Henry Lafayette Dodge has long been a familiar name in 19th century American Southwestern history. As one of the earliest and most effective Indian agents to the Navajo, he has been portrayed as a congenial, sympathetic and compassionate advocate for the tribe--a veritable role model. The Navajo knew him as Red Shirt, a man they came to respect, appreciate and trust. Those who knew Dodge admitted, although often grudgingly, that he had unrivaled influence over the tribe. By today's sensibilities, Henry L. Dodge was hardly a role model. In his youth, he was irresponsible, hot-headed and violent. As an adult, he was sued for assault and battery, land fraud, breach of promises and misuse of public funds. He apparently couldn't be trusted with money, his own or others'. Finally brought down by scandal, he fled Wisconsin in the dead of night, abandoning his career, his wife and his children, leaving them nearly destitute. How then should history assess him? Honestly: precisely as he was, an ambitious and imperfect man. The honest telling gives a straightforward account of not only Henry L. Dodge, but what became the veritable mythology of the West, from the bawdy old French Missouri river towns to the raucous lead mining districts of southwest Wisconsin, through the slaughter of the Winnebago and Black Hawk wars to the invasion of New Mexico and the chaos of the Indian frontier; it is a gritty personal tale of the true West.

About the Author
Lawrence D. Sundberg was born on June 19, 1952. From an early age he was fascinated with the peoples, lands and cultures of Arizona and New Mexico. After earning a BA in Anthropology and elementary teacher certification, he taught fourth and fifth grades on the Navajo reservation for eighteen years, during which time he wrote Dinetah, An Early History of the Navajo People, published by Sunstone Press of Santa Fe. He presently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and teaches English as a Second Language to adult refugees and immigrants for Catholic Charities of New Mexico.

Good History!

I am a graduate student in history and first came across Henry L. Dodge's name a couple of years ago while researching a paper on "The Long Walk" of the Navajo. His story intrigued me, and a footnote in Frank McNitt's "Navajo Wars", sent me looking into Henry L.'s past and in fact I had even hoped this would be my master's thesis. But alas I learned Mr Sundberg had beaten me to it. I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this book for a year, but at the same time hoping it would not be published, at least not until after I had finished my own thesis paper based on these events.
This is an edited review, my first posting coming after having only read the preview. Unfortunately Mr. Sundberg, nor his publisher were in the Christmas spirit, or maybe didn't read my review, but at any rate I had to fork out full retail for my copy, by way of my good friend Phil Myers at "The Bookstore" in downtown Moberly, Mo. The friendliest book seller you'll ever run across.
As to the book itself, Mr Sundberg has presented in fine journeyman style the account of a very interesting man from our past. As he notes, Henry L. was by no means perfect, few men are. But he was however without a doubt, for a few short years, one of the greatest friends and advocates the Navajo people could ever have asked for. This book tells far more then simply Henry L. Dodge's story however, it also gives some insight into what was truly one of the more interesting and influential families in the history of the early Midwest as well. The prose is very readable for all levels from the causal history reader on up, although as a scholar I was somewhat disappointed that an "Index" was not included, which I assume was a economic call. Still at $30 for a paperback edition, one would think there would be an Index in the back. The book is very well researched however with an impressive bibliography citing a very large number of sources which I have also personally tracked down and perused and thus I can vouch completely for the correctness of the narrative. However I feel I must qualify that by adding that I have only had time to do little more then skim through the highlights and have not yet had time to really read it all closely.
If you are interested in the history of the Midwest and the Southwest and like a true story with a few spicy tidbits of 19th century dirt intermixed with some rousing adventure this is worth your time. I think you will find the story as interesting as I did.
