Decent demonstration of the form
By Joseph M Burtner
This book seemed more geared towards learning a form, and introducing the "Five Animals" principles, than presenting an entire art. However, the form itself is fairly complex, as it is in essence five different forms strung togeather in a logical manner. The first chapter is just a couple of pages long, giving a brief history on developement of Chinese fighting specific to the animals style. The following five chapters detail the five animals one by one: the dragon, tiger, snake, crane, and leopard, with no apparent order. Those chapters cover the physical and mental/spiritual/psychological characteristics of the different styles. Then there is a short chapter on the stages of learning the form, and finally a chapter showing the complete form. I'd say that this part was pretty easy to follow, with the main problems being that some possitions were only shown from behind. Each photo has text describing it's actions underneath it. It is an eye-opening and physically challenging form, and is great at least for developing ballance and endurence. The last chapter shows applications of some of the movements. All in all, I'd say that someone with a background in most striking arts ought to be able to grasp what's going on. The chapter on the form itself is the meat of the text, with the rest of the book being a good intro into the Five Animals form, but nothing extrordinary stands out to me.

Good book, but Seriously Uneven Muscle Development
By A Customer
I am a black belt in Kempo, and TKD with an Instructor Sash in Kung Fu who learned the whole form as best as I could from just using the book. I found it clear and easy to follow. It took a couple of months to learn, after which I ordered Doc-Fai Wong's instructional video on the same 5 animal form later. I found that I'd done a fairly decent job on learning the form by book. I'd missed about 10% of it, which were mostly circling movements transitioning from one step to the other. One problem I had, which eventually led me to discontinue practicing the form is that it's seriously unbalanced. If you practice it regularly, you will have very uneven muscle development, especially in your legs. There is a big stress on jumps and standing on one leg using your right only. To alleviate this problem, you'd have to learn how to do the whole form with the opposite side and if you are just starting, it could easily take you half a year to learn this extremely long form both ways. Once you do learn it, it'll take you about 12-14 minutes to practice it just once on each side. To become really proficient at learning a martial art form, you should practice it several times each session. For a form such as this one, you would need a significant time committment to practice enough to do it justice. If you like to train in other ways such as running, weights, other martial arts, etc., be prepared to commit a lot of time.

Good base to learn the shaolin five animals set
By A Customer
Many books do not display this set. As a martial artist, you have to use your imagination along with your basic training to gain some understanding of this specific set. As indicated in the first chapter of the book, each animal has different characteristic in which the martial artist must tap into (the essence). Once that is understood and you incorporate the proper training for each animal, then you start to study the set. Though the descriptions are very brief and shallow, the martial artist must get a feel for the set. To achieve that you must practice the set by breaking it down section by section and memorizing it (along with proper training). Only then you can become successful.
One the book, the author needed to give an example and an in-depth description after each section. But what do you expect for the price.

Of Earthly and River Things: An Angler's Memoir, by Wayne Curtis

"One could do worse than to grow up on a river."

In his new collection of essays, Wayne Curtis voyages back through the tributaries of his past, throwing a pastoral net over the backwaters of his childhood to ensnare the sepia-tinged moments of love, loss, and life lessons he gleaned through his rise to maturity on the waterways of New Brunswick. As Proust recalled his past through the delicate taste of a madeleine, so, too, Curtis ruminates on growing up on the Miramichi, albeit through the more uniquely Canadian flavour of the home-cooked doughnut. Curtis writes of the simple pleasures of fishing with friends, of one's first unforgettable kiss, and of a father who teased his children that "all dreams that were told before breakfast had a better chance of becoming real."

Of Earthly and River Things is at once a nostalgic trek through history and elegy for a vanishing culture, a world where its people were grateful to the river for its bounty.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-Three superficially attractive series entries. A Child's Day is about "early settler children" who belong to a fictional farm family, but there is no precise definition of the time or place. The book is illustrated with full-color photographs of the two featured children and sometimes poorly drawn imitations of 19th-century engravings. The captions are sometimes in the present and sometimes in the past tense. The story takes readers through a day of chores, fun and games, getting dressed, visiting peddlers, a fair, and going to school. Sidebars include recipes and a morality tale from a third-grade primer. Fort Life is completely factual, beginning with earliest American defenses. Aspects of the life of the soldiers are described and almost all of the illustrations are photographs taken at restored historical sites. However, the discussion is not strictly chronological and one must consult the photo credits to identify such places as Fort Laramie and Colonial Williamsburg. A One-Room School describes the physical plan, supplies, routines, and rules of schools from an unspecified historic period of rural American history. In the middle of the facts, a two-page story of "John's" trip to school and another about "Amanda" being locked in the building are included as if part of the same exposition. Kalman's "Early Settler Life" series (Crabtree), and Kate Waters's Sarah Morton's Day (1991) and Samuel Eaton's Day (1993, both Scholastic) are better treatments of historical American life.

