. There are some paintings that I really love, but there are others that just seem rushed. You don't see consistent detail, which makes me think there's a lot of older material mixed in with newer. Another thing I was expecting from judging the cover images was a little more "mature" material. It's all "good-girl" style pin-up art. There's no nudity or anything graphic whatsoever. I guess when I see girls dripping with blood on the cover, I expected something a little edgier. I don't hate it, but I'm not in love with it either. He does paint his women on the chunkier side, which is great. No supermodels here.

Not so much attitude

Here is volume two of girls with a bad case of attitude as they struct their way through this collection of your non-normal pin-up girls.

The themes are still many and varied but the bad ass attitude is a bit more tamer I thought. The beautiful, more scantly clad buxom damsels are still gracing the pages, but the fun loving, ass-kicking of volume one is missing.

Again the title accompanies the piece, and a note about the model Caroline Munro and her thoughs of Matt is in the front, which makes this collection acceptable.

I am a bit disappointed with this volume but still glad to have it in my collection as it still has very good artwork leaning towards the more normal painting you will find elsewhere. Overall it is still worth 4 1/2 stars and should be added to your first volume, otherwise some very gorgeous, buxom and fearless women will be missed.

This book has a lot of illustrations, in fact every page has a full color illustration! The depictions of the females are very voluptuous,sexy, and a bit whimsical! So, if you like this Kind of art this book is for you. What I didn't like about it is that the author should have included some text about each illustration . I think that would have been nice.

Cooking for One

A few years back I accidentally dropped my copy of Murdoch Books Family Circle Cooking for One in the kitchen sink. I dried it out, but the pages were all wrinkled and hard to read. I scoured the shops and the internet for a new copy, but was told it was out of print. I used it so much (cooking for two or three of us)that I wanted an undamaged copy to give to my daughter, and another one for our holiday house. The macaroni cheese recipe is fail safe, as is the spiced chicken with pear. The meals are a good size - I double the quantities given when cooking for the three of us. There is a good variety of types of cuisine and the flavors appeal to a wide range of tastes. The photographs give step-by-step guidance, and all the finished dishes look so appetizing. It is a good book for a beginner as well as for an experienced cook who might be learning to reduce the quantities prepared. I am delighted to see that Amazon has copies for sale - buy it quick - it's not too late for Christmas!

Another great book from Ms. Williams

Like Ms. Williams other books about Roman culture and mythology, this text is highly readable and useful as a supplement to any mythology course. My teenage son absconded with my copy as soon as it came in the mail and my students had to wait while he devoured it. He reports that it was a really interesting book, and enjoyed reading it.

I've been reading this with my five year old son and it gives very interesting facts about desert animals. It has more information than the very basic books and not too overwhelming. It also has pages about both types of camels, so if your child likes camels, this is the book for you.

I've had this book for a few years and I can't say enough great things about the recipes. They are creative and delicious. The step-by-step instructions and photos are very helpful. Color compenidum of painting at the Venice Accademia

The Accademia is an astonishing gallery for Venetian painting starting with the late middle ages through the 18th century. I looked in vain in the Accademia book store for a volume with color reproductions of the paintings, and on my return found this big, heavy volume on Amazon. It covers all the paintings, and for em those after the 17th century are of much less interest. However, this book is an excellent place to get the marvelous paintings in the collection, from Veneziano through Tintoretto, in large and detailed reproductions of excellent quality. To my eye on my visit in May 2010 the Bellinis look as though they have been cleaned and restored since the book was published. But the book is an incomparably better record and memento of the Accademia than anything available in its book store.
