On the ghastly battlefields of the First World War, Jimmie Johnston drove teams or pack horses carrying ammunition and hauling guns to the front lines. One night, Johnston was hauling guns back from the front line. Suddenly, in the darkness and pouring rain, he, his team, the wagon, and the guns pitched into an old trench. After disentangling the horses from their harness, Johnston found a trenching tool, dug away the side of the trench, and led the horses out of what had become a sea of mud. Then he harnessed them again, took them back to camp, cleaned them up, and returned to the trench to find the wagon blown to bits by German fire.
Jimmie Johnston, the farm boy, endured nearly three years under constant artillery fire. Two decades after the war ended, he wrote this memoir of his wartime experiences on a trip back to Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. In Riding into War, Johnston marvels at how jokes and pranks and the funny side of even the most terrible events have stuck in his mind. Yet, even in the face of horror and suffering, his sense of humour rarely deserted him. The scenes he relates destroyed many men's sanity, but Johnston's ability to laugh and the practical need to care for his horses no doubt contributed to his recovery. After the war, he says, "my nerves were not too good, and I remember a lot of nights I would get up when no one else was around and have to go for a long walk." But, he concludes, "After some time, this seemed to wear off and soon back to a new life again."

Review
"Riding into War is the best memoir now in print relating to logistics. It explores the forgotten heroics of feeding and arming the Canadian Corps during the First World War." — Tim Cook, Canadian War Museum (2013-01-11)
From the Inside Flap
"I believe my saddle horse knew more than I did . . . He took care of me."
The popular image of the Great War is of the trenches, but Jimmie Johnston experienced the triumph of Vimy and the hell of Passchendaele from a saddle. A horse driver in the transport section of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, he hauled machine guns and ammunition to the front lines through shellfire, darkness, driving rain, and suffocating mud.

Great book!
By K Scheffler
Riding Into War is a memoir written in 1964 after the author had travelled to France to revisit its old battlefields. It was written with the intention of leaving a record for future members of his family, but fortunately, they have since felt it important enough to make this memoir available to a wider audience.
The author first enlisted with the 145th Battalion, CEF, but this unit was broken up for drafts for existing frontline units. So just a few weeks prior to Vimy, the author found himself in France a member of the 26th Battalion. However, he soon volunteered for machine gun training and was therefore re-assigned to the 14th Canadian Machine Gun Company. But instead of manning a machine gun, he was detailed to transport duty, a task that he would continue to perform until war's end.
Riding Into War therefore provides us with an account of the war from the perspective of one of the tens of thousands of men who functioned primarily behind the lines, but whose duties were still essential and also quite dangerous.

A VETERAN'S UNVARNISHED VIEW OF WAR
By KOMET
James Robert Johnston, a First World War veteran from New Brunswick, Canada, made a trip during the summer of 1964 to the part of the Western Front where he had seen extensive service as a horse driver in a transport unit of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps in 1917 and 1918. It was his first trip back to Europe in almost 50 years. Johnston was so deeply affected by the experience that he resolved to put down on paper his memories of his wartime service.
This book is full of photos and maps which allow the reader to follow the narrative without any difficulty. The writing style is clear and concise. Any reader will quickly find him/herself a part of Johnston's story from the time he left the family farm to join the army in April 1916 (aged 18) to the time he returned to Canada in June 1919. In his words, "... the one thing that surprised me was in the difference of the younger folks. They seemed to have aged so much more than the older people. I believe I came home as well physically as when I went away, but my nerves were not too good and I remember a lot of nights I would get up and when no one else was around have to go for a long walk. After some time this seemed to wear off and soon I was back to a new life again."