From Publishers Weekly
How to come up with yet more laudatory adjectives to describe the continuing excellence and inventiveness of America's premier philosopher of food? If the sustained historical reckonings of Thorne's last book, the ambitious Serious Pig, overwhelmed some readers, this one will gladden the hearts of fans of the looser IACP/Julia Child Award-winning Outlaw Cook. Thorne, who has relocated from the northerly reaches of Maine to Northampton, Mass., here abandons his forages into dour Puritan food culture and throws himself joyfully into the pursuit of, among other things, the perfect pizza, the ideal savory breakfast and the quintessential Vietnamese sandwich. As usual, Thorne's exploratory approach to cooking leads to the debunking of much conventional wisdom. He discovers, for example, that risotto, theoretically a finicky dish, is in fact simple and forgiving; that homemade bread, so often coveted in its fresh-baked state, is perhaps more breadlike two days later. "Knowing Nothing about Wine" reveals more in 17 pages about wine drinking (and wine anxiety) in this country than any number of full-length books. Illuminating disquisitions on pot-cooks vs. knife-cooks, the Irish potato famine and the legacy of Richard Olney divert Thorne from practical experimentation, but he always ends up back in the kitchen. Such is his giftDthe ability to range back and forth from armchair to stove top, inspiring cooks and readers alike. (Nov. 14)

From Library Journal
Part memoir, part cookbook, part rambling discourse on why we cook things the way we do, the Thornes' (Serious Pig) new book is a change of pace from many recent cookbooks, which put too much stress on ingredients. The authors also emphasize ingredientsDfresh, seasonal, variedDbut in this book at least, technique is paramount. It is technique, they argue, that validates your cooking, that gives you the right to handle quality ingredients in the first place. Consequently, there are chapters on seemingly simple operations, such as boiling plain rice or making toast. Intriguing, insightful, and wide-ranging, this book can also be overly self-indulgent (offering, for example, a whole chapter on what John Thorne likes to eat for breakfast). This is not for the casual cookbook reader. But for people who like to ponder the deeper meaning of food and explore ever better ways of preparing it, there is much matter here. Recommended for larger public libraries and those with good culinary collections.DTom Cooper, Richmond Heights Memorial Lib., MO

Review
"Those familiar with Thorne's work will not be disappointed with Pot on the Fire; those new to it will experience the joy of prose that welcomes you to the hearth and invites you to stay....the effect of Thorne's gastronomic philosophy on his prose, from the remembrance of a first kitchen knife to the passage in which he peels an apple for his dying father, is to open up the reader's sense of time, so that each nuance and thought provides a doorway into the contemplation of a life well-savored."--Kyla Wazana, San Francisco Chronicle

"The Thornes will bring out the culinary adventurer in you, whether or not you ever leave home."--Sylvia Carter, Newsday

"With every collection [Thorne's] accounts ... make richer reading."--Corby Kummer, The New York Times Book Review

"John Thorne is the antidote to trendy food writing, a literate man who produces pleasurable, instructive, even profound prose, along with satisfying recipes."-Mark Bittman, The New York Times

