Good value for money

I was on an interrail and bought many of these LP phrasebooks and I must say they helped me out. They have phrases that you don't learn if you take a beginner's course in Portugese or any other language. They also have some interesting facts printed inside little boxes, they are fun to read. Although I don't know whether these phrasebooks are suitable for the complete beginner, because....well, when you ask someone "What kind of art you interested in?", I don't think you will understand the answer if you haven't studied any Portugese prior to your trip. But it's great for brushing up your skills and it really helped me on my trip to Portugal.

Great content, not so great printing!

Content-wise, I have been very pleased with this phrasebook. The pronunciation is for continental Portuguese, which is what I was after, and the content is great for learning the language. The notes on differences in Brazilian and continental usage are also clear and useful.
I've learned almost as much grammar from this phrase book as from the grammar books that I bought at the same time. My only complaint, and it's a significant one, is the font! In anything but perfect lighting, it's very difficult to tell an "a" from an "o", and the brown ink used for Portuguese words doesn't help. For a book that you keep in your pocket and read in all sorts of places, this is a big drawback.

Another great title from Lonely Planet. Useful and to the point phrases, clear division by subjects and situations, pronunciation guide which really works - everything you would expect from a good phrasebook, plus a comprehensive enough dictionary.

Lonely Planet was so kind to include cultural tips about Portugal that also helped a lot.

Note that there are significant differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese, and this book is about European Portuguese (while it is very well emphasized in the book, maybe Lonely Planet should include it in the title). If going to Brazil, look for a Brazilian Portuguese phrasebook. Other former Portuguese colonies like Mosambique, Capo Verde, East Timor use European dialect.

One small drawback is that the content obviously isn't reviewed often. For example, the currency of Portugal in the book is "escudo" which has been extinct for a few years already after the introduction of euro. But since it is an extra, I still give it well earned 5 stars.

Philosophy meets superb science.

The full title of this book is "Mind From Matter? An Essay of Evolutionary Epistemology". It is a compilation of lectures delivered at Caltech in the mid 70's by Max Delbruck, one of the preeminent biologists of the 20th century. The insights in this book are so refreshing and deep, I must wonder why this book has not received far greater attention than it has. It is one of the best books I have ever come across for demonstrating just how critically important science is to philosophy. If you have any interest in how science impinges on epistemology in particular, this book is a "must read"; put it at the top of your to-do list. Even if your interest is much broader, and you are not intimidated by equations and scientific jargon, then you will enjoy this book greatly. It is extremely well-written, beautifully illustrated with concise line drawings, and best of all, it explores an astonishingly wide range of topics in both science and philosophy. To give you some idea of its breadth, this book covers perception, genetics, time, cognition, causality, number theory, evolution, computability, paradoxes, relativity, quantum mechanics, mind/brain duality, logic and artificial intelligence, and discusses what all of this has to say about how we know anything; that is, epistemology. It's a stunning synthesis.
One of the central tenets of this book, which impinges forcefully on epistemology, is summed up nicely beginning on page 117: "...the empiricist argument that knowledge about the world can enter the mind only through experience is valid if we consider only the ontogenetic development of man, from fertilized human egg to adult person. But once we also take into account the phylogenic development of the human brain through evolutionary history, it becomes clear that persons can know something of the world innately, prior to and independent of their experience."
In essence, Delbruck argues that we acquire knowledge not only through direct interaction, during development onward, but also through the accumulated experience of our ancestors, handed down by way of our genes, which have been shaped by eons of previous experience. The distinction between "ontogenetic" learning and "phylogenetic" learning is revisited many times in the book and explored in great depth, both philosophically and scientifically. As a biologist, Delbruck is not content to simply assert that something happened; he wants to understand the mechanisms. Delbruck offers many deep insights: "What is learned phylogenetically is not how to enter the world with ready-made adaptive concepts but how to have the brain so interact with the world before, during, and after birth that is certain to develop adaptive rather than maladaptive categories of thought."
This is an outstanding book. Be warned, however, that it is not an easy read. It is not science-made-palatable. Rather, it is a carefully argued synthesis of wide-ranging scientific knowledge, and an exploration of the philosophical implications. If you are prepared to think hard, this book will reward you.

