Don Carlos Buenaventura, a powerful brujo in his sixth life, practices a benign form of sorcery based on his motto ''Do no harm.'' His great powers derive from intensive training in heightened awareness akin to Eastern yogic disciplines rather than from incantations, spells, or aid from demon allies. He is accidentally born in 1684 into an aristocratic Catholic family in Mexico City, a social and religious milieu in which his identity as a brujo, if known, would put him in mortal danger. In repressing any sign that he is other than an ordinary young man, he forgets both his brujo powers and who he really is. Exiled at nineteen to the remote frontier town of Santa Fe, New Mexico, he is exposed during the journey northward to wild desert landscapes that awaken his forgotten powers. In Santa Fe he resumes his conventional persona to protect what he now recognizes is his true identity and is caught in the tension of trying to live two lives. An arduous return trip to Mexico City and back further intensifies his brujo powers, leading to many adventures, including dangerous encounters with an evil sorcerer, an Apache war party, and a woman devotee of an ancient Aztec goddess, and also stimulates his recall, in dreams, of his brujo training in past lives. A chance meeting in Mexico City with a woman trained in Tantric spirituality is life-changing, opening him to other dimensions of consciousness. Returning to Santa Fe, he faces the task of learning to unite his Brujo's Way with his new spiritual path.

Review
''McFarland's work is enchanting in subject matter and in tone. He creates memorable characters, including active female protagonists. That's not easy while being true to the machismo paternalistic ethos of New Spain. McFarland also takes us inside the mindset and magical battles of brujos, which is to say he gives us glimpses of belief systems unfamiliar to most readers. ... a page-turner ... Who can resist a book whose elements include magic, sex, violence, the peril-filled beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert, and a journey to find destiny, virtue, and honor?'' --Rob Weir, Off-Center Views, June 26, 2014

Relaxed Wanderer
By terri nash
Carlos, the relaxed wanderer in this novel, grabbed me at the outset with his musings in utero.
The book has important historical settings in American history and the main character is like a Latino Quain Qi Caine from the old 60's tv series : Kung Fu. That is, a wanderer and seeker learning to be fully human.
His "good ventures" meanders for example into memorable lines from his teacher: "The lack of awareness is the enemy of wisdom".
The appearance of a simple story occurring to a simple man unfolds layers like southwest geology...geology of the soul of a man struggling to do right with power that is within him (as a re-incarnated brujo) and power without...as an entitled Spanaird in Santa Fe in the early 1700's. Yet, just like southwest geology, nothing is as it appears. An ocean is now a desert....a Spanish nobleman is actually a brujo just recovering memories of his former lives.
Once you imagine the story to be predictable, twists of encounters beguile the mind.
It is well written, well edited...my only critique is that it is a tad too long, yet, as Carlos hears: "A brujo must be stubborn to the point of insane in his pursuit of mastery".
Will Carlos actually activate his teachings in a wise and learned way?
Will he choose the "easy path" of human entanglement? Or, carry on the long journey towards inner mastery?
The blend of mysticism, romanticism and a dash of modern sensibility combine for a good read....and hopefully we will find out these answers in the next volume.

Action, adventure, and romance beckon in The Brujo's Way
By Bill T.
Part rousing adventure story, part voyage of self-discovery, "The Brujo's Way" leads the reader into the territory of 17th century New Mexico. A young brujo (sorcerer), Don Carlos must relearn the truth about himself and decide whether to become the benign sorcerer that he is destined to be. His series of adventures leads to an awakening of his old powers, forgotten since his sixth life began. He is tempted to follow a life of pleasure rather than dedication to the brujo's way, and this brings a deeper level of meaning to the novel. Many fascinating characters cross Don Carlos' path, helping to remind him of his old life. The story is exciting and is set up perfectly to leave the reader eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Enchanting!
By Louis Paparazzo
_The Brujo's Way_ is masterful in so many ways. Mr. McFarland captures the grace and dignity of 18th century Mexican culture, and weaves an intriguing adventure within the many layers of Don Carlos' journey of self-discovery. A must-read for anyone who has ever been enchanted with Old and/or New Mexico. The exquisite writing carries the reader along effortlessly into a nuanced exploration of the interplay between this Brujo's life and the ancient spirituality that permeates his being. I look forward to the next book in this series.