Great Distinct Writing in a Distinguished Tradition
By B. Marold
Both currently available books, `Serious Pig' and `Pot on the Fire', by John Thorne and wife Matt Lewis Thorne, are composed of essays cut from the same culinary journalistic cloth, the authors' food letter `Simple Cooking'. These essays as bodies of work do not quite fit any established form of culinary writing. It is certainly not `The Best Recipe' genre followed by the magazine `Cooks Illustrated' and some writers, although there is some element of this point of view. It is not culinary history, since it is so distinctly done from the authors' point of view. There are some essays that taste like memoir or nostalgia, but these serve more as chapters used to set the scene for text dealing with the food. It is certainly not food science a la Shirley Corriher or Alton Brown, although Alton Brown does credit Thorne as one of his biggest influences. In a nutshell, the Thornes simply provide interesting writing about food.
I love intellectual connections, so I was delighted to discover that one of the wellsprings from which John Thorne draws his inspiration is the writing of Richard Olney. This ties up a string of influence from Elizabeth David to Olney to Thorne to Alton Brown, one of the most influential popular voices in culinary journalism. Olney is one of the most intellectual writers on culinary matters writing in English and available in the United States. And, it is clear not only in Thorne's `Simple Food' motto but also in his intellectual point of view that he owes much to Olney.
The first thing which changed my reading Thorne from simple pleasure to respect was his essay on the Italian Panzanella salad, which he describes in great detail and with great attention to what Italians really mean when they make this salad, a combination of tomato, stale bread, red onion, mozzarella, cucumber, basil, and salt and pepper. The subtle intellectual honesty that caught my attention was when Thorne created an adaptation using fresh bread and remained true to the original nomenclature by calling his invention Panzanetta salad. Contrast this to Alton Brown's borrowing the same Panzanella term and applying it to a twist on the BLT sandwich by adding bacon and forgetting the onion and garlic. Not Panzanella at all, I think. Not much to most people, but to a person schooled in the principle that language was something to be respected, I was impressed.
The second thing that caught my attention was the tale of how Thorne fell into the vocation of cooking and culinary journalism. Like so many things, and like myself, it was by accident and necessity. In Thorne's case, it was because he was a dropout with little money who needed to feed himself with as few dollars as possible. If this was the prime mover in his career path, a strong influence seems to be his Maine roots. More than one essay has the feel of Maine's Stephen King writing about food. Popular subjects are his old residences, Maine crops such as potatoes and blueberries, and Maine cuisine featuring the lobster and other seafood, and Maine restaurants. One of my favorite series of essays deals with the origin of chowder. I will never again respect a chowder recipe that does not include some potato or biscuit as a thickening agent. Maine does not monopolize the story. A long series of essays covers Cajun and Creole culinary topics from New Orleans. This is where he proposes the theory that a great cuisine such as the Cajun or Italian cuisine is based on emulating a memory of greatness. I think there is a germ of truth here, but I believe Paula Wolfert offers a much fuller picture in her Morocco book.
The third and most enduring attraction of Thorne's writing is that it is simply entertaining stuff. A writer could provide the recipes on these pages with no explanation or commentary and they would be good recipes, but the writing would be like the food with the salt and pepper left out. Similarly, the history / memoir / commentary would not be nearly as interesting without the instructions for preparing the dishes on which the essays expound. The very best example of a perfect mix of culinary technique with storytelling is the essay on `Perfect Rice'. It all starts with John Thorne's claiming that he makes a pretty good pot of rice, followed by a derisive response from Madame Thorne, who had studied the issue at some length before Sir John touched on the subject early in their joint lives. Thorne proceeds to relate the story of their mutual investigations into making perfect rice. In the process, we learn much about the world's rice varieties and why rices behave like it does. After seeing how much care one can devote to such a simple subject, I mentally demote people like Sara Moulton for posing as a teacher of culinary matters when they confesses to not being able to properly cook a pot of rice.
Both volumes are available in midpriced trade paperback editions with no pictures. It is a sure test of the fact that pictures are not necessary in works on cooking in that I never miss them. A really important addition to books of this type is a list of recipes in addition to the index and table of contents. Both volumes have this important tool. The most telling endorsement of these books is that I am sure I will read them again, cover to cover, and enjoy every minute of it.
A rare treat for foodie readers.

Another treasure by John and Matt Lewis Thorne
By Lawrence W. Prichard
This most recent compilation of John and Matt Lewis Thorne's Simple Cooking newsletter continues their intelligent, friendly, delicious writing about food and a real life. This book ends with "Last Gleaning," about the final illness of John's father, and the role food and eating played in their sometimes difficult relationship.John Thorne has been compared to MFK Fisher, and there is some validity to the comparison, to an extent. They both write very very good prose, and they both write about hunger other than the visceral. However, there are differences. At times, Fisher's writing seems exclusionary, and Thorne's never does.To clear up a point of potential confusion: "Matt" is a nickname for Martha. They are married. She acts as editor, and does add an occasional essay or aside. Her contributions make a good writer even better.

Still Delicious.
By NyiNya
"Our appetite should always be larger and more curious than our hunger, turned loose to wander the world's flesh at will. Perfection is as false an economy in cooking as it is in love, since, with carrots and potatoes as with lovers, the perfectly beautiful are all the same; the imperfect, different in their beauty, every one."

The quote is from John Thorne's essay "Perfect Food." Thorne is obviously not your average food writer, not the celebrity chef du jour penning his memoir plus recipes. He is first and foremost a writer. The food however, is also a star.

The Amazon blurb for "Pot on the Fire" uses a quote from Connosseur Magazine comparing John Thorne to Elizabeth David and M.F.K. Fisher. Good company, to be sure, but Mr. Thorne is way more fun than David, and even more entertaining than Fischer. I love Mary Francis, her references to a world that ended in the 1930s don't resonate today as they once did. She is certainly at the top of the pantheon, but Thorne speaks to us in the here and now.