About the Author
A native Californian, Gerald W. McFarland received his doctorate in U.S. history from Columbia University (1965) and taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for forty-four years. During that time he published four books in his field. He received many honors, including a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship; the Colonial Dames of America cited his book, A Scattered People: An American Family Moves West, as one of the three best books in American history published in 1985. He and his wife live in rural Western Massachusetts.

Relaxed Wanderer

Carlos, the relaxed wanderer in this novel, grabbed me at the outset with his musings in utero.
The book has important historical settings in American history and the main character is like a Latino Quain Qi Caine from the old 60's tv series : Kung Fu. That is, a wanderer and seeker learning to be fully human.
His "good ventures" meanders for example into memorable lines from his teacher: "The lack of awareness is the enemy of wisdom".
The appearance of a simple story occurring to a simple man unfolds layers like southwest geology...geology of the soul of a man struggling to do right with power that is within him (as a re-incarnated brujo) and power without...as an entitled Spanaird in Santa Fe in the early 1700's. Yet, just like southwest geology, nothing is as it appears. An ocean is now a desert....a Spanish nobleman is actually a brujo just recovering memories of his former lives.
Once you imagine the story to be predictable, twists of encounters beguile the mind.
It is well written, well edited...my only critique is that it is a tad too long, yet, as Carlos hears: "A brujo must be stubborn to the point of insane in his pursuit of mastery".
Will Carlos actually activate his teachings in a wise and learned way?
Will he choose the "easy path" of human entanglement? Or, carry on the long journey towards inner mastery?
The blend of mysticism, romanticism and a dash of modern sensibility combine for a good read....and hopefully we will find out these answers in the next volume.

Action, adventure, and romance beckon in The Brujo's Way

Part rousing adventure story, part voyage of self-discovery, "The Brujo's Way" leads the reader into the territory of 17th century New Mexico. A young brujo (sorcerer), Don Carlos must relearn the truth about himself and decide whether to become the benign sorcerer that he is destined to be. His series of adventures leads to an awakening of his old powers, forgotten since his sixth life began. He is tempted to follow a life of pleasure rather than dedication to the brujo's way, and this brings a deeper level of meaning to the novel. Many fascinating characters cross Don Carlos' path, helping to remind him of his old life. The story is exciting and is set up perfectly to leave the reader eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Enchanting!

_The Brujo's Way_ is masterful in so many ways. Mr. McFarland captures the grace and dignity of 18th century Mexican culture, and weaves an intriguing adventure within the many layers of Don Carlos' journey of self-discovery. A must-read for anyone who has ever been enchanted with Old and/or New Mexico. The exquisite writing carries the reader along effortlessly into a nuanced exploration of the interplay between this Brujo's life and the ancient spirituality that permeates his being. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Wrong mileage

I used this book for my travel to Saudi Arabia following the footsteps of Nassir Khusraw, the Persian poet and philosopher who went to Mecca in 1045. According to this book the distance between Medina to Jeddah and Mecca is 390 and 410, respectively. Nassir Khusraw in his "Safarnameh" says the distance between Medina and Mecca is 100 Farsang (about 600 kilometer). I was wondering why he overstimates the distance. In my book, then I added a paragraph explaining the reasons and theorizing that he might have travelled a longer route, due to dangers on the road and search for water. He was always correct in his estimation of the distance between many cities he travelled. Then I found out about MSN Encarta World Atlas. I typed the name of these cities and found out the distance was 629 and 605 kilometer, respectively.

Well done Nassir Khusraw a millenium ago! and Mr. Robison, correct this big mistake as soon as possible. The book has little practical use as far as Mecca and Medina is concerned

Very practical, essential reference

This is an essential reference for any tourist, traveller or expatriate relocating to the Arab Gulf states.
The book's information and advice enable a new-comer to develop a sense for local atmospherics and sensitivities so one adapt, integrate and thrive in the host country culture and in the supportive expatriate communities.
Good coverage of cultural, commercial and logistical (i.e., "Where can I find...?") details.
Highly recommended. Written with imagination, humor, and attention to detail.
FWIW, the earlier (1993) edition of this book I used when I was in the United Arab Emirates and Oman in 1995 was 100% accurate. The maps and guides to local services in the smaller cities were exceptionally helpful.
An impressively well-researched and high-quality work, as is typical of Lonely Planet Press titles.

