Taken from Chapter 16: P is for plantation Plantations were large farms where one main crop was grown to be sold for money. There were cotton, tobacco, and rice plantations. They were owned by wealthy masters, but slaves did most of the work. Slaves were people who were forced to work without pay.

Cute & informative

This is a great book. It goes throught the alphabet & expands on an aspect of colonial times. Each page includes artwork, illustrations, or diagrams to expound on life. This book is cleverly written and very handy. I like how chalked full of information it is. A great book for 4-8 year olds.

Learn about the daily life of Colonial Americans

Using an ABC book format, we learn of various aspects of colonial life in America: dress, trades, daily living and even games that children played. Just enough text to keep the attention span of kids aged 6 and under. Illustrations are drawings and photographs. A nice addition to learning the history of our United States of America. The content focuses mainly on daily living such as who does what type of job and how people live, such as what their kitchens were like, how they cooked, and about how they dealt with the hazards of chimney and roof fires. Slavery is touched on very briefly and it is implied that all Colonials owned slaves.