For all his dry humor and low key style, Thorne (and his wife and writing partner Matt Lewis Thorne)is serious about food. In his previous book "Serious Pig," we learned that necessity was the mother of his inventiveness. He was a penniless college student, taking a hiatus from studies and living on the (very) cheap,at his grandfather's New England cabin. Back in those days, lobsters were there for the taking, and no red tides turned clams and mussels toxic. He learned how to cook what the ocean gave him for free, and what he could scrounge from the land. But he also learned how to buy and cook and appreciate other foods. His chapter on potatoes, for instance, is eye-opening. Who knew Maine grew so many varieties of spud? His essays on the lobster roll, blueberry pie, picked crab and the New England Diner will have you itching to take a drive up that coast. By the way, "Serious Pig" is not, despite the title, solely concerned with barbecue. It's a delightful compendium of food writing and the perfect intro to "Pot On the Fire."

"Pot" takes us further afield. We go on the prowl for the ultimate Bahn Mi, that iconic vietnamese sandwich consisting of a baguette stuffed with moist, rich slices ofpork and rich, unctuous pate, all slathered in a chili-spiked mayo and layered with cucumbers, crispy shallots, slices of pickled carrot and daikon, with cilantro and sometimes a splash of nuoc man. Knee-shaking good. He tells us about preparing perfect rice, finding the Ultimate Breakfast and the World's Best Cookies. We range from a potato-famished Ireland to the India of Colonel Blimp, checking out their influence on what we eat today.

This is a book to read, not a cookbook you take down from the shelf when you need a recipe or want to check out the right temp for roasting a pork loin. Like MFK, Thorne does tell us how to cook some things, but mostly he just whets your appetite for eating them. If you read in bed, as I do, by the time he gets around to describing a brothy, spicy, shellfish packed cioppino, you will have to tie your leg to the nightstand to keep from getting up, getting dressed and driving to San Francisco for a bowlful.

For a taste of John Thorne, you could visit his website. I'll provide the link in comments, since it is not permitted to do so in a review. If you haven't been there before, his listing of favorite breakfasts and snacks is essential reading for all food lovers. So is "Pot on the Fire." And "Serious Pig." And "Simple Cooking, his first book, which came out in 1987, and his most recent, "Mouth Wide Open" (2007. Another book, "Home Body," which was published in 1997, is about domestic topics, not food. That and "Simple Cooking" were solo efforts. The other books are all co-written with Matt Lewis Thorne. I hope you take a look at "Pot" and "Pig" and "Mouth" and enjoy them as much as I did...and do.

Juan Munoz, by Juan Munoz, Neal David Benezra

One of the leading artists of his generation, the Spanish sculptor Juan Muñoz (1953-2001) was known for his diverse and highly original body of work centering on the narrative possibilities of figures in environments. Juan Muñoz illustrates in full color approximately sixty works—including sculptures, drawings, and several major installations—which will be included in a major exhibition presented by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Art Institute of Chicago in October 2001.

Muñoz's early work focused on architectural objects that implied a transitory human presence. Then, defying the trend among progressive artists, he began to introduce figures into his work. Casting his figures in papier-mâché, resin, and eventually bronze, Muñoz limited their size and descriptive details to heighten their psychological impact. In the 1990s, Muñoz created his signature "conversation pieces," large ensembles of figures installed in indoor or outdoor settings. Calling upon a wide range of sources in literature, music, film, as well as painting and sculpture, Muñoz's work explores the nature of psychological interaction and engages the viewer on a variety of perceptual levels.

Juan Muñoz includes essays by Neal Benezra, art critic Michael Brenson, and Olga Viso, as well as an interview with the artist by Paul Shimmel. Also featuring highlights from a 2001 installation commissioned by London's Tate Modern, Juan Muñoz is the most comprehensive overview of this challenging and exciting artist's work.

An excellent document of an important artist's life
By Grady Harp
Sadly, Juan Munoz, the uniquely gifted artist from Spain, died far too early. His gifts as a sculptor and a draughtsman and a sage were most impressive. This catalogue which accompanies a travelling exhibition now in Los Angeles is in every way a fitting tribute to Munoz. Not only are the essays included insightful, they also heighten the excitement engendered by walking in and around and through the works of the clever and tender Munoz. No easy task this, as Munoz himself said 'much of the art is dependent on the interaction between the viewer and the pieces.' The caliber of photography is uniformly excellent with as much sensitivity to the various arrangements of Munoz' "Everyman" figurative sculptures as to the "Raincoat" drawings. When the catalogue was first published Munoz was very much alive and part of the exhibition at the Tate Modern in London. Now we have only his notes, some videos of his installations which include conversations with the artist, and this elegant catalogue to document a meaningful life and body of work. A Highly Recommended book on just about every level.

