Fresh, Colorful, and Comfortable

The cover of this wonderful book on the interior design work of Katie Ridder is what inspired me to click and look, after which I clicked and bought. What I saw on the cover is what I wanted to see more of in the book, and it's all there! Ridder's rooms are full of a most surprising use of color and pattern that piques the interest, and makes one want to enter and make oneself at home. Barring this, looking at and reading the rest of the book are good ideas! In addition to the wonderful experience of these rooms, the entire package pleases. The book itself is covered in a nice design (for those who like to display books as part of their own decorations); there are colorful drawn designs and vignettes scattered throughout the book; and there are individual chapters on details, lighting, upholstery, embroidery, tile, and wallpaper. And let me mention one thing that you will not find in the book--shelves of ratty-looking books. Here's a design tip from me: if you are going to spend money on lots of interesting books, obtain clear covers for the books' dust jackets. Your shelves will look fresh and neat, and your books will be protected from looking dirty and shredded, especially if you move a lot. This book is good, good, good!

Beautiful Rooms

I just finished reading 'Room's tonight. I really enjoyed this book and the information provided about Katie Ridder's design process. I was expecting a book written by the designer on her philosophy of design so I was a little surprised at the text being written from a third person, however, the information provided is excellent and it helped to see how decisions were made in the design process. I found it to be insightful. I've become very interested in design over the past several months and books like this fuel my desire for learning. It certainly helps that all of the rooms are beautiful and well done indeed.

This is such an inspirational book so many fresh ideas and different ways to use color. I buy many of these books and look at them a few times this is one I keep picking up over and over-a real delight.

The purpose of In Defense of the Brain is clearly defined by the editors in their preface: "We asked the contributors to provide the reader a current understanding, at the molecular level, of the strategies used by the host to defend the brain." There is clearly a need for a book that summarizes the many recent advances in knowledge of the pathogenesis of infections of the central nervous system. The editors, however, were only partially successful in achieving their objective.

Unfortunately, for the infections in which understanding of immunopathogenesis is limited, the editors gave the chapter authors the option of stressing new concepts of treatment and prevention. This option allowed the editors to include discussions of toxoplasmosis, cystocercosis, cryptococcal meningitis, rabies, and prion diseases, but these provide little or no information about host defenses at the molecular level. By including such topics, the editors created a more complete "mini-textbook" on infections of the central nervous system at the expense of obscuring their primary objective. These chapters could have been omitted, because the information included in them is available in any recent infectious-disease textbook.

As in many multiauthored books, repetition is a problem: the anatomy of the blood-brain barrier is discussed in chapters 1, 2, and 6; the cytokines released during infections of the central nervous system are described in chapters 4, 5, and 7. The first eight chapters also do not seem to be in the most appropriate sequence. Chapters 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8 discuss the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis. Interpolated between chapters 2 and 6 are chapters on microglia, defenses against viral and parasitic infections, and glia-mediated neurotoxicity. The reader interested in bacterial meningitis would do well to read the chapters in the sequence 1, 6, 7, 8, 2, 3, and 5.

The initial eight chapters on bacterial meningitis and on the role of microglia in defending the brain clearly succeed in providing the reader with an up-to-date review of the strategies used by the host to defend the brain against infection. Each of the remaining 12 chapters is devoted to a specific pathogen. Unfortunately, because so little is known about pathogenesis at the molecular level for some of the pathogens discussed in the book, almost half the chapters cannot meet the primary objective of the editors. In the remainder, there is considerable repetition of the earlier descriptions of cytokines and cellular elements involved in host defenses.

Given the high quality of the writing overall, it is unfortunate that the index is so unhelpful. Important topics missing from the index include outer membrane protein, pili, fimbria, adhesins, and bacterial polysaccharide capsules. Some authors cited in the text are indexed, but others are not, without any obvious reason. Thus, the index fails to function either as a topical index or as an authors' index.

This book will be of interest to specialists, whether in infectious diseases, microbiology, or neurology. A major attraction for such readers will be the excellent bibliographies. All the articles are up to date through early 1996. The book is much too detailed and too expensive for the general medical reader.

Delightful book on all things olive

_Olives_ by Mort Rosenblum is a well-written, witty, and engaging book on all things olive, thorough in its coverage. Rosenblum became an olive aficionado after acquiring five acres of land in the Provence region of France, site of an abandoned farmhouse and two hundred half-dead and heavily overgrown century-plus olive trees, long neglected. From that point on he became not only committed to bringing his trees back to life but on becoming an expert on olives in general, traveling throughout France, Israel, Palestine, Spain, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Greece, the former Yugoslavia, California, and Mexico to speak to olive growers, those who press olives for their oil, government regulators, those involved in marketing table olives and olive oil, chefs, and nutritional experts. Though not a cookbook, _Olives_ even includes cooking, buying, and storage tips as well as recipes for such fare as eliopitta (a Cypriot olive bread) and imam bayaldi (the name meaning "the imam fainted," supposedly reference to a long-ago reaction to this eggplant and olive oil dish).