Worked well for me

Having just returned from a 5 week trip through Oman, UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain I can say that Lonely Planet has again produced an accurate and useful guide. And despite the fact that it is several years old, prices and descriptions were still right. The guide's advice to try to get to the Musandem Peninsula in Oman was a fine piece of advice--it is amazingly beautiful.
And to the person who gave one star to this guide because of it's reference to the "Arabian Gulf": relax. If you say "Persian Gulf" to anyone in the Arab Gulf states they will have no idea what body of water you are talking about. I suppose you would be equally upset if 25 years ago a guidebook to China refered to the capital as "Beijing" instead of the Western imposed name "Peking"?

For any one who appreciates Martial Arts or knives in general. Jeff Imada's 1st book 'The Balisong Manual' gave you a guide into the art of Balisong Knife history, care and treatment, Balisong and the Law, carrying, knife safety, the grip, striking areas, manipulating the Balisong (holds, defense/offesive use, opening and closing flips) and self defense. For those that have seen them in action, it's akin to watching Bruce Lee with nunchaku. Jeff Imada second book 'The Advanced Balisong manual' goes onto more detail than his 1st book. More advanced and usually more impressive open and closing flips including detailed action photographs, pocket knife openings, more manipulations grip-changes self-defense and holds, as well as referbishing the Balisong and belt sheaths. Some people think a knife is a knife is a knife... not so, some knives have function others usability and others beauty. Jeff Imada has included a catalog of Balisong knives in this manual which cover all these. Also note that Balisong knives are illegal in many states and countries. Why I don't understand... many knives available today are more dangerous... and in my opinion boring. When was the last time you 'Really' played with a knife? You either take it out look at it, show your friends the craftsmanship, then put it away, or you relive your John Wayne dreams for a fast draw and open you blade as fast as you can. Yeeehaaa!

Ball games Ball games were very popular among the settlers. Most of the balls used for pioneer games were made of wood, cork or stuffed leather. They were very heavy and did not bounce. The first bouncing balls were made from bull bladders that were filled with air and covered with leather. These balls were hard, however, so any contact with the body was painful. In 1839, toymakers began using rubber to make softer, bouncier balls for children's games such as Dodge Ball.

Short and simple

There are only 22 pages of games--in large text with plenty of pictures--and I already know more than half of them. I was hoping for a treasury of new ideas. The games include hide-and-seek, leapfrog, hopscotch, baseball, dodgeball, hockey, cat's cradle, I spy, three-legged race, kick the can, egg-in-spoon race, etc. "Toboganning" (yep, riding a sled) was written up as game. Still, there are some new ones I might use: the snowy "Fox and Geese" variation on tag, "Hot Buttered Beans", and a few hoop & stick and marble games.

I really like this workbook. I'm not a workbook fan, by any means, but my kids need lots of extra practice this year and it was nice to find something that is common core aligned, since that's what my administration wants. I put together math packets for the kids using this book and when they finish their classwork early they work on their packets. The activities are fun (some coloring, some puzzles, etc. mixed in with straight practice pages) so the kids actually look forward to doing them.

Been There...Done That

This book gives an fairly impartial yet Western view of modern Iran. I can see how some Iranians would criticize it, but my wife who is Iranian and me (an American) spent 4 weeks traveling in Iran in March 2000 found this book to be useful before, during, and after the trip. We never encountered any anti-American or anti-West attitudes during our trip, in fact just the opposite. Sure there aren't the nightclubs or other forms of 'entertainment' that you find in the west, like Paul mentions but for us this became an opportunity to do other things. They don't roll up the streets at dark, far from it. The coffee shops, resturants, stores, and bazaars in many cities are open quite late with many people shopping, having a meal or a chat. My wife said it was much better there than her last trip in 1996. I had a great time! If you're planning a trip to Iran (even if you're Iranian) get this book (my wife enjoyed it too).

This book was not objective and had nothing positive to say about the country. It was somewhat mean spirited and had a plethora of stereotypical information.

Wonderful (and only) guide to Iran

I don't know what book some of these people were reading, as this book is in no way biased against Iran. It is quite the opposite. Covers main cities like Tehran and goes way off the beaten track to little villages near the Afghani border. Gives great info on Iranian culture and shows that Iran is really no where near as intimidating to westerners as many think.