A lavish display of art
By Midwest Book Review
Juan Munoz is not only a catalog accompanying the first major survey of Munoz's work in this country, but the most comprehensive study of his work in print. Color illustrations of all the works in the exhibition accompany essays and an interview with the late artist; all of which reveal facets of his techniques and intentions. The lavish display of his art introduces readers to the range of his abilities.

Started out as intended, but became vague.
By J. Kang
It begins as an intereting history of Ninjutsu and discussion of Dr. Hatsumi's master. But after the first chapter, "Essence of Ninjutsu," it degenerates into diagrams depicting various fighting techniques and tools. Since, as it is stated in this book, the physical aspect was only a piece of Ninjutsu, and usually unnecessary, I'm not sure why so much was devoted to it.

Some of the techniques seem interesting, but in the case of Ninjutsu, the pictures are not always helpful. One of the photo descriptions states, "At the instant Dr. Hatsumi's intention to cut is felt, Fumio Manaka dives forward to avoid the grandmaster's shinku giri lateral sword slash."

Basically, this book is composed mostly of pictures and short discussions of fighting (and some stealth) techniques used by ninja. I expected something more whole and verbose from a "history and tradition" book.

Full of Nijutsu Information
By Jennifer Sneed
This is a superb book about ninjutsu. My husband, a 3rd degree black belt, said he's learned more in the first 14 pages of "History and Tradition" than in Stephen Hayes' books. Of course that should be obvious because Masaaki Hatsumi was Hayes' Sensei. The book briefly goes thru the history of the ninja including the other 33 Grandmasters (he's the 34th). Plus there is an in depth explanation of several ninja moves and tactics. The one thing that impressed my husband was that Hatsumi not only showed how to do moves but also when and where to do them. In my opinion this is a great study tool for anyone interested in ninjutsu. Highly reccommended!

The Ninjutsu (Ninpo) Bible - Very Informative
By Erric Budiono
Considered as the Ninpo Bible, this book gives a complete general information about Ninpo by the Grandmaster. It covers almost all of the things you need to know anout Ninpo in brief explanation such as the brief history, stances (kamae), striking (dakentaijutsu), body conditioning (junan taiso), Ninja weapons (ningu), female ninja (kunoichi), special training, etc. I'd say it is a must for Ninpo students and is excellent as an introduction for beginners, I really recommend it. (It is the first Ninpo book I bought)
Actually I'd also say that all of Hatsumi Sensei's books are worth buying, they will give you the real and true understanding about "What actually Ninpo is" through many different perspectives. My recommendation, try Stephen Hayes's books (esp. 5 series Ninja) for another awesome Ninpo author after Hatsumi Sensei. Other book/authors you might want to try are Andrew Adams's "Ninja: The Invisible Assasins" or Stephen Turnbull's "Ninja : The True Story of Japan's Secret Warrior Cult" (out of print) for the history of the old time Ninja. If you got a chance, get Robert Bussey's book Ninjutsu: Basic Skill and Techniques" which is out of print, you'll see some awesome techniques of Mr Bussey back while he was still in Ninpo.

From Booklist
Colonial Americans might have coined the revolutionary cry, "Don't tread on me," but the saying is just as applicable to the phenomenal array of carpets-as-artwork displayed here. Unlike most compilations, which tend to bury erudition beneath jargon and overly complicated language, the seven experts here--curators, scholars, and a librarian--present information and research in an open, communicative prose that even a dyed-in-the-wool minimalist would find difficult to dismiss. And unlike other tomes on aesthetics underfoot, it is easy to assimilate and appreciate the data, mixed with a panoply of color photographs and illustrations. The reader learns, among other things, about the differences in and identification of Oriental carpets and that Chinese-designed rugs are the only Eastern carpets not associated with religion. From the Back Cover
The seven authors of this lavishly illustrated book, each of them a recognized expert, lead us step by step through their respective fields, revealing the secrets of the 'trade', explaining production and restoration, exploring unresolved problems and their fascination. Unlike many books on the subject, Great Carpets of the World covers the subject throughout its historical and cultural spectrum as well as in great depth, from the remote origins of knotted fibers through the techniques of large-scale manufacture. Carpets from the great weaving centers of Turkey and Persia are examined at length, along with the custom of combining calligraphy with abstract and naturalistic design. Also discussed are Indian carpets of the Moghul Empire, the carpets of China, France, Great Britain, Spain, the Caucasus, and North Africa. A special bonus is the full and clear technical chapter, which presents and explains every aspect of carpet weaving - knotted pile, kilim and tapestry, and even needlework, concluding with a revue of the various means of conservation and presentation of old and antique carpets.

