Simple Pleasures Captured By a Master Observer

A picture book of the wiles, charms and mysterious nuances of women that cause men to fall in love at first sight. Some variations in dimensions would improve and take this art form into the abstract. It would not be so simple a pleasure then would it now? I thoroughly enjoy the colors, poses and simplicity of beauty in these instinctive drawings. They transport me back to easter, elementary school birthday parties and adolescent male contemplations of the female mystique. Like my first crush on that young school teacher in the fifth grade!

The journal Shi'r (1957-70) was a professional avant-garde monthly journal founded in Beirut by Yusuf al-Khal with a group of young poets and was dedicated to poetry and poetic studies. The journal supported poetic experimentation and became a centre of various types of cultural practice. In the course of time, the activities of the group that were linked to the journal were consolidated in what was called 'the Shi'r movement'. This book examines the ongoing debates about Shi'r which continued after its closure in 1970, and the growing tendency among Arab critics, intellectuals and ideologists to associate literary movements that pursued innovation and change, with the movement of modernity in the Arab World. Most of the writers who investigate and evaluate the practices and contributions of Shi'r define the prose poem as central to Shi'r's aspiration for cultural change, yet Arab critics who explore the works of the Shi'r group tend to treat the work of each writer as an individual accomplishment. Consequently, the journal was seen merely as a meeting venue and a medium for conducting individual experiments and pursuing personal careers. The group was also perceived as an insular gathering dominated by a competitive spirit, and by sectarian and political connections. Basing its analysis on the major writings about Shi'r and the prose poem in Arabic and English, the book seeks to demonstrate that these conventional methods of viewing the Shi'r project still breed misconceptions about the group and their writings and still affect adversely the studies of the Arabic prose poem. Taking as its basis recent groundbreaking writings on modern cultural and literary studies in general, and on studies of the prose poem in particular, the book will attempt to search for a new perspective to redefine the place of Shi'r and the prose poem within the battleground of Arabic modern poetry. About the author Dr Otared Haidar is a lecturer in Arabic studies at the Oriental Institute of the University of Oxford.

This captivating book is absolutely a 5 STAR READ. This journey through the life of a pioneer woman, Mattie Kinney, goes far beyond this one individual. It is quite apparent that this was a remarkable woman whose virtues, philosophy and sense of humor left a lasting impression on all who met her. Intertwined is the story of countless other women and their families and how their courage, struggles, hardships, conquests and accomplishments impacted our country's development. The historical, political and natural events related contribute to the reader's broad knowledge of how the deeply rutted roads of progress were influenced by the desire of the United States to expand its influence west, the Homestead Act, the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. This historical manuscript is a must read for all individuals seeking to understand the bedrock of our country and its character. L. Johnson

great read for mother and daughter

Remembering Mattie is a marvelous account of a great pioneer woman. The chapter called "I Will Keep My Girls" is especially gripping; it tells of 22-year-old Mattie's determination to keep her three young daughters after her husband dies in the Great Flu epidemic in 1918. This chapter and all the others bring history to life and make it more personal. In addition to very interesting reading, the pictures are powerful-- pictures from the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, old family pictures, homestead documents of Mattie's family in the early 1900s, excerpts from love letters, recipes in Mattie's handwriting, etc. I bought a copy for myself and another for my daughter. I love having a book about a strong woman to share with her.

What a Wonderful Legacy!

Interesting and inspirational, this book was obviously written by someone who knew Mattie well. With warmth and clarity, the author was able to weave together a tremendous amount of information about Mattie's fascinating life story. Three words in the subtitle--grit, gumption, and grace--give a great description of Mattie's courage, tenacity, and love and respect for people. What a remarkable role model Mattie provides for everyone even today!

Remembering Mattie is a treasure chest of ideas for people working on their own family history. Perhaps most important of all, Mattie's life--lived fully and beautifully--shows how to build one's own legacy.

They gather to tell tales from ancient times and stories about their villages past and present. In this way, they pass on their culture from generation to generation.

Life in Nigeria

The photographs were colorful and the text full of useful information but how can the author talk about city life without including photographs of hotels, highways, restaurants, cafes and all the trimmings of modern city life. I was surprised, especially since this book was printed in the year 2000. Also in the section about "Variety of Homes" why did the author fail to have pictures of the grand homes in Ikoyi and Victoria Island, homes that are a great testimony to Nigerian architecture? I am tired of people coming up to me and asking me what life is like in Nigeria and whether I live in a hut? It is no wonder they have this view when books like this continue to only depict the poor, deprived lifestyle of Africa (village life) failing to take note of the leaps and bounds we have made towards modernity.

Since the last Ice Age, the only safe route into Canada's interior during the winter started at the Bay of Fundy and followed the main rivers north to the St. Lawrence River through what is now New Brunswick. Aboriginal people used this route as a major highway in all seasons and the great imperial powers followed their lead.

The Grand Communications Route, as it was then called, was the only conduit for people, information and goods passing back and forth between the interior settlements and the wider world and became the backbone of empire for both England and France in their centuries of warfare over this territory. It was Joseph Robineau de Villebon, a commandant in Acadie, who first made strategic use of the route in time of war because he understood its importance in the struggle for North America. A strategic link between the Atlantic colonies and Quebec, the French made extensive use of the route to communicate and move troops between the northern settlements and Fort Beauséjour, Louisbourg, and Port-Royal. The British put great effort into maintaining and fortifying the route, building major coastal forts at Saint John to guard its entrance and erecting garrisons and blockhouses all along the way to the St Lawrence, first as a defence against the French and then to ward off the Americans.

The route also played a key role in the American Revolution as well as the Aroostook War of 1839 that saw bodies of troops lining each side of the border extending from St. Andrews (NB) and Calais (ME) to Madawaska. In 1842, the Grand Communications Route and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty determined the location of the Canada—US border.

It is still in use today: the Trans-Canada Highway and Route 7 follow its path. As well as telling the story of the Grand Communications Route from the earliest human habitation of the area, The Road to Canada describes the historic sites, forts, blockhouses and other historic remains that can still be visited today, including Martello Tower (Saint John), the Fort Hughes blockhouse (Oromocto), the Fort Fairfield blockhouse (Fort Fairfield, ME), Le Fortin du Petit-Sault (Edmundston), the Fort Kent blockhouse (Fort Kent, ME) and Fort Ingall (Cabano, QC).

The Trans-Canada Highway winds along the Saint John and Madawaska rivers through New Brunswick and Quebec to the St. Lawrence River. It follows one of the oldest and strategically most important routes in North American history: the Grand Communications Route. For millennia, the Saint John River system had been a major artery in the vast system of lakes, rivers, and portages linking aboriginal communities. During the French and British colonial periods, and until the advent of rail travel in the 1870s, it remained the backbone of an overland route between the Atlantic Ocean and the interior of the continent.