The origins of the domestication of _Olea europaea_ are lost in the mists of prehistory. The olive, a close relation to the lilac and jasmine, was maintained in groves in Asia Minor as early as 6000 B.C. Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans spread olives to Sicily, the Italian mainland, France, Spain, and North Africa. Spanish missionaries in the 1500s brought the olive to California and Mexico. Today there are 800 million olive trees in the world. Though found on six continents, 90% of them are found in the Mediterranean (Spain has the most).

Olives have long been an important fixture in Mediterranean history and religion. Golden carvings of olives decorated ancient Egyptian tombs. Greeks used so much olive oil to lubricate their athletes that they invented a curved blade, the strigil, to scrape it off. Saul, the first king of Israel, was crowned by rubbing oil into his forehead. In Hebrew, the root word for "messiah" comes from "unguent," meaning that the messiah when he arrives will be slathered in oil. The fuel referred to in the miracle of Hanukkah was olive oil. The Old and New Testaments refer to olive oil 140 times and the olive tree 100 times. The Romans had a separate stock market and merchant marine dedicated just to oil.

Rosenblum vividly showed that olive oil is a nuanced as wine. There are seven hundred cultivated varieties, or cultivars, with some grown for pressing, others for eating, ranging from cailletiers (favored in salade nicoise) to malissi (the standard tree of the West Bank) to the hardy, wilder Moroccan picholine to the famous Greek Kalamata. Oils vary a lot in taste, from syrupy yellow oils of southern Italy to thin green Tuscan oils with a peppery after bite to the spicy and light oil of the Siurana region of Spain. Acidity and taste vary due to local cultivators, the weather that year, the presence or absence of pests, when the olives are harvested, and how long they sit around before pressing (as fermentation drives up acidity).

There are regional differences in harvesting olives. In Israel, Palestine, and France, they "milk" trees, the pickers using their fingers and dropping olives into a basket or a net under the tree. "Whackers" - prevalent in Spain, Italy, and Greece - use sticks to hit the branches to dislodge olives, faster and not requiring ladders, but tougher on the trees.

The actual process of pressing olives is extremely well-covered, Rosenblum vividly describing the one favored in most olive-growing countries, the modern continuous system (which uses linked centrifuges to grind up pulp), often highly automated, and the traditional method of using a tower press, which is a very interesting device (though labor-intensive and on the decline outside of niche markets). There are considerable debates in the industry over exact methods, particularly on the use of water and its temperature.

Olives are big business; an industry producing about $10 billion a year as the world consumes nearly 2 million metric tons of olive oil each year. In some areas consumption is quite high; the average per capita consumption annually in Greece is five gallons of oil. Though Spain produces 37% of the world's oil compared to Italy's 19 % and Greece's 17%, it only has a 16% share of the American market (compared to Italy's 70% and Greece's 3%). Ten brands dominate the American domesticate market; most labels are small, sold only regionally or instead growers sell their olives to Italy to produced blended oils for export as a "Product of Italy" despite being grown perhaps in Tunisia, Greece, or Turkey. Rosenblum investigated the corruption that existed in the industry, from waning Mafia influence in Italy to adulterating olive oil with seed oil to cheating in some areas to gain EU agricultural subsidies.

Sales in olive oil have grown a great deal, particularly in the United States, thanks to a growing consensus on its healthfulness. Monounsaturated, olive oil drives out bad cholesterol without reducing the good. Rich in antioxidants, it has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The author provided some valuable education to the consumer about oils. Extra-virgin for instance means that the amount of free fatty acids - mostly oleic acid - is below 1 percent, with the organoleptic properties (aroma, taste, and body) rating high. Virgin oil, rarely found for sale, has up to 2 percent acidity. Both are produced by "first-press" or "cold-press" methods. Plain olive oil, (or "pure"), is refined inferior oil used mainly for frying, treated with steam and chemicals and mixed with some better oil for a little flavor and aroma. Pomace oil comes from the first-press leavings, refined to bring it below the 3.5 percent acidity level that designates lamp oil, though often pomace is instead used to make soap (the oil for soap may have 40% acidity). "Lite" oil has the same number of calories (125 per tablespoon), simply being a refined olive oil with less extra virgin added, a clearer color, cheaper to make, and inferior.

Educational and mostly entertaining

The author of this book clearly loves olives. Like the author himself, I have come by my interest in them them rather late in life. This book has caught me up nicely in understanding about olives, their cultivation, and their cultural place in all the regions around the Mediterranean.

The fifth star is missing in my rating because many chapters left me with a vaguely depressed feeling about how traditional olive culture is fading under pressure from modern economic forces and the pervasive cheating that goes on in European Union agricultural subsidies. This sensation may have been another testament to the author's writing skill, but I found it unpleasant and it distracted from my enjoyment of the book. Nonetheless, I can recommend the book to anybody with an interest in olives and how things work behind the grocery store shelves.