Please note the accurate title is Great Carpets of the World. This is the best carpet book in my large library
By Jane in Milwaukee
This review is of the 380-page English 1996 Vendome Press edition. When I put up reviews on books, I almost always upload pictures from the Images above. I won't here because, first, this book is over-sized and heavy and would be hard to maneuver onto my scanner. Second, there's no need: just imagine any photo of any rug whether in a museum, showroom, home, or in use by its makers and you'll find it here. The authors are a group of experts and historians who've dedicated their professional lives to the study of carpets.

While the subject is relegated to "only" Oriental carpets, it is as comprehensive a book as you'd want. The terms carpet and rug are use interchangeably and the book starts at the very beginning of recorded time, with the first textiles discovered to be included in "recorded." First came clothes, then came textiles for coverings which include carpets. Many of my oriental carpet books discuss the famous Pazyryk carpet in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg; it was discovered in a royal tomb in 1949 and is believed to be the oldest most intact high-quality carpet still in existence, dating to the end of the 5th century B.C.

From the detailed diagrams of individual knotting and weaving techniques to the glorious color photos that can cover both leaves of the open book, you are able to practically feel the carpets. There is an intense discussion of the origin and development of the carpet from every corner of the earth in terms of design and make. In photo after photo, the expert discussion leads to appreciation and understanding. This is just a beautiful book. Because it's huge, it can be pricey...but it's worth it.

Probably the best one in my large collection of oriental carpet books.

With this volume, Kathryn Lindskoog completes her three-volume edition of Dante's Divine Comedy. In this masterful retelling of the classic work, Lindskoog provides an edition that once again places the Christian's journey to Paradise as the primary purpose of the poem. With Inferno and Purgatory, Dante's journey has taken him through hell and purgatory, led by the poet Virgil. At the end of Purgatory, Beatrice appears to lead Dante home to Paradise. With grace and clarity, Paradise is now readable in a prose version that will inspire and enlighten the reader. Lindskoog provides notes that guide the reader through the realms of heaven, pointing out characters and their significance. This prose version makes clear that the journey for Dante, and thus for all readers, is a journey to joy.

Review
"A highly readable edition that adds a variety of new material, supplemented by references to Dorothy Sayers, C. S. Lewis, and many other Dante commentators." -- New York Review

"Kathryn Lindskoog's retelling of the _Comedy_ is an English rendering of poignant, poetic beauty.

"The greatest insight Lindskoog has, not only into Paradise but into the entire Comedy, is that is is a "journey of joy." The joy of the redeemed was Dante's great gift to his time, and Lindskoog has made it new for our own, which has desperate need of it." -- Living Church

"_Dante's Divine Comedy_ by Kathryn Lindskoog is a delight to read. This is definitely a reader-friendly retelling of Dante's Christian classic. The original Divine Comedy was written in terza rima, a closely rhymed form of Italian poetry. This version is written in clear and flowing modern English prose, which at times is suggestive of poetry. The reader is given easy-to-follow footnotes, providing historical background and interpretation that make the book readily understandable and enjoyable." -- Marjorie W. Avery, The C.S. Lewis Centenary Group

About the Author

This retelling of the Comedy superbly achieves its goal.
By David M. Baumann
At the time he was writing the Comedy nearly seven hundred years ago, Dante Alighieri intended to present to ordinary people the eternal Christian truths of damnation, redemption, and salvation in a work of marvelous splendor. Today, most people are unfamiliar with these truths as they are wrapped in the images Dante used, and the hundreds of contemporary references which enrich the work have been lost to common memory. Kathryn Lindskoog's retelling of the Comedy superbly achieves Dantes aims for our age. She has created an English rendering of poignant, poetic beauty, both inspiring and accessible; and her thorough and detailed knowledge of Dante's life, work, and times comes through footnotes which are expertly written without being intrusive or condescending. The footnotes, alone an impressive accomplishment, afford even a casual reader with sufficient background to the personalities and events of Dante's day which are vital for understanding his work. However, the greatest insight Lindskoog has, not only into Paradise but into the entire Comedy, is that it is a "journey to joy." Her use of these words as the subtitle shows that the Christian Way, so often caricatured as being restrictive, threatening, punishing, or opiative, is rather always to be seen as the Way to the radiant and invincible joy of eternal communion with God. This is the deep and abiding, guiding principle in the Comedy which Lindskoog recognized and never lost sight of. In Paradise, the joy of the redeemed comes through Lindskoog's rendering with almost painful incandescence. This was the great gift of Dante to his time, and Lindskoog has made it new for our own, which has desperate need of it.

