In this epic novel spanning three generations of the Schneider family, Leonard Schonberg unfolds the lives of three unforgettable women: Hannah, Pearl, and Sarah. After emigrating from Europe in 1913, Hannah and her father, Isaac, overcome poverty and tragedy in New York. They make a new life for themselves in the rough and tumble mining town of Butte, Montana. Introduced to the pleasures of love by Madame Claire, the owner of a brothel, Hannah blossoms into maturity, but the bright future that awaits her dissolves when she is victimized by rape. Pearl, the mixed-race child borne by Hannah, grows up in an orphanage knowing nothing about her parents. She falls in love with Nathan Rubin, a young premedical student, but their plans for the future are irrevocably altered when Nathan is seriously wounded during World War II. Peal, tormented by her abandonment as an infant, finds it difficult to bond with her own daughter, Sarah. Sarah, attending college in New York City on a scholarship, has her plans for a literary career derailed when she marries Roger Delaney, an advertising executive. She becomes progressively more unhappy with her job and marriage. Matters come to a head when Sarah learns she is pregnant and receives word that her mother is dying. Sarah returns to Montana and discovers the secret of her mother's past and this makes it possible for Sarah to take control of her life.

will make a wonderful chick flick

"Legacy" by Leonard Schonberg tells of three generation of women and their struggles to discover themselves. The story begins as Hannah, a young child, watches her house and mother go up in flames. To escape the grief, she and her father, Isaac, flee from Germany to America.
America is not as glamorous as they had expected. Work is harder than it was in Germany. Employers are not as cooperative with their employees. A strike breaks out. Isaac's friend is killed in a strike-related mob. Isaac and Hannah flee to Montana to escape the memories of the strike and their friend's death.
In Montana, Hannah becomes a woman. She has to learn to deal with her changing body, sexuality, tragedy, and future. Isaac tries to help her, but the physical changes he sees in her often embarrass him. He, too, is struggling with his present and future.
The second woman that is introduced is Pearl. She is of mixed race, but she is unsure of which races. She is an orphan that grew up thinking of nuns as her family. No one adopts her because she is of mixed heritage. The nuns want her to join the convent. She knows that she will be taken care of if she does so; however, her heart is not in it. What shall she do? Will she be strong enough to make her way outside the convent?
Sarah is the third woman. She is a child prodigy that has a talent for writing. She leaves her dreams of writing for a high-paying job, marriage, and recognition. Will she be happy with her sacrifices? If she does quit her job in the rat-race, will her materialistic husband understand?
"Legacy" is emotionally wrenching. I recommend reading it with tissues nearby. Schonberg writes so well that the reader can actually feel the internal struggles of each character. I am so amazed that a man can convey what females often feel as they mature through childhood and womanhood.
The story starts somewhat slowly at first, but toward the end, it is impossible to put down. I hope that Schonberg has started writing the screenplay, because this will make a wonderful chick flick. If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck on a deserted island, you will want "Legacy" with you.

A Must-Read!
By A Customer
From the first page though the last, this is a wonderfully written, compelling story of a family's journey through several generations. But this is not a typical family or a typical book. I simply couldn't put it down. The story spans most of the last century and does an expert job getting the reader into the minds of the characters through the decades. Each part is a fully believable period piece with excellent descriptions and details from places as varied as Montana, New York and Eastern Europe. This is a sad book, but ultimately an uplifting one about the resiliency of the human spirit.

A wide range of interesting people
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book - it is very story driven in that there are numerous unexpected twists and turns so it is not predictable, as so many family sagas are. The characters are interesting and the story rings true. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys generational novels. I particularly liked the way the author wove together many different types of people, ranging from Jews emigrating from Europe, to the Chinese laborers in Montana to a madam of a brothel. Their interactions, misunderstandings and camaraderie made for interesting, page turning material.
