Too bland.

Stefano has some amazing art, and I am a fan of his style. However, the content in this book is a bit disappointing when it comes to this kind of art. Basically most of it is pictures such as the girl on the cover...on one side it has her looking normal, and the other it has her with her bra or panties missing, sometimes both. Because of this it looks really odd because she appears to be fully clothed except it's like he forgot to draw her bra or panties on...it just doesn't look right. Later in the book he adds sketches that add a little more to the otherwise bland book. Also, like some other books I bought from this publisher, it is freakishly short, hence the cheap price of it over Amazon. If you like the art style from the cover, it might be worth looking into if you've never seen his art. But ultimately this book was a bit disappointing because it didn't really deliver...you're likely to flip through it once, be disappointed, and then put it back down and never touch it again.

An inhabitant of queenly Alexandria or imperial Rome, could we reincarnate one, would need time to adjust to the physical surroundings created by modern technology, but in the world of the mind or the spirit he would find much to make him feel right at home.

"Gallup Poll Indicates 32 Million Believe in Astrology" reads a headline in The New York Times of October 19, 1975. In other words, twenty-two per cent of the adult population of the United States "believe that stars influence people's lives and foretell events." . . . Antiquity too had its astrologers, prophets, soothsayers, fetishists, nostrum peddlers and believers. Then as now, the divine will or message was thought to be vouchsafed to humans in a variety of ways and forms. A favorite vehicle was the dream - "a dream too comes from Zeus," remarks Homer early in the first book of the Iliad -and throughout antiquity, from Pharonic times to Christian, the divine origin and message-bearing content of dreams are part of common belief. Extant works on the subject include short treatises by Aristotle and a lengthy Interpretation of Dreams, in five books, compiled in the second century A.D. by Artemidoros of Daldis in Asia Minor. At 2:21 am on September 8, 1896, authorities in Nova Scotia killed an innocent man. Peter Wheeler — a "coloured" man accused of murdering a white girl — was strung up with a slipknot noose. The hanging was state-sanctioned but it was a lynching all the same. Now, a re-examination of his case using modern forensic science reveals one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in Canadian history.

On the night of January 27, 1896, 14-year-old Annie Kempton found herself home alone in the picturesque village of Bear River, Nova Scotia. She did not live to see the morning. Shortly after midnight, Annie was assaulted and bludgeoned with a piece of firewood. Her killer slit her throat three times with a kitchen knife then coldly sat and ate a jar of homemade jam before fleeing into the night. The senseless and brutal slaying devastated the town and plunged her parents into a near-suicidal abyss of guilt and grief. At trial, the prosecution's case focused on the inconsistencies in Wheeler's statements, the testimony of two children who placed Peter near the house on the night in question, and the detective's novel analysis of the physical evidence.

It was one of the first trials in Canada to use forensic science, albeit poorly. Wheeler's defense team called no witnesses and did little to challenge the evidence presented. The jury deliberated less than two hours before declaring Peter Wheeler guilty of murder.

The trial itself was a media sensation; every word was front page news. Several papers each ran their own version of "Wheeler's confession," an admission of guilt supposedly authored by the condemned man. Each rendition tried and failed to make sense of the conflicting timeline. With every new iteration, it became clearer that the case against Wheeler was not as airtight as the detective in charge, Nick Power, and the media had proclaimed.

The Lynching of Peter Wheeler is a story of one town's rush to judgment. It is a tale of bigotry and incompetence, arrogance and pseudoscience, fear and misguided vengeance. It is a case study in media distortion, illustrating how the print media can manipulate the truth, destroy reputations, and so thoroughly taint a jury pool, that the notion of a fair trial becomes a statistical impossibility. At the height of the Victorian era, the media created a super villain in the mold of Jack the Ripper, the perfect foil for its other creation, super-sleuth Nick Power. The masterfully constructed narrative was perfect, save for one glaring detail: Peter Wheeler did not kill Annie Kempton.

In the winter of 1896, young Annie Kempton was brutally murdered. Throat slashed, face beaten, she bled to death on the floor of her family home in Bear River, Nova Scotia.