Lucid editing provides a thrilling excursion
By A Customer
I'm sure I must have given up on my original copy of DIVINE COMEDY after "Inferno." But the lucid editing of this edition, with abundant footnotes, make clear and easy that which I could never decipher. With Virgil, Beatrice & Kathryn leading the way, the trip through Inferno, Purgatory & Paradise was a thrilling excursion.

Scientists and natives wrestle with our changing climate in the land where it has hit first
--and hardest

A traditional Eskimo whale-hunting party races to shore near Barrow, Alaska-their comrades trapped on a floe drifting out to sea-as ice that should be solid this time of year gives way. Elsewhere, a team of scientists transverses the tundra, sleeping in tents, surviving on frozen chocolate, and measuring the snow every ten kilometers in a quest to understand the effects of albedo, the snow's reflective ability to cool the earth beneath it.

Climate change isn't an abstraction in the far North. It is a reality that has already dramatically altered daily life, especially that of the native peoples who still live largely off the land and sea. Because nature shows her footprints so plainly here, the region is also a lure for scientists intent on comprehending the complexities of climate change. In this gripping account, Charles Wohlforth follows the two groups as they navigate a radically shifting landscape. The scientists attempt to decipher its smallest elements and to derive from them a set of abstract laws and models. The natives draw on uncannily accurate traditional knowledge, borne of long experience living close to the land. Even as they see the same things-a Native elder watches weather coming through too fast to predict; a climatologist notes an increased frequency of cyclonic systems-the two cultures struggle to reconcile their vastly different ways of comprehending the environment.

With grace, clarity, and a sense of adventure, Wohlforth--a lifelong Alaskan--illuminates both ways of seeing a world in flux, and in the process, helps us to navigate a way forward as climate change reaches us all.

From Publishers Weekly
"I love the winter. It's when I fly through the birch forest like a hawk." So begins Alaska-based journalist Wohlforth's beautifully written study of global warming's impact on Arctic weather patterns. He does a magnificent job of writing about two disparate culturesâ€"the Inupiaq Eskimos who live and hunt on the coast of the Arctic Ocean and Western scientists attempting to comprehend climate changeâ€"and demonstrating just how much they have in common. His goal is "to try to understand different ways of seeing the natural world," and he successfully moves between both groups as they acknowledge that significant change has already begun: "Average winter temperatures in Interior Alaska had risen 7 degrees F since the 1950s.... Alaska glaciers were shrinking, permanently frozen ground was melting, spring was earlier, and Arctic sea ice was thinner and less extensive than ever before measured. Winter was going to hell." The changes mean a lifestyle shift for the Inupiat, who depend for their livelihood on traditional methods of whaling that are being severely affected by the climate changes. Moving with ease from whaling boats to seminar rooms, Wohlforth brings excitement to the quest for information about global warming. Part adventure story, part science writing accessible to the general reader, this thoroughly engaging volume provides rich insight into ways of dealing with climate change. The issues Wohlforth raise go well beyond the Inupiaq Eskimos, he notes, and are certain to affect all of us in the coming years. Disregard the book's unfortunate titleâ€"it's worth reading.

From Booklist
Wohlforth traveled to Alaska in 2002 to track people who conduct climate research. In this surprisingly intimate presentation, in which he gives the life stories of most of the people he interviews, he accompanies one group of scientists on a Nome-to-Barrow transect to measure winter snowpack, and he talks to climate modelers, glaciologists, entomologists, and biologists at their various research stations on the Arctic coast or in the interior. Often itinerants from the lower 48, the scientists have a data-oriented outlook that contrasts with that of the Inupiat, the indigenous people of Alaska's North Slope. The contrast is nuanced and not succinctly definable, however. Although the Inupiat leaders were wary of him as an outsider, Wohlforth accompanied them on their tradition-keeping hunts for bowhead whales, a legal exception to the worldwide prohibition on whale hunting. En route, he transmits their experiences of climate warming either through observation of seascape or ancestral memory, which effectively convey the Inupiat's impression of the changes around them. Wohlforth's detailed, perceptive work will immediately engage readers interested in environmentalism. Gilbert Taylor

