An Engaging Primer

This is an excellent first read on permaculture. It covers nearly all the bases that Mollison's intro does (the daddy of the discipline) but brings the somewhat heady concepts down to a tangible, 'here's how you can do it' level. One of the things that I liked so much about this book is that the author doesn't assume (like many PC writings seem to do) that you live way out in the bush somewhere, with acres and acres to work with, no infrastructure, no other job, and heaps of people working alongside you. She has ideas for those folks, but also for the rest of us who maybe have a small yard, a deserted lot, a community garden space, or just a stoop and a lot of creativity. this is a good book. I recomend it highly.

Great starting place

We bought this book because we had heard bits of information about permaculture and we didn't want to spend heaps of money learning about something which might not interest us.
Earth User's Guide to Permaculture has inspired us to get into permaculture in a big way. The information presented gives enough in the way of ideas to get the brain ticking over and to think how it can be applied in your own situation. We will buy another, more detailed book than this one, but this was perfect as an introduction to permaculture and to guide us in the direction we need to go.
I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in permaculture who isn't sure if it's for them. There's enough to get you thinking and to let you know if permaculture is for you.

LOVED this book...first saw it at the exhibition called Maharajahs in Chicago in October at the Museum of Natural History....
Only disappointment of the book was that it did not have maps of each location....I kept wanting to refer to where each wonderful fort or palace was. Otherwise, if you love India, this is great. Gwen Johnson

A FASCINATING BOOK ABOUT AN OFT NEGLECTED SUBJECT

Mighty Maharajas covers the forts and palaces of India over a period of more than a 1000 years beginning in the 10th century AD. The book is divided into 11 sections each of which either deals with a specific type or locale for the various forts or palaces under discussion. From Ancient Forts to Colonial Settlers, MM illustrates the opulence of Indian palaces and forts in breathtaking color. These are a far cry from the Medieval fortresses of Europe or the "outpost fortresses" of the Roman Empire or the American West. The magnificence of art and architecture are wedded to the functional necessities of forts and palaces; and no two are alike. The sheer size of so many makes Versailles look like a glorified cottage (except for its splendiferous gardens). The forts and palaces appear to be more like small cities and only serve to highlight and emphasize the enormous chasm that existed (and still exists) between those who ruled in India and those who were ruled. It's no wonder that India was considered to be the "jewel in the crown" of the British Empire. That being said, this is a most worthwhile book to own for anyone interested in this aspect of Indian architecture and culture. A copy in very good condition would not be beyond one's purse strings.

How the Moderates Were Hijacked

I have just read half of the book, but it provides looks into the sequence of events during which the "moderate" Southern Baptists attempted to comprehend, and then to resist the take-over of the fundamentalists, beginning in 1978, and pretty much ceasing in the late 1980s. It is one side of the controversy, but it is written with pathos and meticulous detail.

I was expecting more than a book of cute blacklines. The title led me to believe that there would be ideas based on the Common Core Mathematical Practices. I was hoping for a book that would captivate, motivate, and develop these skills not just be a practice book.