In 1929 Allan Moses, a fisherman from Grand Manan, parleyed an ornithological "find" into a bird preservation area, leading the way for the development of several bird sanctuaries on Canada's eastern coast. Without his work, the common eider population would now be decimated and many of the shorebirds which nest in the Bay of Fundy would be endangered, if not extinct.

But the discovery of an albatross also gave a strange twist to Moses' career, bringing his interests to the attention of several museums, including the Cleveland Museum and the American Museum of Natural History, which later sponsored his ornithological expeditions to the South Atlantic and West Africa.

A former journalist and director of Canadian History for the New Brunswick Museum, L.K. Ingersoll was a founding member of the Grand Manan Museum and the editor of the Grand Manan Historian.

About the Author
JOANN FORD WATSON is the H. R. Gill Family Professor of Theology at Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, Ohio. She received her B.A. from DePauw University, her M.Div.from Princeton Theological Seminary, and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, USA, and has worked in Calcutta with Mother Theresa's order, the Missionaries of Charity. Her previous volumes are Selected Spiritual Writings of Anne Dutton, Volume I: Letters (2003), Volume II: Discourses, Poetry, and Hymns (2004), and Volume III: Autobiography. She is interested in women's history, contemporary theology, and spirituality.

Selected Spiritual Writings of Anne Dutton: Eighteenth-Century, British-Baptist, Woman Theologian by Anne Dutton, compiled and edited by Joann Ford Watson (Mercer) Women theologians in the eighteenth century were a rarity. Were there no other reason, this alone would make the literary legacy of the Baptist Anne (Williams) Dutton (1692-1765) significant.
In 1731, Anne and her minister husband, Benjamin Dutton, settled in Great Gransden, Huntingdonshire. After Benjamin's death, Anne became known on both sides of the Atlantic primarily through her extensive writings, including tracts, treatises, poems, hymns, and letters.
Among her many correspondents were Howel Harris, Selina Hastings, William Seward, Phillip Doddridge, John Wesley, and George Whitefield. Harris believed God had entrusted her "with a Talent of writing for Him." Whitefield, who helped promote and publish Anne's writings, commented upon meeting her that "her conversation is as weighty as her letters?'
She wrestled with the question of whether it was "biblical" for a woman to be a writer of theological matters. About the Author
Tom Prisciantelli spent many years driving and researching the American Southwest and documenting those geologic and archaeological facts he found most interesting and accessible via hiking trails. His first exposure to geology was in the mid-1960s while attending college in New Mexico where he graduated. After a two-year stint in the Army, he moved back and forth between the East Coast and Southwest. Having spent most of his working life in the computer field, he started his own contracting business, eventually leaving it in order to actualize his dream--to travel and learn about the land. This book is a result of that dream and the desire to share it.

What does our sophisticated, technically advanced society have to learn from a venerable African goddess? That is the question Dr. Diedre Badejo set out to answer a decade ago, armed only with a tape recorder, a working knowledge of Yoruba language, literature, and culture, and a mental "image" of the African Motherland molded as much by her great grandmother's character as by her own experience of the Black Power and Black Studies movements of the '60s and '70s. The answers the author found as she immersed herself in the ritual orature, sacred songs, and festival drama of the Yoruba goddess, Osun Seegesi, at the diety's principal shrine in the city of Osogbo, Nigeria, are shared with the world in this detailed documentary/analysis that presents a startling view of human relationships that is powerful in its practicality and revolutionary in its civility. What Osun (pronounced "Oh-Shoon") offers to a civilization standing "at the crossroads" and poised on the "abyss of transition," says the author, is nothing less than "an African feminist theory that challenges the hegemony of the Western social order" with a holistic sociocultural vision that recognizes and affirms the reciprocal role of women and men in building and sustaining a truly civil society.

great highlight on a Yoruba goddess

In this book, Diedre Badejo presents a thorough and engaging overview of Òsun, the Yoruba goddess of wealth, power, and femininity. Chapters include a translation of the chants about Òsun; an overview of Yoruba cosmology and Òsun's role in it; a description of the Òsun festival; and a discussion of gender, power, and African feminist theory. Òsun is a particularly fascinating goddess and exemplar of feminine power in the Yoruba religion: in the Yoruba cosmological myth, sixteen male gods left out Òsun when they were creating the world, but she surreptitiously foiled their plans. Only when they apologized and made amends could they begin their work, together (73). I also liked seeing the translations of the chants, particularly the line that calls Òsun the goddess who recognizes that "people are more important than wealth" (23).

If you have a particular interest in Yoruba religion or Òsun, this is a solid treatment that will provide good material. But if you are looking for an introduction to Yoruba religion in general, I would suggest Jacob Olúpònà, "City of 201 Gods" City of 201 Gods: Ilé-Ifè in Time, Space, and the Imagination. The methodology in Olúpònà is more advanced, and the writing is more dense, but what you get for that is a stronger covering of religious studies and gender issues in particular.