Review

“The ancient heart of arctic Alaska beats loudly in The Whale and the Supercomputer. Charles Wohlforth writes passionate advocacy in brilliant prose, very much in the tradition of Peter Matthiessen and Barry Lopez, that is, inimitably. The Inupiaq Eskimo's vigilant concerns, ideas, know-how--side by side with modern science's approach to the profound effects of climate change--are brought to readers with unalloyed power to disturb and enchant in equal measure. Mr. Wohlforth is an indispensable environmental journalist.” ―Howard Norman, author of The Bird Artist and My Famous Evening

“Charles Wohlforth has sent us a fascinating dispatch from the front lines of global warming. With this satisfying blend of adventure and philosophy, he paints a rich and often surprising picture of life at the edge of the world. And, by showing us two cultures struggling to grasp the epic changes upon them, he tackles fundamental questions about the nature of knowledge itself, and the purpose of seeking it.” ―Barbara Freese, author of Coal

What do you know?
By OCreader
We know why this book was honored with the 2005 Los Angeles Times Book Award for science/technical writing. Wohlforth cheerfully tackles the deep fog of climate science (even some of the career scientists he interviews seem hopelessly befuddled by the complexity of it). But he approaches it both as a journalist who makes his living by storytelling, and as a father used to gently encouraging his four bright, curious children to understand their world. He can distill a century of mind-numbing bench science into a metaphor that his 10-year old can understand and that readers of all ages will appreciate.

To get the story he drops into whaling expeditions and arctic research explorations with equal aplomb by chipping in and becoming one of the team. (The comparison is not unlike the cinematographers who capture on film the drama of a Mt. Everest ascent: the only way to get the picture is to strap on the gear and make the climb themselves, right alongside the adventurers they're filming.)

Getting and telling the story is what Wohlforth knows how to do. In his book, he captivates us by telling us what his "characters" know how to do. From the fox who knows how to skitter across a thin sheet of newly-forming ice without falling through, to the native who knows how to take compass readings by studying the shadows on snow drifts, to our generation's academic elites who know how to wrap their minds around the infinitely complex equations that underlie the mysteries of climate change. In the end, it's really not so mysterious: the signs of climate change are obvious and all around us.

Read this book and prepare to be moved and enlightened, just as you will be charmed by the people whose lives, livelihoods, and ways of knowing are as diverse as the environment itself.

Global warming given a personal perspective
By Lee Herman
This book tells many stories centered on the theme of climate change as seen in Northern Alaska. The Iñupiat people have lived around what is today Barrow, Alaska for over a thousand years. As with many indigenous peoples, they have a keen awareness of their natural surroundings. For the Iñupiat, knowledge of weather, ice and whale behavior is a matter of life and death, both moment to moment in a climate so harsh the cold can kill quickly and in the larger life of their villages, where successful whale hunts are needed to feed the people.

Barrow has also been the site of scientific Arctic climate studies since the 1800s. A parallel culture of scientists has developed in the several research stations in the area. For many years, the Iñupiat and scientific communities have coexisted in varying states of tension. Both recognize strengths in the other but their ways of approaching life and understanding the world are very different and often not possible to reconcile. While the scientists have frequently consulted with and tried to learn from the Iñupiat, the scientists have typically found this a frustrating exercise and the Iñupiat have had enough bad experiences with researchers on short projects not really understanding the people or the place that they do not easily trust outsiders.

Charles Wohlforth has lived in Alaska and did a remarkable job of coaxing stories out of the Iñupiat. They are storytellers - telling stories has long been deeply ingrained in their culture and way of life. We hear some of their stories as well as those of the scientists. Perhaps most remarkably, we meet a scientist who returned to Alaska to adopt the Iñupiat way of life as a whaling captain instead of pursuing his scientific career and Iñupiat who have made their way as scientists even as they live next to the people they grew up with.

But most important, while we see the effects of global warming and climate change as seen by the scientists doing research and the Iñupiat whalers trying to cope with the impact of bad ice and warmer weather on all aspects of whaling, the author reminds us that these local effects are just a snapshot in one place of changes that will affect us all. Reading this book compels an appreciation for the depth and breadth of knowledge of an indigenous people surviving the changes in the modern world while preserving their native ways and traditions.

A MUST read !
By B. Moose Peterson
In my twenty+ years of working with enviromental issues and the hundreds and hundreds of books I've read on those topics, none have been as good a read as The Whale and the Supercomputer!
There is a clear need, no matter the science, of relating the science to the real world. This book does of great job of doing that on a topic that is so important to our world today and for our kids of tomorrow.
Be entertained as you learn, understand a world so few are fortunate enough to explore. Read this book!
