Traveling in covered wagons and by train, young Martha Jane Smith (affectionately called Mattie) and her family left Texas in the early 1900s to homestead on the wind-swept High Plains of Eastern New Mexico. Determination was ignited early in Mattie's life-beginning with a rattlesnake bite that meant almost certain death in those days. Not for Mattie! When Mattie was eleven, her mother died. When Mattie was 22, her husband died from the Spanish Flu, leaving her with three young daughters to rear alone. A second marriage produced three sons; the first died one day before his first birthday. Mattie's husband died when the oldest surviving son was only nine. Heartbroken, the young widow refused to give in to futility or despair. Her dire situation again fanned the fire of fierce determination. Though others during the Great Depression lost their homes, Mattie-even as a widow-found a way to buy a house. Whereas others suffered long periods of unemployment, she 'landed' a job. While many went hungry all across the United States, she found ways to feed her family as well as others. Many widows depended on relatives during this desperate time, but Mattie took care of her children and helped other families. Before the Depression was over, Mattie established a business. This was before women were accepted in the business world. Though she had no roadmap to guide her, Mattie never considered quitting or turning back. Her business thrived for more than four decades. Mattie's remarkable life provides a role model as relevant today as it was decades ago. Remembering Mattie: A Pioneer Woman's Legacy of Grit, Gumption, and Grace is a treasure trove of true stories. Memorable pictures of people and places from the past and historic legal documents and papers (including long-ago newspaper clippings and love letters) add substance and interest to the book. Relevant information about what was going on in the world at the time provides a meaningful backdrop for Mattie's life story.

Review
''The preface begins: 'The most influential lives are not always the best-known lives.' And the author proceeds to tell the story of a homesteading family eking out a living in eastern New Mexico. The main character of this historical/genealogical narrative is the author's grandmother. Born in 1896 Martha 'Mattie' Jane Smith endured the life of a pioneer woman surviving a rattlesnake bite as a youngster, losing her mother at age 11, her young husband died in the flu epidemic in 1918, and as a 22-year-old widow, she reared three young daughters. A second marriage ensued, a son died, then her second husband died. 'Through it all, this woman survived; she was a trailblazer for others suffering relentless difficulties,' writes the author. The book is filled with wondrous photographs from a by-gone era--old buildings, dust storms on the plains, horse drawn wagons, old cars. Samples of early handwriting really make this book a collection of memorable snippets. The overall portrait, however, may be more interesting for the many living descendants of Mattie. Yet the book truly is a keepsake and an inspiration for others who had tough, enduring pioneer ancestors.'' ----Cindy Bellinger, ''Book Chat,'' Enchantment

A MUST READ
By L. Johnson
This captivating book is absolutely a 5 STAR READ. This journey through the life of a pioneer woman, Mattie Kinney, goes far beyond this one individual. It is quite apparent that this was a remarkable woman whose virtues, philosophy and sense of humor left a lasting impression on all who met her. Intertwined is the story of countless other women and their families and how their courage, struggles, hardships, conquests and accomplishments impacted our country's development. The historical, political and natural events related contribute to the reader's broad knowledge of how the deeply rutted roads of progress were influenced by the desire of the United States to expand its influence west, the Homestead Act, the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. This historical manuscript is a must read for all individuals seeking to understand the bedrock of our country and its character. L. Johnson

great read for mother and daughter
By Christi Whittredge
Remembering Mattie is a marvelous account of a great pioneer woman. The chapter called "I Will Keep My Girls" is especially gripping; it tells of 22-year-old Mattie's determination to keep her three young daughters after her husband dies in the Great Flu epidemic in 1918. This chapter and all the others bring history to life and make it more personal. In addition to very interesting reading, the pictures are powerful-- pictures from the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, old family pictures, homestead documents of Mattie's family in the early 1900s, excerpts from love letters, recipes in Mattie's handwriting, etc. I bought a copy for myself and another for my daughter. I love having a book about a strong woman to share with her.

What a Wonderful Legacy!
By Tonette Holle
Interesting and inspirational, this book was obviously written by someone who knew Mattie well. With warmth and clarity, the author was able to weave together a tremendous amount of information about Mattie's fascinating life story. Three words in the subtitle--grit, gumption, and grace--give a great description of Mattie's courage, tenacity, and love and respect for people. What a remarkable role model Mattie provides for everyone even today!
Remembering Mattie is a treasure chest of ideas for people working on their own family history. Perhaps most important of all, Mattie's life--lived fully and beautifully--shows how to build one's own legacy.
