Review
''Harvest the Rain is the book I have been waiting for: a detailed 'how to' for people and communities wanting to take a major step in saving the world's water written by a passionate water conservation advocate. Let this practical, entertaining and challenging book be your guide to your own--and the world's water secure future.'' --Maude Barlow, author of Blue Covenant and Senior Advisor on Water to the President of the United Nations General Assembly

''This book will not only make you a true believer in the regenerative power of harvesting rain--it will show you how. Harvest the Rain is full of practical solutions to our water shortages and points the way to a climate-resilient future. If we want thriving landscapes, abundant food, strong communities, and sustainable economies, we can start by treasuring rain.'' --Andy Lipkis, Founder and President of TreePeople and Ashoka Fellow

''Harvest the Rain is not just another true horror story about impending environmental apocalypse. Nor is it a dry how-to book about water use. Downey makes us feel the reverence that cultures throughout human history have felt for water falling from the sky.'' --Times Higher Education

An outstanding introduction to water collection, storage and management
By Windy Dankoff
It's easy to put barrels under your gutters. They fill quickly, don't store much, and don't offer a means of easy distribution. So what do you do? This book takes you boldly into all aspects of rain harvest for the home (and community). Downey illustrates pipes and cisterns in practical detail, but emphasizes passive techniques – using the ground itself. Downey's professional permaculture background comes to play here, showing minimalistic enhancements to the landscape so it becomes its own catchment and storage. He gives a broad introduction to a variety of creative ways to save, use and re-use water. The book has helpful quotes from experts, and references to other recent work in the field, and it's well indexed.

Nate has a breezy writing style that sounds like advice from a friend. It's a great place to start, and a place to return to because there's just so much here to soak up!

Reasonable
By Michael Brown
The text really should qualify as Brad Lancaster's superior series of books, that this is for drylands not temperate zones. The author wants to inspire which is admirable, though there is a New Age feeling to much of his boosterism. The diagrams are helpful and overall explanations are good. It is a reasonable book for the Southwest, the southern Plains and California.

the mulching ideas are good, but according to my husband (this was his birthday present) the other suggestions aren't really feasible. The "mother earth" lingo is annoying. Plain speaking is much more to our liking.