An entire community and a salacious media rose and pointed their finger at one man: Peter Wheeler. According to the newspapers of the day, not only had Peter Wheeler killed Annie Kempton, he had also committed the unforgivable sin of being dark-skinned and foreign-born, a hired hand who had never learned his place. Thanks to a Halifax detective, the self-proclaimed Sherlock Holmes of the Maritimes, Wheeler was strung up in the dead of night.

The case was among the first in Canada to introduce forensic science into a courtroom. In a riveting, fast-paced narrative, Komar re-examines the evidence using modern techniques and reveals how Peter Wheeler was the victim of a state-sanctioned lynching, executed for a crime he did not commit.

In the winter of 1896, young Annie Kempton was brutally murdered. Throat slashed, face beaten, she bled to death on the floor of her family home in Bear River, Nova Scotia.

An entire community and a salacious media rose and pointed their finger at one man: Peter Wheeler. According to the newspapers of the day, not only had Peter Wheeler killed Annie Kempton, he had also committed the unforgivable sin of being dark-skinned and foreign-born, a hired hand who had never learned his place. Thanks to a Halifax detective, the self-proclaimed Sherlock Holmes of the Maritimes, Wheeler was strung up in the dead of night.

The case was among the first in Canada to introduce forensic science into a courtroom. In a riveting, fast-paced narrative, Komar re-examines the evidence using modern techniques and reveals how Peter Wheeler was the victim of a state-sanctioned lynching, executed for a crime he did not commit.

Very Interesting Tale

A fascinating tale of times in early Nova Scotia and a revealing look at the social morals and justice of the period, although I found Komar's accounting somewhat slanted and appeared to be highly influenced by the press accounts of the trial, it was still a good read and well worth the purchase price.

Rare Perspective, Rare Intellect, Raw History

Here one sees through the young eyes of an Old South, a dutiful, idealistic view of a war for liberty. This is a kinetoscope of a young father walking to join his Army, to wait and get by for for duty, assignment, battle. Far from a teenage bride and toddling son, his heart vividly aches for them. These letters will grab you, as no twist of plot or vivid verbiage could.

The steady voice of these letters is no elite, but writes exquisitely well. He is loyal to home, Georgia and country, issued flour, bacon and chaw, plus a few but proud confederate dollars a week. Void of any story line but fate, this is a narration of civil war marbled with advice on crops, claims on Ma's hog kill, and pleadings for "long letters back".

Against the grey drape of war, a private from central Georgia colors in the scenes and themes of a soldier's life for his family back home. The editors' generous annotations enhance the imagery to High Def, if not 3-D.

You will never regret reading this book, though you've always known how the story ends.

A TOUCHING PERSONAL INSIGHT INTO LIFE DURING THE WAR.

THE MORE I READ OF THIS BOOK, THE HARDER IT BECAME TO PUT IT DOWN. I FELT A PART OF THE WRITER'S EXPERIENCES, FRUSTRATIONS AND LONGINGS. READING A BOOK LIKE THIS PUTS ME INTO THE LIVES BEING DESCRIBED AND EXPOSES ME TO THE HEARTBREAK THEREIN. VERY TOUCHING AND ONE THAT I WILL READ AGAIN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE SUFFERINGS OF MARION AND AMANDA AND THEIR FAMILIES.

My great-grandfather fought along-side Marion Hill Fitzpatrick as a member of the 49th Georgia, a sister regiment of Thomas' Brigade. This book gave me a very personal, heart-wrenching insight into not only what these men went through, but also the daily ordeals of surviving of their families back home. My thanks to the the folks who produced this wonderful work.

And yesteryear, as the second great awakening was taking place, the South was preparing for Civil War to keep their slaves. You would’ve thought that Bible thumping, hot under the collar preachers of God, would have stood up and railed against such barbarism, willing to die the martyr’s death for the truth of what the Scripture taught, – but no, no not, they joined them! And so we had denominations who split North and South. Personally, I had been searching for a biblical hero who fought and died against slavery in the South, when I discovered Richard Furman who in early life was opposed to slavery, came into possession of slaves, and then took the stand to keep slaves, and from his warped biblical perspective, wrote a book. I guess he never read the passages, “it is for freedom that Christ has set us free” or “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”! Or how about the novel idea that the slave was a kidnapped person in need of his sympathy and help! Get alone with God and come out from such people who form organizations to fulfill their own agenda.Make your quest to love and know God above all else and then speak that love to your neighbor.
