Having taught large lecture courses and seminars on dreams, daydreams and consciousness at Yale University for 25 years, it is a pleasure to recommend Prof. Lewis' stunning compilation of ancient cultures' references to dreams. I have regularly used this book at the outset of my courses and students are entertained and enlightened by what they find. This is a work of great scholarship presented in an accessible and didactically useful form. -- Jerome L. Singer, Ph.D., Yale University
In less than 200 pages the author has supplied an excellent overview of the major part of the wide range of ancient prophetic activities, and we should be grateful to him for these stimulating selections. -- The Journal of Indo-European Studies, Volume 26, Number 1 & 2, Spring/Summer 1998
Lewis makes available for general consumption...a set of excerpts, from divination and omens, astrology and horoscopes, covering a total period of some 2,500 years. -- E. K. Borthwick, The Classical Review
Lewis' book illustrates, in well-chosen excerpts, almost all ancient types of prophecy; in addition to dreams, omens, prodigies and horoscopes are given a brief coverage. It also includes ancient discussions of these subjects (Aristotle, Lucretius, Cicero, Plutarch, Macroius) as well as material from ancient cultures other than Greek and Roman. The result is a remarkable presentation, in just over 150 pages, of almost the whole range of ancient prophetic activity and the philosophical reaction to it. --Bernard Knox, The Classical World

From the Publisher
Man's efforts to explain the act of dreaming and to interpret or rationalize its visual content are almost as old as history itself. Lewis' Dreams and Portents is the first collection to bring together a representative variety of ancient world sources of dream interpretation, divination, and astrology featuring: - Dreams and Their Interpretations including: The Egyptian Dream Book, The Babylonian-Assyrian Dream Book, Ancient Greek and Roman Literary Allusions, Early Christian Interpretations, A Christian Dream Book - Divinations, Omens, and Prodigies - Astrology, or The Stars and Their Influence - New foreword to the 1996 edition
From the Author
"The appeal of the occult, the grip of the irrational, all manner of superstitions pervade the literature and other survivals of ancient times. An inhabitant of queenly Alexandria or imperial Rome, could we reincarnate one, would need time to adjust to the physical surroundings created by modern technology, but in the world of the mind or the spirit he would find much to make him feel right at home.
"Gallup Poll Indicates 32 Million Believe in Astrology" reads a headline in The New York Times of October 19, 1975. In other words, twenty-two per cent of the adult population of the United States "believe that stars influence people's lives and foretell events." . . . Antiquity too had its astrologers, prophets, soothsayers, fetishists, nostrum peddlers and believers. Then as now, the divine will or message was thought to be vouchsafed to humans in a variety of ways and forms. A favorite vehicle was the dream - "a dream too comes from Zeus," remarks Homer early in the first book of the Iliad -and throughout antiquity, from Pharonic times to Christian, the divine origin and message-bearing content of dreams are part of common belief. Extant works on the subject include short treatises by Aristotle and a lengthy Interpretation of Dreams, in five books, compiled in the second century A.D. by Artemidoros of Daldis in Asia Minor. Selections from these are included in the present volume." From the Author's Preface.
